I'm petrified of spiders and know how you feel. I'm sure that there are ways of keeping the little guys away from you. I know nothing else about Australia but the spider part had my quivering attention  |

Hi Marcia,
I can't help you with any specific info about Perth (other than I hear it's a beautiful city) having never been there myself but seriously I really don't think you have anything to worry about with snakes and spiders.
I've lived in three different states of Australia so far in both city and rural areas and I have only ever seen a snake twice in my life (outside of a zoo that is!) If you're living in the city the chances of seeing a snake would be pretty slim I think.
As for spiders there are a few nasty ones about but nothing a bit of bug spray won't fix  . If you are really worried you can buy some surface spray and spray around all the doors and windows so they can't get in.
Another trick if you can handle it is to leave the daddy long legs spiders in the house. They are not scary looking and can't bite humans but are supposed to kill all the other bad spiders.

Very warm usually. I dont live in Perth, but my family live in WA, and I've spent a bit of time in Perth during summer. It is always balmy in Perth in Nov/Dec, it really does have one of the best climates in the world. There is generally always a sea breeze, and the nights are divine!
I love Perth, and if it was for my SO, I would move there tomorrow!
As for the spiders, I just accept them as part of life now, the only ones I kill on site are white-tails, now they are EVIL!! But not that common. Red backs generally hide, and you dont see them unless your looking under your house, in pot plants etc,they steer away from humans. White tails hunt in your house, they have no webs, and seek out other spiders....not to alarm you though - they've never killed anyone, just give you a nasty bite if you aggrevate one. 
At least you dont have to worry about funnel-web spiders, they are NASTY!! (but only in NSW....currently....)

Funny that you should say whitetails eat daddy long legs, generally they leave them alone, as daddly long legs are more venimous - but daddy long legs really only eat insects like small flies and moths. Did try a small experiment years ago, and the spiders were at a stand-off(but that was when I was much younger and cruel....)
Red-backs are the only ones that have been known to really make you sick - but you can easily avoid them by being cautious (see above). Good luck |

Redbacks aren't quite as venomous as people think. The only people badly affected by them are young children and possibly the elderly due to weakened immune systems. I was bitten by a redback when I was 15, taken to hospital but not even given an anti venom shot, just some anti nausea medication. I felt unwell for a couple of days but that was it.
Perth is an attractive city with a pleasant climate and a younger average population than most of the other capital cities in Australia. It is also clean, basically free of graffitti and has the best public transport system of any of the capital cities. Its crime rate is roughly the same as Melbourne and Sydney, per head of population, but slightly less than that of Adelaide. If you husband is in the building industry, then start making contacts now, that's the best way to get a decent house and avoid the current rent crush.
Because of the younger than average population there's a fair amount of good quality night life - Perth has some of the best nightclubs in Australia - plus lots of cafe's, bars, pubs and restaurants. There's also a thriving art scene. |
