I use Garden of Life Raw Organic Smoothie powder in my juice each morning.
My supplements are (only taken 5 days a week with weekends off):
Multi-Vitamin, Omega, DHEA, Vit D, Magnesium (every other day), Potassium 5 days a week when I am working out, B6 & 12 (doctors orders), Calcium, Pycnogenol, Sea Buckthorn Oil Capsules and Astaxanthin.
I taken others on and off thru the years but these are my main staples that I am a firm believer in. |

May I ask exactly what does Alpha Lipoic Acid do for the skin? What benefits did you two ladies see from it? |
I take what I do for general health sandooch, but I do feel that between a healthy diet, supplements and general healthy lifestyle your skin is improved/maintained just like any organ.
This may explain what ALA is good for:
One of the best ways to improve skin’s appearance is by reaping the benefits of Alpha Lipoic Acid, a fatty acid that generates energy. Not only does Alpha Lipoic Acid give skin more radiance, it improves the mind by preventing free radical damage. Heart disease, liver disease, cancer, cell aging, and other problems may result from harmful free radicals.

Great reference, DM, that's exactly the one I was going to use. Dr. Perricone thinks ALA is one of the best antioxidants, for skin and overall health! I've also seen ALA mentioned on articles about reducing glycation.
From my PrimaFORCE ALA bottle:
"Pure ALA scavenges free radicals and can increase your muscle's uptake of glycogen, helps partition nutrients to muscle and away from fat, enhances glucose utilization and supports healthy blood sugar levels"
My only concern is, since this is not a polyphenol, am I reducing my body's ability to to fight free radicals on its own?
Quote: |
[...] study after study not only fails to show a consistent benefit, but in many cases documents positive harm from taking antioxidants. While I continue to believe that antioxidant supplementation is helpful in certain isolated cases of acute infection, tissue damage, or a damaged or aged metabolism, for most of us antioxidants are probably worthless. In fact, antioxidant supplements can interfere with and weaken the bodys inherent ability to mount an effective defense against oxidative damage and its contribution toward degenerative diseases. |

There are so many theories out there, that just when I thought I found the king of antioxidants, I come across the article above... ![hmm](images/smiles/017.gif) |

Ha, Dark Moon you are funny!
I take potassium more when I am working out and not eating my daily bananas. My hubby's doc had him taking it along the B vitamins for helping with weight loss.
I have taken ALA too on and off during the past. Sounds like I need to maybe add it back in.
We just started on the DHEA due to the history of Alzeheimer's in my hubby's family. Can't hurt! |

If you look on the Swanson website, they say "Standardized to a guaranteed 15% petasins

Of course, that doesn't mean it's true, but I've had great experiences with Swanson and I do believe it's a reputable company.
Otherwise, there's always the patented version I mentioned above. |
Agree with you, DM! |

One of my favorite books on herbs and their uses is The Way of Herbs by Michael Tierra, mine is older, but there is a new updated version out! He covers everything including standard use, native american, TCM......It is a great resource!

Another really good "bible" on Herbs is, Back to Eden, by Jethro Kloss.
It is loaded with information and various treatments. |

LOL. I have a copy of Back to Eden also, I find the 2 are complimentary, also they do have information in each the other does not! My copy of BTE is ancient!
You can still get it:

Agreed! I have his book, albeit mine is also the older version. I see the new version is an 1998 edition, which still is a bit dated. I may buy it anyway, but wish it were even more recent. Great book, though! I also love my very old fashioned Culpepper's Herbal, too. ![Smile](images/smiles/smile.gif) |

Dark Moon....I know you and I are the same age so it wouldn't surprise me if we both bought Back to Eden at the same time. I started with the herbs in my twenties too. I will definitely add your book to my library. I can't find my copy of Back to Eden right now because I moved too many times and it's probably stored away in a box that I'm to lazy to open.
I've learned a lot from the old herbal books. Way back then Echinacea was used for many things other than trying to keep away colds. My husband is always asking me (whenever I come down with a cold) why I'm sick when I always have Echinacea in the house. I'm dubious about it's cold preventative properties but it's excellent as an anti-inflammatory agent and of course one of the best remedies for throat ailments. Many things I learned from Back to Eden.
Now, as for the colds, I work with children so it's kind of hard to keep colds away when 20 kids are sneezing and coughing all over you!! I don't have a solution for that but Echinacea and Vitamin C don't help. I think I need to find that box and unpack some herbal books ![Laughing](images/smiles/lol.gif) |

I will be taking a class in herbs soon and look forward to learning to identify them in their natural setting and make concoctions.
I think the spices, such as tumeric, cinnamon and oregano, are very underrated as potent antioxidants. Like someone else here said, I also try to drink lots of green tea daily. |

This stuff is a miracle. If you take it as soon as you feel you are getting sick, it will wipe it out in 1-2 days. I have never found anything like it that works as well. The Emergin-C (sp?) vitamin C powder also works well, but not nearly as well as Oscilli when you are getting sick. |

This sounds interesting and I thought I might give it a try but just looked it up online and it is duck liver and heart molecules diluted to such an extent that there are no duck liver and heart molecules in the final product http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscillococcinum; also http://www.skepticblog.org/2011/03/03/oscillococcinum/. Am I looking at the right thing? |
LOL. I honestly had no idea of the ingredients! All I can tell you is every time I take this as soon as I feel myself getting sick, I am over it in 1-2 days. Now, normally my colds last at least 2 weeks, and the lingering symptoms go on for 1 month. |

I think Imeeden may be very similar to Viviscal, which I have taken for 15+ years. They both are based on marine protein, and there are some Viviscal studies showing benefits to the skin (though I take it for thinning hair).
Prepare for some small skin breakouts...it does increase the oil production in your skin initially. |
Hi bethany, which one, Imedeen or Viviscal, will cause breakouts? I just started taking Viviscal last week and see no breakouts yet. Thanks in advance. |
I take Viviscal....I take a month off every 6 months (their recommendation) and each time I start back up I have a few breakouts on my face, and one or two on my scalp (which never happens at any other time).

You can get it at a number of places online including iherb.com, and I can usually find a pretty good coupon. I need to order myself, so I will search and let you know who has the best deal right now. |

Anyone here can believe whatever they wish to, but personally I will not take anything that Ray Peat says as fact. So if he is the one being quoted when fish oil is presumed to be a scam, I do take it with a grain of salt. To me, what he says is not fact. Mind you he is an interesting read but that's all I'll say about him.
