I'm not sure if it's still recruiting, but a laser manufacturer near me is looking for patients for a 4-month clinical trial. My understanding is that you go in 5 days a week and get a 15-minute laser treatment on 1 side of your face. On the other side you apply an OTC face cream that they supply. The study lasts 4 months.
Based on the 5 day/week 4-month schedule, it seems like it must be a device they are planning to market for home use. They said it's already passed its safety studies--this is an efficacy study.
The reasons I am considering doing it is:
a. You get $25 a visit (I think they might have upped the compensation since then)
b. I get to experience the benefits of a laser procedure--on 1 side of my face, anyway
c. I'm a medical writer and I write about clinical studies so it would be interesting to participate in one
d. The idea of getting paid for a beauty treatment is a nice one
The cons are:
a. You have to give up your regular skincare for the study duration
b. They told me a bit about the OTC cream they use, and I googled it and it has silicones, which make me break out
c. The time commitment...Each visit is only 15 minutes, and it's just 10 minutes or so away, but doing that almost every day for 4 months could make life harder
I really don't have safety concerns as they are a reputable company and they've passed their initial safety studies.
What do you think? I'm so on the fence but I need to decide so I can call them tomorrow. |

So let's say that the laser works WAY better than the cream, and only 50% of you looks awesome. Will it cost a lot to make the other 50% look good? I would only consider it only if you get that 2nd 50% at a dramatic discount.
What if the technicians burn you in some manner? Are your expenses covered?
Exactly what is this laser supposed to do?
What is the REAL downtime? (it sounds minimal if you go in every day)
I'm not saying you shouldn't do it...I'm just laying out the first couple of things that popped into my mind. |

Are you completely sure this is a laser treatment? What kind of laser could be used for 15 mins 5 days a week. I just sounds more like an LED treatment to me - or maybe a soft laser device.
But I agree with Bethany - I would be uncomfortable getting something done to only one side of my face. If it were to make a visible difference, I'd be wanting to know how they planned to even me up!
Is there an escape option if you do it for a couple of weeks and then decide it's not for you? |

Ideally they are looking for people who can complete all 4 months. But if you have a problem you can leave.
I think it's actually $50 a pop and not $25 but I can't remember. But obviously they don't want people to show up for a few treatments and leave or it will mess up their data.
They told me that the OTC product has an active ingredient (can't remember what it is, maybe PHAs) and does produce visible results. Apparently they are trying to show that their product is better. They told me that their product does not produce dramatic results--it's a very low intensity laser. It won't create redness.
But of course you can leave the study if you are having adverse results. |

I spend way more than half an hour on my skincare routine everyday, considering the gadgets I use. I would consider it a skincare vacation to do the study. BUT, I would certainly have to stay away from EDS for the entire 4 months, because there's no way I could resist trying something during that time if I visited here.
Good luck making your decision. |

I would avoid, especially if the cream on one side of your face is likely to make you breakout! Imagine trying to get up the courage to leave the house if you looked like 2-face out of batman! |

I would not. Too risky if something goes wrong. |

I wouldn't, Topical guinea pig maybe, but half a face just really turns me off. |

Sounds very risky. Also, are you quite sure this is a laser treatment? I agree with Keliu this does not sound like a laser treatment. Laser usually is a one time deal and you need at least 10 days to heal from the process. |

No way, definitely not! But I'm paranoid about symmetry issues... |
