Skippie, I'm not sure which would be the most suitable for you without looking at the ingredients and having some idea of your skin type. But...from the names, I am *guessing* that the Nourishing one is for dry skin, the Balancing one is for combination skin and the Refining one is for oily/blemished skin. You can ask the sales assistants to check on this. Actually the Kose Sekkisei lotion is very effective to brighten your skin IF you are not sensitive to alcohol and your skin is not dehydrated. It does give radiance to the complextion and is a very popular product here in Asia. I believe that Kose have come up with another version that's targetted towards mature/drier skin but I am not sure of the name.
Cheaper tablet masks can be purchased from SaSa (if you live in Asia).
You are right. DIY lotion masks from cleansing pads or whatever are a hassle. Not only do you have to spend time peeling the layers of cotton and "assembling" the mask on your face but you also have to wash the container that you used for spraying the mask. I don't see myself doing this every day.
I have to confess to being a fan of SK2 Facial Treatment Essence (expensive habit). I have mature skin and it works for me. I use a very thin but wide cotton pad and press it against my skin for some seconds before moving to another area of the face. By leaving it a few seconds on the skin, more of the essence soaks in and less is wasted on the pad. The pad is pretty dry by the time I've finished "pressing" it all over my face. I'm usually a zombie in the morning and really can't face assembling the lotion mask. |

Funny, Keliu. While you were looking up the NARS, I was looking up the Olay Regenerist Mask. The only sites that popped up for mask were Australian sites. I wonder if that means it's not available in the U.S.
That's a great site, DM. |

Here you go, Tonia:
2 OZ. LOTION MASK ALA KASSY..
- 1 oz of tea (I make my usual 8oz mix of green and white teas, and will decant 1oz for this)
- 1 TBS SKB (room temp or zapped for 3 or 4 secs in microwave)
- 1 tsp coconut oil
- 1/2 tsp grapeseed extract (or oil)
- 1/2 tsp algae extract (nice skin tightener + nourishing)
1/2 tsp kukui oil or extract (nice skin brightener/lightener for hyperpigmentation)
- matrixyl and/or argereline (great for fine lines/wrinkles.. use the recommended amount for a 2oz serum)
Just mix everything into the SKB one at a time stirring really well.
As you can see there are little or no preservatives, so it's best to keep in fridge. |

Here's specifically what she says about the lotion:

A key part of my skincare program is the lotion mask. Though involving only lotion, water, and cotton, it works miracles. Lotions-not to be confused with toners or astringents-condition your skin surface. There are basically two types: hydrating lotions and brightening lotions. The ingredients are typically 80% water and 10% alcohol, along with an assortment of moisturizing agents and therapeutic ingredients. I strongly recommend only those lotions that contain little or no alcohol. |
The NARSskin Hydrating Freshening Lotion is the only one she lists as an example. I looked at Japanese skincare lines to see if I could find a hydrating lotion and settled on the Shiseido lotion for now. But I'm sure there are other lotions that can be used, probably some that are cheaper. Kassy has a DIY recipe that I'll probably incorporate as soon as I get the ingredients.
She also suggests using the lotion mask while taking a bath. She says to cut holes in a shower cap and put over your face & lotion mask. I tried this last night but had trouble because of the pieces of cotton. I think this would definitely work better with a one piece mask, such as the Kose tablets or the other tablets mentioned above. |
Here are the ingredients of the NARS Hydrating Freshening Lotion (taken from the Sephora website):
Aqua (Water), Alcohol Denat (SD Alcohol 40-B), Glycerin, Betain, PPG-13 Decyltetradeceth-24, Carbomer, Alcohol, Arginine, Butylene Glycol, Trisodium EDTA, Propylene Glycol, Vitis Vinifera (Grape Seed Oil), Prunus Persica (Peach Kernel Extract), Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Barbadensis Extract), Lilium Candidum (White Lily Extract), Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, Propylparaben.
Sephora does list this as a toner. Not sure it would be suitable for mature dry skin (although the name of the product does imply that it is hydrating). HTH |

Being the avid recycler I am I hated the idea of using throw away cotton every time I did the lotion mask, so I simply made a masks out of pure cotton mens handkerchiefs by cutting out holes in the appropriate places. I only use the lotion mask a couple of times a week, normally when I'm in the bath. After thoroughly washing my face I soak the hankie in warm water, wring it out and then spray it thoroughly with my homemade lotion (roswater, glycerin, allantoin, vitamin e and essential oils for my skin type) and place it over my face while I relax in the bath. The steam from the bath stops it from drying out and means it penetrates really well and I normally leave it on for about 10-15 minutes.
It leaves my skin looking bright and well rested and ready for moisturiser. |

Riley,
She recommends Webril cotton pads in the book. I'm actually using cotton mats that I bought at Sally's Beauty Supply. They're used by manicurists. I cut them into pieces. Sally's also sells some of the Webril products, I think. |

Thanks so much, Skippie. You saved me digging back through the thread. Do they "stick" on your face well? I bought 30 of the plain sheet masks but like I said they don't stay on my face! |

Re 'lotions', I remember when Shisheido was first released, they used cleanser, lotion, moisturiser and toner in that order. (Yes I'm that old!!) The toner was supposed to 'set' the moisturiser in the skin. I always found it a bit strange. They still have a softener prior to moisturiser, but no longer have the toner afterwards (I think).
So I guess (as many have said)the lotion or softener is used with a cloth of sorts. I'm still not sure which is the best cloth or paper to sue though. What about a muslin cloth? |
luckylouie recommended a cotton men's handkerchief which I think is a wonderful idea. I'm going to try that when I run out of the cotton pads I'm currently using. |

What are you using with the mask? If you don't mind giving out your secrets! LOL

I am actually experimenting with different topicals under the mask (strips now that I have those that Kassy posted about!). Want to see if I can use this method to penetrate products. |
