whilst taking a break from my stats Rolling Eyes I decided to investigate trying to get hold of my fave perfume (now they have reformulated magie noir Mad )

I found this site that sells decants of really hard to get hold of and expensive perfumes. I have just ordered after a great email exchange with the owner and I'm impressed with the prices and the customer service. I will of course keep you informed about how fast they deliver, but not having to buy tabac blond in tiddly little decants is going to be heaven!

now back to work!

CARON PARFUM
oh my god, did i fail here! they were hovering over me like vultures. it seems if you walk in there with an american accent, you must be coming to buy -- a lot! yeah, right.... this new boutique i went to was even worse than the other one, though much larger. the urns were nicely spread out, etc. but they watched my every move to the extent i did not even try on the scents i wanted to. on the bright side, two that had failed the other day now have real possibilities -- TB and Poivre. of course, those are for winter and we're now moving into spring and everyone's favourite seems to be Tubereuse (white flowers are "in" right now). well, much to the chagrin of the SA, it smelled hideous on me (though i'm actually kind of liking it now). her favourite on me by far was the Poivre and i actually got a little sample. they were probably right not to leave me there -- i would have grabbed samples of En Avion and Alpona as well as TB and the Tubereuse if i could have gotten away with it.

the smallest size, in a very simple but elegant bottle for the urn parfums was €75. these are *not* refillable. the spray bottles (which can be refilled) hold a lot more fragrance and, obviously, cost a lot more money. they're not very attractive either. had i not seen money signs in the eyes of the SA, i would have actually remembered the cost. as it is, my head started swirling when she was getting into the 300 range. i was intimidated, i admit it. i *hate* when that happens!

there was one thing, though, that may put things in perspective -- a fairly nice sized 2007 limited edition Tabac Blond for a steal.... only €1,350. i tried in vain to get a pic but it was pissing down outside and they only had it in a window display. (when i tried to take a pic indoors, the security guard started growling.) to be honest, though, i much prefer the bottles that were on ebay....

give me UK prices and sizes and i will try again. if i have something written down, i can easily jot in figures next to it. i'm truly sorry i was so inept.

CARON POUDRE
i did a little better here, but only barely. at least i got most of the prices....

the loose powder -- €37.00
compact powder -- €33.50
powder base -- €25.00
swan's down puff -- €36.00
mini swan's down puff (to put in the compact) -- €10.00
badger shair kabuki -- €21.50
i failed to find the price for the mini-powder glass case -- sorry!

the badger hair kabuki is not one of these soft, sweet powder brushes that all the girls wearing MMU go mad for. this is one tough brush. not harsh, but tough. i actually like it because it gets rid of all the excess powder so you don't look heavily made up. (those softer brushes are good for rubbing in -- not rubbing off). the puffs are simply to dies for! i'm sorry, but you just can't help but feel like a queen using one of these.... the teensy size for the compact is an absolute must because, gorgeous as the compact is, the supplied piece of tissue (okay, it may be slightly more substantial) they give you to apply it is a joke. the powder inside, however, is probably the finest compact powders i've ever felt (and it's classy looking too). it only comes in three shades, but they just melt on you.

speaking of disappointing, however, it has to be the actual containers they sell the big powders in. they're crap. CDP has them in spades here. i'm sorry, but they are so slippery that they just slide out of your hands. (yeah, i know, i'm a gimp, but still!) and although they don't spill per se, the powder does escape in the container and you have it every where. the supplied puff is not horrid (i prefer CDP's slightly more), but it does not do the powder justice.

regarding colour: yeah, right. and i thought i'd find an exact match to CDP. not going to happen. the closest was one of the Classic formulas in Rose Bonne Mine. unfortunately, that means it is *not* sheer and may leave a pinky cast whereas CDP blends with all tones. then there is one of the shimmering transparent powders in Vénitienne. it's a deeper pink and it does shimmer (not glitter). i think it could be stunning on some darker skin tones, but pale-faced ladies could only use this for blush. the other two shimmers are Galaxie and Opalescente, the first must have been done for Casper the Ghost. Opalescente, though, may be calling my name....

as for a colour and me and the Classics, i've given up for the time being (the lighting sucked and i was feeling cranky about my failure in the perfume department and was thinking how GG would never speak to me again). i think Trente Ans is it, but.... the sheers, however, have a very nice range (and these would be instead of the CDP or over the powder base or TM if your face was looking flawless). i was torn between the two lightest shades, Transparente and Translucide. i could've honestly gone either way (that damned lighting again!), but decided to go for the slightly darker one, Translucide, as spring is quick approaching. and it *does* tone down the red quite a bit, but not as nicely as the Classic formula does. however, what is most gorgeous about it (and the compact powder) is that you can layer and layer and layer and it just never tooks obscene. not that i recommend doing so, but my face sweats something fierce in the summer (my hair is the equivalent of a long fur coat) and i can end up with multiple powder applications in a day. this is the *first* powder i've found that i think can handle it without me looking like i splashed pancake batter on my face....
