If you intend to copy De Lenclos' recipe, some remarks.
1. Spermaceti has been used in cosmetics for a long time. A chemical copy of it has been developed and is still used. It's INCI name is Cetyl Palmitate (which is the main substance in real spermaceti). Replacing it with, OMG, candle wax makes no sense at all.
2. Lard is another key ingredient, particularly because of not just the fatty contents and the binding properties, but also because of its possible estrogen content. Another key function is it's occlusive property. Replacing it with emu oil probably is a good idea (but pretty expensive) even though I don't think it will improve the smell much. Though using emu oil will probably compensate for something if you replace the spermaceti with ughhh candle wax.
3. Rose WATER is another key ingredient, because of the water content - this is a moisturizing recipe. Replacing it with vanilla scent or essential oil makes no sense at all in this formulation. Rose water is also a traditional complexion clearing ingredient.
The juice of onions has been used traditionally to remove age spots etc. All in all quite an elegant recipe, providing you can stand the onion smell. But keep in mind De Lenclos had this made fresh every night, which is why there is no preservative of any kind in it.
Frankly I am a bit shocked that someone gets to 'update' the recipe without even the least idea what the original ingredients were supposed to do. Traditional skin care really wasn't as crude and primitive as you may think, quite a lot of the ingredients are still used today in high end cosmetics (or replaced by similar, but nicer smelling alternatives).
The De Lenclos recipe is featured on my 'fun for summer' activities list. Not that I expect too much of it, but I have looked at the recipe and researched the ingredients because, of course, De Lenclos really speaks to the imagination. On the other hand, the French artist Mistinguett was also reputed to be gorgeous and seductive until a very high age (with the most beautiful legs in the world). There are lots of pictures of Mistinguett (and her legs) and even though she was a beauty she did age (as we all will). |
