Like many of you, I have tried facial exericse, Baby Quasar, Derma Roller etc but did not see any big improvement. I came across the Tanaka massage while browsing an online bookstore in China. At first, I don't have much expectation, I own too many beauty books, I read but never try anything seriously in my life. These facial books, DVDs are very cheap to get in China, just a few USD or even less.

I bought the Tanaka book is because of the before/after pictures after 5 minutes massage. Tanaka looks very young, can you believe she is 60+? I thought she is 40+. I viewed the DVD once and followed the book for the 1st massage, and WOW!!! I looked so much better in 5 mins.

(à la moonstone)

I have been doing the massage in morning and evening for 7 months now. I have shared my before/after photos with people here. (no longer share, please don't ask) I am in my 40s, the overall comment here is I'm in my 20s, and I believe they just want to make me happy, I think I'm more like 30+, but happy for that.

Tanaka massage is created by a Japanese beautician, Yukuko Tanaka. This program has sold 1 million copies in Japan. As far as I know, there are Japanese and Chinese versions available in the market. The quality of the book and DVD are very good for both version.

Our original discussion is getting very confusing, please check if you're interested:

Let's get started, have your massage cream or oil ready:

http://www.tudou.com/programs/view/1X8iUmxuQvc/

The Tanaka massage has 11 steps:

Warm-up exercise to prompt the flow of lymph
STEP1 Improve the swelling of the forehead and the wrinkles between the eyebrows
STEP2 Remove the swelling around the eyes and improve the puffy eyes
STEP3 Pushing up the downside mouth corners
STEP4 Remove the blots on the nostrils and make the bridge of your nose higher
STEP5 Remove the deep nasolabial grooves and left up the entire cheeks
STEP6 Remove the nasolabial groove in a focused way
STEP7 Remove the fat beside the nasal wings not to make the nasolabial grooves appear
STEP8-1 Dissolve the sags in the areas between the cheekbones and the chin
STEP8-2 Remove the “bulldog line”
STEP9 Remove a double chin and tighten a vague face line
STEP10 Pull up the whole facial sag
STEP11 Erase the transverse wrinkling on the forehead

Common mistakes (please view the video):

http://www.tudou.com/programs/view/udVpsMWKljc/

1. 20.20 shows how to position your palm correctly. Your hands should be touching your nose and push upwards.

2. 20.53 shows how to glide down correctly from your ear to collar. Your face will sag if you do it wrong, 21.21 to 21.28 is a incorrect position.

This is from Tanaka's book:

1. What does this massage has to do with muscle, bone & lymph drainage?

Tanaka was once a make-up artist for film and TV. She noticed that many people at their 40+ can keep a very good look body but they can't do much for their face. Her role was to make sure people look young and fresh in front of the screen, so she tried aesthetic facial massage before applying make-up for them but did not work. She spent many years to learn about the inter-relation of skin / muscle / bone / lymph. Finally, she developed the Tanaka massage.

2. What is the difference between Tanaka massage and aesthetic facial massage?

The normal aesthetic facial massage is gentle making circular movement on the skin. The Tanaka massage is using the 10 fingers + palms, with lots of pressure. Many steps are involving in push-up your muscle and bone.

I should mention this at the beginning.

As per Tanaka users request, this thread is for users to share their result and techniques, not for any company or individual to take this opportunitiy to promote their program.

Thank you for your co-operation and understanding.

Hi there,

JLM wrote:
Because this is a new EDS username, Toby has generously offered to post the link to my photobucket account so that anyone who's interested can take a look at my NL photo.

The image is reversed, so that the NL line on the right is on the left side of my face.

This picture was taken about 2 weeks after beginning the Tanaka/ Zogan massage-- sorry I don't have any before pics. My skin is in horrible shape right now-- hopefully it will eventually clear. (I just bought the book, "The Japanese Skincare Revolution" by Chizu Saeki. Lots of good advice & commonsense. She says that it takes about 3 months after changing one's diet before the changes are evident in one's skin. Only 2 more months to go then!)

I feel that this picture gives a pretty accurate representation of what my NL's look like right now. (Though at very close range!) They are still visible, and I would like to completely eradicate them! Still, they are much better than before, much less deep.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I once had Radiesse put in in the NL's, less than an entire syringe for both sides. So they were not that deep to begin with, but at this point, I don't think that I would be a candidate for filler.

I plan to continue the massage & the facial exercises that target this area-- Top Furrow Adv from FE in particular. However, I'm becoming a little wary about incorporating the lower face exercises, since I'm thinking that it's just too easy for muscles to build up that area & develop "mouth pouches" and such. I'll probably end up doing them just every once in a while.

Also, I feel the green smoothies have been really helpful in detoxing. (Though I believe that the smoothies have also been the primary factor behind the spots! Again, 2 more months to go!)

At this point, I feel that if I could just get some more sleep, my NL problem would be mostly solved... unfortunately, I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon. So, I'll just keep on working with what I've got & see what happens! I will post again with an updated picture if there is any more marked improvement.

Okay here we go, this is JLM and she is looking good!!!!

sister sweets,

I like to use oils or the cream that I mix: base cream with SKB, Liquid Oat Beta-Glucans from GoW and a few drops of essential oils.

I must be the only one thinking this question, as it still goes unanswered but if you build bone, can you reverse it?

For example in facial exercises sometimes the muscles build, and we're told that if you stop doing the muscles revert back to their former state. If you build bone though, isn't bone a hard surface that is solid in comparison with muscles. So if you overbuild with bone, how does one reverse it.

I think this is very important question to ask before anyone starts bone exercises no matter what their nationality. Critic can you answer for us please?

Theresa

Not Critic, but as I have osteoporosis running in my family, I have gained a small amount of knowledge on bones which may help answer your question.

First as an adult, it is hard to 'build up' bones.
Our bone mass lessens as we age. There are two things we can do to help avoid this; taking care of what we eat (less acid, more alkali in our diet) and weight-bearing exercises (ie weight training).
It can be easier for some (myself included) to overbuild our facial muscles, which can be reversed by stopping or changing the facial exercises. The chances of you over-building your facial bones are next to none. As I'm no expert in Bone Massage, I cannot say for sure that BM cannot build up your facial bone structure but common sense tells me that this process would be a relatively slow one so before you ever got to the point of disturbing bone build-up, you would obviously stop.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Bone Massage about maintaining (perhaps restoring?) your youthful bone density rather than changing it?

ps Let me know if you're interested in acid/alkali in our diet and how it affects our bones.

Hi Zenity, sorry to hear you haven't been well.
I will begin a new thread on Skincare Tools & Do It Yourself Skincare (best place for it?) called Anti-Ageing; Acid Alkali pH balance. Will probably do it sometime tomorrow.

I *love* the Tanaka/ Zogan massage & how it has almost eliminated my NL lines, but I'm not sure whether I want to continue if my face becomes even slimmer. I think I'm going to reduce doing the massage from twice daily to once a day & make a few changes to my diet, as recommended by seanysean (increasing carbs & protein, I'm assuming). We'll see what happens. Jasminerosey, please keep us posted on how modifying the massage works out for you, and whether you notice any further or lessening of face slimming!

JLM, I don't think that is good to do massage twice a day. I did it at beginning but I haven't good results. My face seems tired and little saggy. When I reduced it to once a day (only in the morning) - results are better and better look every day. We discussed this fact before.

Mars has posted a link (in the other thread) about impact of too frequently massage on the older skin. It seems that there is a lots of truth in article on that link.

http://store.annabellina.com/massagemyth.html

Well, those site does not allow to copy and paste this paragraph, but as I understood problem is in fragility of facial older muscles and tissues. Look under the paragraph that begins with "Tension".

I saw Moonstone photo, she looks very beautiful after doing 2 months Tanaka massage and Facework. The shape of her face has slimmer and softened, and she no longer have the bulky and high cheeks that we Chinese are trying to avoid! Picture 4 looks at least 10 years younger than Pic 2.

Moonstone, can you clarify if Pic 2 is taken after Ageless or FE?

I think critic only said she had success with the tanaka massage not the bone massage since she only started it recently.
Anyway your posts are just as confusing. Why dont you try other facial exercise programmes which come in english? You must have applied a lot of pressure to damage your face.
Do you have an agenda against critic? I know you're pissed off at her because you did something based on her advice and it didnt turn out well. So now you're saying her younger appearance isnt due to the tanaka massage but weightloss?
Yes I do think she probably lost some weight but that alone is not enough to make one look younger.
If it works for you, then it works for you. I think you're the best judge as to whether something works for you. You dont really need someone else's pictures to judge the effectivenss of something.
I've been doing this massage even before critic shared her pictures. It works for me. Very Happy

I told you Theresa already that you are just throwing firecrackers around and that is what you doing around all time since than.
I am not native English speaker and I understood everything what was said in all 3 threads Critic initiated. Great thanks for Critic and all folks who participated in this.
It is not problem in Critic, or me or anything what was said in those threads. You have some issues which you must resolve with yourself alone and that's it.
Please don't bother the whole world with it anymore.

If Tanaka massage or bone massage or anything else become a problem for me, I will stop to practice it and go on to find something else what suits me and have a good results for me.
I tried some face exercises and have a few problems and stop with that immediately. Did you noticed that I ever blame some forum members for my problem? I find those exercises by advice in this forum, doing them for some time and saw that it is not good for me. I looked like crap for a few days, but I didn't try to accuse girl who wrote about that for my problem. Because it will be stupid.

Please...just stop to be so repetitive and boring.

*** One Month Update ***

I've only managed to do the massage about 10 times up until now, but should have the time now to *hopefully* do it more often.

- Immediately following the massage I see some apparent lifting and firming which has typically lasted a day or two. (I'd expect this to be more cumulative, once I'm able to do the massage daily.)

- I posted this a while back in the other thread, but feel it's worth repeating as it's quite effective. All throughout the massage, not only do I keep my back teeth clenched (as instructed), but I also find that if I keep my tongue firmly pressed into the roof of my mouth, with my head tilted slightly upward, my neck and entire jawline are getting a tremendous workout... You will feel the burn by the end of the massage, and it definitely intensifies the results for me. (To get an idea, right now while you're reading this; tilt your head upward till you feel the stretch in your neck, and now clench your back teeth, and firmly plant your tongue to the roof of your mouth.. (feel the firmness with your fingers under your chin!) Anyway, just sharing what is working well for me, in case it helps others. ...

- It's also nice to finish up this massage with the "tapping" all over that I learned from Flex Effect.

Can't wait to see what a couple of weeks of daily massage can do.

*Disclaimer*...Please exercise your right to either ignore or try my suggestions above at your own risk.. Wink

I used a rebounder for years and years ..but have recently been hearing a lot of concern..in holistic circles..about the bladder dropping it's position as a result of rebounder use... (this means potential leaking for women)..something i want to avoid..

so, instead, i am doing a lot of the t-tapp workouts which activate the lymph system as well as hormonal systems (and reset metabolism in general).. it also feels that when i do pilates my lymph is activated (and i would imagine that yoga activates the lymph system too)

How can you tell if lymph is activated?

Another question, it is once very popular in Hong Kong to offer lymph body massage to loss weight, does it really work? because it works so good for for my face fat, so I wonder if it works for body, like fat thighs?

I have never been a fan of the regular rebounder(although I liked the idea) but I love the aeropilates that has a rebounder on the end of it that you do in a laying down postion. It if fabulous for the thighs , waist, and will reduce cellulite for sure. I would think with rebounding while in a prone position there wouldn't be the issue with the bladder. Also a Chi machine is great for lymph drainage. Here are links for both

With the Tanaka, although its a great presentation of a mini lymphatic massage (and I understand Critic believes it incorporates other elements too and this might be the case for some people), I feel it misses out some essential lymphatic points and stimulation techniques. Just for example: the back of the ears and the ears themselves are highly lymphatic, and so in my own massage I include them. I incorporate movements and strokes for the back of my neck with varying degrees of pressure.

Just to be clear, its not that I'm thinking Tanaka is bad - its a great thing to start with and use, but there are many lymphatic points it doesn't touch or deal with and having studied lymphatic massage, I would like my own one that I do daily to be more comphrensive. Another thing is that I believe massage should include muscle stimulation techniques (and so always do the FlexEffect massage in my routine). I also massage the connective tissue and scalp....

I also wondered how come the points behind the ears were missing. There are different lymphatic massages. One simple that many on EDS have done in the past is with cupping. Manual cupping set came with a simple, but nice massage diagram that essentially provided lymphatic massage movements done with cupping technique, but points behind ears were also missing.... When looking at the lymph nodes diagrams it is very apparent that we have quite a few nodes behind the ears. The lymph node diagrams are quite helpful in identifying the nodes and the pass ways for lymphatic massages. In the same way as facial muscle diagrams are helpful for facial exercises.

maybe an idea for a new thread Wink
I also found that article of the holistic minded dermatologist online. It's in Dutch though, but I could translate it with the help of a translator if you are interested to read it..

Hi everyone!

I'm brand new to the board, and I found out about EDS and Tanaka massage from VivaWoman.

I couldn't find any English translation videos (just snippets of English transcripts), so I had them translated and did the voiceovers/subtitles in English myself. So just in case anyone needs clarification or follow along easier with an English video, then you can see them on my YouTube channel or my blog, Epic Beauty Guide (dot) com.

I hope you enjoy! Very Happy

You all are so kind, what a lovely reception! Very Happy

@ATester, thank you so much for the compliment! I did the massage in full 2 days in a row - last night and the night before last last (I tried it before, but it was hard for me to follow along because I had zero clue what she was saying) and I LOVE it. Funny enough, my fiancé is such a "dude" but he loves the massage and does it almost every night haha.

@Toby, you're so sweet, thank you!!

@Claudia, thank you so much. Smile

@Zoftig, I found EDS shortly after reading about Tanaka's massage and read this thread, and I felt so bad that everyone was struggling and immediately went out to find a translator haha.

@Frodo & Hermosa, I love your names hehe, and thank you very much. Smile

I'll back Kassy up here. I have oily skin and use Jojoba alone for the massage and it's marvelous. I was a bit skeptical to believe that an oily critter like me could use *more* oil on my face...although scientifically it holds up... still I was nervous. I took the leap of faith and now I do OCM and use oil to massage. Fear gone.
