My life is pretty much a never-ending battle with my hair. I have longish extremely fine hair that gets oily at the roots and goes flat at the drop of a hat. To make matters worse, I look TERRIBLE with flat hair, and I prefer to wear it blown back with a TON of volume, a la Angelina Jolie. However, when your hair is longish and fine like mine, getting a decent amount of volume can be a tricky proposition. I learned long ago to just FORGET about drugstore mousses. I basically tried them all, and none of them did enough where it made me want to re-purchase. I then started using Pureology's mousse, and while it was a serious improvement over the drugstore mousses, I still had some trouble getting the serious, over-the-top, out-of-control volume I craved. Enter the product which I am reviewing today:
Philip Pelusi Liquid Mousse!! (If I could throw some sparkles on there, I totally would, lol!) I was running low on my Pureology mousse and I was too lazy to order more, so when I was in my salon I asked my stylist for a rec, and this is what she advised me to buy. "It builds a lot of body!" she told me enthusiastically. "Sure it does..." I thought to myself, since pretty much no hair products live up to their hype for me. Still, my stylist knows her stuff and I like the fact that this line is NOT tested on animals, so I figured I'd give it a shot.
Right off the bat I knew this stuff was different. For one thing, it's not in an aerosol can. Instead it's in one of those self-foaming pumps, like Naturderm's Lavender face foam comes in. As a result, the mousse itself has a very different texture than what I'm used to. Most aerosol mousses seem very light, dry, and insubstantial--- I usually have to use like a tennis ball-sized amount. In contrast, this mousse was wet and quite dense, so I found I needed to use less product than I normally do. (Quick tip: I read somewhere that to build major volume you need to work your mousse into your roots EXTREMELY vigorously, as if you were working in shampoo) All I can say is, WOW!! I have never built so much volume so effortlessly in my whole life! However, because I wash my hair at night, the real test for me is how my hair looks when I wake up the next morning. Usually by the next morning it's flatter than a pancake and I end up having to desperately coax some more volume back into it with a round brush and blowdryer. So, as you can imagine, it was quite a nice surprise for me when I rolled out of bed the next morning and found that I STILL had the same amazing volume from last night. That in and of itself would be enough to raise this mousse to HG status for me, however, there's more. Under most circumstances, if I skip so much as a single shampoo, the next morning my roots are super greasy and my hair is matted to my head--- not a pretty picture. However, since I started using this mousse I've noticed that even if I do skip a shampoo, the following morning my hair still has plenty of volume and is definitely NOT matted to my head. Just for the sake of science I decided to see what would happen if I skipped TWO shampoos. The result? I woke up with really greasy hair and had to put it up in a bun for the rest of the day. I guess even miracles have their limits, lol!!
An 8 oz bottle of this miracle mousse costs $20--- pricey, but so worth it! You can buy it at salons that sell Pelusi products, and I believe you can also order it directly from:

Just went on the website and used the salon finder--it reported that there are three salons in my area. But the closest one is over 900 miles away!! So much for getting to test drive the stuff at a salon...
Luckily you can order online. And if you join the forum, you get 20% off your first order. Sounds like a deal...
BTW, has anyone tried any of their other products? As long as I'm putting in my first order, I want to maximize the value of the discount. TIA. |

Liz, how do you use your mousse? Do you apply it on wet or dry hair and do you blow dry after you apply it? Also, do you use it at night right after you shower? TIA. |
Lisey, I use it when my hair is wet. I get out of the shower and wrap my hair in a towel turban for a few minutes to get the excess moisture out, then I rub a bunch of this mousse in and go to town with my blow dryer and round brush. (BTW, I have just fallen in *love* with this new conair round brush--- it's got a gel-filled handle that conforms to my hand so it's easy to get a grip, and the ceramic-coated barrel really makes my hair shine!) After my hair is dry I got to bed, and then when I wake up I neaten it up a bit again with the round brush and blow dryer, and then I spritz with finishing spray. (Right now for Finishing Spray I use Pureology's Incharge, and I like it better than anything else I've tried, but after Cuddles' rec I might go for the Pelusi next time... I'd be interested to hear what everyone else uses and likes...)
Cuddles, I'm glad to hear that your hair kept its style longer! I noticed the same thing--- often times half way through the day my hair just falls completely flat against my head (like the picture of me in the red dress, ugh!), but when I use this mousse, even if I'm having an "off" day and don't have a ton of volume, if nothing else my hair does keep its style and doesn't end up plastered against my head. |

Hey Razinkane, I used to like Biolage products, but now either my hair changed or I don't know what. Kerastase shampoo #1 works great, but I can only use it sometimes as I get some kind of tiny pustules on my scalp. So now for the first time in several years I'm also looking for a new shampoo. Anybody have any ideas? It's crazy because my hair is dry, if anything. Could the Kerastase be old?
But getting back to this Pelusi mousse, it works incredibly well on my fine, thin hair and since it says you can use it on dry hair or wet, I use it on wet when I first shampoo my hair and since my hair is now dehydrated (I don't want to use the word "dry" again as in this situation it is ambiguous), I don't have to wash it every day, so the next day I put a little more mousse on and it fluffs up nicely again. It seems to like/need the finishing spray, just a little of it does the trick. I have to say I am very happy with it and will reorder. BTW mine came in record time 2-3 days.
There were a few muggy days here in Chicago and it didn't perform quite as well, but it's still too early to tell whether it works best in dry weather, though that was an impression I had. After I test it out and return from my trip to no. Italy will let everybody know how it performed.
I am anxious to hear how others liked it, so do tell us your experiences with it, okay? |

Hey gals, I just saw this thread and thought I'd weigh in - Giovanni's mousse is very similar to what you described - super-dense, non-aerosol, and builds shocking volume for a mousse. Just in case you ever want to try a cheaper alternative! I'm not sure how the two compare, but thought it might be worth mentioning. |

Hey Ginnie - I've been on a bit of a Giovanni kick lately and decided I had to try the Natural Mousse (that comes in a clear bottle that is air-turbo charged). I had high expectations so I was quite shocked to discover that it didn't provide a single bit of volume in my hair at all (I'm talking NOTHING!). I was so disappointed and found this very wierd!?! So, are you referring to the same mousse or is there another one I'm not aware of?
Ironically, a product I didn't expect much from and that delivers exceptional volume is Life Brand's Honey Nut Mousse (available at Shoppers Drug Mart in Canada for $3.99). It isn't organic but it is alcohol-free. I am quite impressed with the amount of volume this inexpensive mousse provides, in addition to the fact it doesn't leave my hair feeling sticky at all. For any of our Canadian members looking for a cheaper mousse to add volume to their fine hair, give this product a try! ![](images/smiles/049.gif) |
