I have been using avocado oil on my face and have experienced great results, far better than with ANY commercial product I've tried. I find avocado oil to be even more regenerative than rosehip seed oil.

I wonder if any natural skin care/natural oil experts on the board can comment on why avocado oil would have such skin regenerative properties. I know rosehip seed oil has trans-retinoic acid, but having used both rosehip seed oil and now avocado oil, I truly find the effects of avocado oil to be far more pronounced.

An old chicken pox scar is noticeably diminished, breakouts have significantly decreased in both frequency and severity, and those breakouts that do happen heal much faster. Fine lines are lessened and pores seem smaller, cleaner. The skin tends to "slough" slightly as it would with a mild retinoid, but the underlying "new" skin is clearer, fresher, less lined, less scarred, etc. Redness is also reduced. This is an amazing skin treatment, so simple, and for such a small price!

Please note that I am using cold-pressed avocado oil, and not refined avocado oil. I've tried the latter and it is a marvelous moisturizer, but the regenerative effects have only come from the cold-pressed version. Cold-pressed avocado oil has a green tint, and so I apply it only at bedtime, although some may find the green tint counters mild facial rudiness. The refined avocado oil is golden in color.

The bottle I purchased at Whole Foods is black glass (which protects the unrefined oil from light).
The brand name is Virginlands. The front of the bottle clearly states that is is cold-pressed, and that it is made from Haas avocados. Great stuff!

Yes, avocado oil is fine for acne. Not only won't it exacerbate acne, but it helps heal breakouts and prevent future acne. The oil breaks up solidified sebum/dead skin cell plugs in pores (which ultimately create acne eruptions) and it seems to act as an anti-inflammatory to reduce existing acne breakouts.
Every day I'm more and more amazed by the benefits of avocado oil! Such a simple, inexpensive product to be so very beneficial and effective for the skin. Love it!

Hi, ladies this post talked me into purchasing the avocado oil from GOW. I purchased the unrefined, dark green stuff and I am sad to say that I can not tolerate the smell. I gagged everytime I have attempted to use it. Can someone tell me what I can add to this oil to make it more pleasant. I was thinking about adding some essential oil but I do not know which one. Please help!

Ya know, Starlight, I've found this to be the case now that I'm being pickier and choosing only unrefined oils. The refined stuff that we're used to buying and cooking with (which is much easier to get ahold of) is often so deodorized and bleached that it all resembles the same thing.

I don't have a ton of great advice, because the main thing I did was just stick with it. Laughing My unrefined, organic, cold-pressed soybean oil had a very weird smell to it that was nothing like normal oils, and it was also BRIGHT orange. I didn't like the smell at all when I first got it, but the longer I've used it, the more I've come to enjoy it -- it smells more, well, natural, and I came to appreciate that over time.

Another thing I did is add a bit of sweet orange and lemon essential oils -- I find that citrusy oils mask weird fragrances nicely. (I actually did this to mask the scent of the clary sage oil I had included in my blend, since that smelled worse than the soybean oil!) However, because most citrus EOs are photosensitizers, you may want to avoid doing this for facial blends. (I only did it on my body.)

Yet another tip I have is to try combining your avocado oil with some unrefined organic macadamia nut oil. This stuff has a very rich, buttery, food-like smell, and while it can be a bit distracting in the face of some EOs, I find it to be a much more pleasant smell than other unrefined carrier oils. And it's so strong that it kind of takes over as the top note in any blend, IMO.

Anyway, I hope this helps -- I think the benefits of unrefined oils outweigh the quirks, but I totally agree that the unusual colors and scents can kind of take you aback at first. Here's hoping you can adjust so it's not a wasted purchase. Smile Good luck!

There is some evidence that Avocado oil increases collagen and elastin formation. Keep in mind that few studies are ever done on naturally occuring substances that are NOT patentable, because the study process is expensive and unless the substance is patentable for commercial use, there is no gain from the financial outlay. Therefore, we aren't likely to see pure avocado oil itself undergo too many studies for cosmetic purposes, unless an aspect of the oil can be patented (see 302 Skincare products). Or, as with L-ascorbic acid, if a preservation method was patentable studies may be conducted with an eye on future commercial gain. A special preservation method is unnecessary with avocado oil.

Yes, if the bottle states cold-pressed unrefined and the product is light green, it should be genuine. My cold-pressed avocado oil does NOT have an offensive nor strong scent at all---it smells faintly nutty, but it is not noticeable when I wear it. Perhaps the offensive dark green oil mentioned by a poster in ths thread has gone rancid? The scent should be light, almost imperceptible, and the color akin to a good quality extra virgin olive oil---a light to moderate green, but definitely green and not gold.

Also, cold-pressed, unrefined avocado oil has tiny oily particulates in it, while golden, refined avocado oil does not.

I found this company called Lovacado, and they sell unrefined avocado oil, but they've mixed it with essential oils, so they smell great. I purchased a bottle online and have been using it for a few months now. I've noticed visible changes in my skin too, especially since we've had a rough winter. Normally I have to put on cream three times a day because my skin is so dry, but now I just put on the oil after the shower and my skin is fine all day. The say the oil is good for hair too, so now I've been using it on my hair for the last two weeks and I've ceased using my conditioner. I believe the company is in Canada, but they ship everywhere. I wouldn't recommend the lavender, it's a bit strong, but the lemon and and sweet orange options smell great!
