Dabawaney,
Indians use henna mostly, so I'm sure the Bay area has plenty of indian salons that will do the henna for you, or indian shops will carry the henna.
I personally have "virgin" hair - never had a perm or coloring - but I'm in my mid 30's and the grey strands are starting to increase - so I'm going to have to come up with a solution soon. I dread the day I have to start coloring my hair - just another cost!!! |

Thank You Fairlyfair! I probably have to wait and not color (if I can really hold on to it) for the next 6 months or so before having it Hennaed. My grayhair is really pretty obvious now that my hair have grown at least 1/2 inch from roots. No matter what or how much I color my hair, when it starts growing from roots, it just stands out!
Thank you ladies for your suggestions, ideas and help. Appreciated it! |

So here's my question(s), does anyone there has a great solution, aside from coloring your hair of couse and letting my gray hair grow (yikes!)...
I don't think there is a great solution, unfortunately My hair is probably at least 75% gray but who knows because I've been coloring it for so long. The way I approach it is 1) total dye job not-so-dark-brown, 2) highlights, 3) when I go back in for my roots I don't do them too light so it still looks like highlights on darker hair, and 4) a layered tousled hairdo so that the roots aren't so quickly apparent. My overall hair shade is quite a few shades lighter than my natural brown because the darker the color, the gray-er the roots appear, right? My latest touch was to lighten my eyebrows a bit which were pretty dark but for a few stray grays. I get plenty tired of all this maintenance but I am NOT ready to go gray |

Thank you for your input, Nanapost! I may have to overgrow my old dye hair for awhile, can't afford yet to go to the hairstylist and if ever I have to color it again, I may have to do it all by myself here. Same as you I'm getting tired of all the maintenance and my hair is where I mostly buy stuff for...
Btw, just for curiosity sake, any studies or scientific information if by dyeing your hair too often, does affect your eyesight? I'm not sure where I've heard or read or is this just a plain myth here? |

I have no idea about that. It certainly is toxic stuff but maybe because I usually just do only my roots, it doesn't seem to bother me. I started getting gray when I was 19 and started dying it when I was about 25, when someone said to me" I really think its nice you've decided to go gray!" That day I made an appointment and the rest is history. I'm 55 and I sure don't feel like it has affected my eyesight. I've been wearing reading glasses for about 5-6 years but that's one of the unfortunate aspects of aging that seems to have happened to all my old lady friends, man friends too. Of course, usually when I have the dye on my head, I use it as a respite from my crazy life and close my eyes and chill. |

Okay, ladies/gents, I have colored my hair this weekend... and with that in mind, I have decided to not wash my hair twice but only once a day (this is a big step for me to do since I have been washing(shower) my hair twice a day for about 10 yrs.). Even bought Pureology Hydrating shampoo (big bottle) and the conditioner (small one 12oz?). I have also been using this cute 1.8 oz bottle from Neutrogen called:
Neutrogena Triple Moisture™ Healing Shine Serum
And I'm really seeing results as far as softness and shineness to my hair... I started using this serum oh about 10 days now... I just happen to find this at Target - sitting by itself in the shelf - sort of shouting at like: Take me! Take me! You won't regret!
Anyway, I'm really hoping this will bring back all the shineness of my hair (would hormones be a part of this dryness? - I'm 42 yrs. old). I would still be coloring my hair when my roots will be coming out... oh well!

Dabawenya62,
I just had a thought. If you ultimately want to let yourself go gray, what about those temporary hair colors that are not so harsh and fade with time. Then you could be letting the gray come in while covering it until your're ready to be gray. How long is your hair? I don't remember if you mentioned it before. I would think the temporary color approach would be a lot easier if your hair is somewhat short.
FWIW, Nanapost |

Hi Nanapost, my hair is somewhat short but not that short - sort of bobstyle hairstyle. I believe that if I let my hair color fade by itself, my gray hair really shows very much, starting from the roots, and that's why I have to really cover it up really good. It always show on the crown part right away and my sideburn as well.
I was even thinking of cutting it short - what they call it - barber style - really, really short! - then your suggestion above seems really a good idea! but I'm not ready to have it that way -- yet?... |

Hi everyone,
For the first time in my life, I actually "need" to color my hair to color my gray I have been coloring my hair for years just because it looks better light. I colored my hair back to its original color about 6 months ago. Now all of a sudden I have this chuck of gray hair sitting on top of my head (>40).
I am going to schedule an appt with my hair person next week and get this done. This is definitely making me feel old. My birthday is also coming up on a few weeks. Yeek!!! |
