Has any one tried milke of magnesia? I read good reviews about it on MUA but haven't tried it myself.... Very curious about it though.
Currently I'm using MAC Prep+Prime for the oily days, Laura Mercier foundation primer for the dryer days. I find MAC P+P excellent for controlling oil and gives my face a healthy glow, it goes especially well with my MMU... I use Laura Mercier foundation + tinted moisterizer on regular or dryer days where I don't need much coverage. |

I've been using the mac prep and prime for oilies as well!
I have 3 primers that I am using right now.
1) Mac Prep and prime for everyday use
2) CLarins instant smooth perfecting touch for around the eys (it is a bit thick for the rest of my face, but if you have deep wrinkles or indents that you want to cover up than this would work great)
3) Smashbox photofinish for special occasions (too expensive to wear everyday!)
I also just ordered squalene from Ice Elements, and they say it can be used as a primer as well. So I will give it a try when I get it.
I also want to try the Monistat that everyone is talking about!.

For a powder primer, I think Carekate's powder is great. The Pure Luxe primer had great reviews on MUA, but I think Carekate's works much better.
I try to avoid silicone based primers b/c I'm acne prone. I just tried Suzanne Somer's spray on primer this morning w/her foundation. I like the ease of application, but I'm not sure if the end result of the look of my foundation is due to the foundation itself, or the primer. A LM mu artist told me that liquid based primer is more effective under liquid foundation & powder w/powder foundation b/c they adhere better to each other. Maybe tomorrow I'll try the foundation w/o the primer & see if I get the same effect. Another nice thing about the mist primer is that it also primes your lips & lashes. The drawback is that it does get your brows, which isnt' really a big deal if you use brow powder/pencil, or you can just wipe it off with a q-tip. |

My daughter, the makeup diva, swears by Urban Decay's eye makeup primer for lids, and Sephora's own brand primer for face. The Sephora is only 12.00, and she likes it much better then other brands we've tried. She has oily skin, sensitive, and has had no problems with it. |

I use a Trish McEvoy, it does really working but I'm wondering at the moment whether my occasional breakouts are linked to when I use it.
In a magazine recently a famous make up artist recommended 2-3 drops of Neroli oil, she said it really plums up your skin. Just got a Decleor sample of this from EDS so will try it! |

I've tried the following primers:
Monistat Chafing Gel: I like this the best! It invisibly fills in pores and leaves skin feeling so smooth. I don't use it often though because I feel like it just can't be good for the face (I have no scientific evidence or any bad experience; it's just mistrust).
Smashbox Photofinish Primer: This is almost as good as Monistat.
Lorac: Too runny and didn't notice much effect.
Aqua: Same as Lorac.
Laura Gellar Spackle: Feels/works like a not-so-great moisturizer.
I tend to save primers for when I really want my makeup to last. I do not want to use both a moisturizer/sunscreen and a primer on a daily basis (too time-consuming and complicated), so usually I choose just the moisturizer/sunscreen. |

I second with DHC Velvet Skin Coat primer. DHC is a Japanese brand. I've tried many, many primers, Nars, Laura Mercier, MAC etc... and I like this one the best. Although I've never tried Monistat, I may have to try it just for fun.
Here's a link to DHC's Velvet skincoat.

Lots of luck!! |

after reading alot of good reviews about
Smashbox primer, I decided to try it myself.
my skin is not usually oily, whenever i use those oil blotting papers, after a wholeday I can only see oil on like half of the sheet and its always so light.
So when I used the smashbox primer today, omg i was using my blotting paper jsut to test if it makes my skin oily or not and holy cr*p, i used two sheet of paper! it did make my face really soft and smooth but i dont think I will use it on my forhead and my nose anymore. |

I definitely agree! I had only previously used Laura Mercier's oil-free primer back when my skin was oily and I just hated the way it felt because it was still way too oily for me. But the DHC velvet skin felt so great on my skin. I have been having rough texture recently and it created such an even feel, I am sometimes tempted to use it without makeup because I swear it helps even my skin tone. However, I will also say I have only used it like 3 or 4 times but I think I can safely say its pretty awesome. |

Where does one get DHC in the UK? Typically, that website doesn't ship here
I did notice on the DHC website they had a special if one bought two of the primers....if anyone is placing an order anyway and feeling kind, please could you PM me about getting me a tube at the same time they place an order... |

Same here! I just got a sample of the velvet skin coat in the mail and loved it so much I just bought it. Only caution is that you probably want to avoid the DHC if silicones make you break out. I had the Laura Mercier previously and also hated it (and I love her oil free tinted moisturizer). |

I tried MOM, not sure who this would work for, but it made my entire skin white...so the next time I rubbed it in, and that did no go either. Did not cover anything. How do you use MOM, if you don't leave a coat on your face. Then try to appy your mineral powder over that??? |

I second the peter thomas roth primer,(I just wear it by itself) but I got a sample of the velvet skin coat the other day in the mail, so I think I'll actually test it out rather than putting it in storage after reading the opinions on it. |

What's the actual name of the product? I looked on EDS and it's not available |

Hi there - you might want to give Clarins' Skin Perfecting Touch a try (I love it) OR you could give Laura Geller's Spackle a shot...it doesn't have oil and is lighter than Smasbox's primer (IMHO)...In the winter months, the Laura Geller Primer is too drying for me so if you are worried about oiliness this one might be the one for you.

Pudoodles, I have been eye-ing the Laura Geller Spackle line at Sephora. I was especially interested in the Eye Spackle and Lip Spackle and a concealer called Caulk Pencil. I think I will have to pay a visit to Sephora athis weekend. |

I've added another primer to my makeup bag
Napoleon Autopilot.
I bought this a few months ago and hated it. It didn't provide as much of an even silky base as smashbox, clarins, or Mac prep and prime.
So It has been sitting in my bag for a while and then i tried the new rimmel 16hour matte mouse and this primer works nicely under it.
It evens out your moisture level on your skin- I don't feel like I need a moisturizer with it at all.
I still use smashbox for heavier coverage, clarins around the eyes and mac prep and prime on and off. But the autopilot is only for days when using the rimmel mousse and I don't need too much coverage.

I used to like the Smashbox Photo Finish best but just started using the Perfect Skin Line-Reflecting serum (cellularskinrx)and it's my new favorite. Besides reflecting light away from my wrinkles, it softens and mattifies my face so it looks (no doubt, an illusion)all even-toned and soft, smooth....I use it plain or mix with concealer or sometimes foundation then apply.
One comment on trying to decide on one for your wedding day: take a picture outside and inside with each one you are test-driving (in same place at same time)so you can really see which will look good in your photos. Good luck! |

Makeupforever (MUFE) have a All Mat primer, it's very smoothing and truly velvty matt after application.
Alternatively for a bit more pore-filling, there's the shiseido mattifying stick or the clinique instant pore perfector. These are better in filling in any holes, but probably not serious ones though.
All 3 are good with oilies. |

Better at 40, I saw that Cellularskin-rx has this new product that you mentioned. Do you think you could use it undr mineral makeup? It sounds like it works via light-refraction, so would it be useless once you covered it with something? |

I'm currently using DHC Velvet Skin Coat and so far I'm not all that impressed. Although it's cheap it comes in such a small size. It has a strange petroleum-y smell to it and feels dry going on my skin. I'm still undecided whether it helps my makeup last longer or cover up my pores at all. I think I'll try Laura Mercier and MAC next. Has anyone here tried Jane Iredale eyeshadow primer or MAC prep+prime eye? |
