Just saw a Dr. OZ show last week and avocados were promoted for their fiber content. So avocados can detox, provide fiber, and beautify the skin....no sense in spending a fortunate on expensive face creams is there? |

I'm officially off avocados for awhile. Each day has been gradually worse and today was miserable. I was stuck in the bathroom for most of it. |

My smoothie is:
Yogurt Whey Green Smoothie
ice, stevia, whey protein powder a BIG handful of spinach and a splash of skim milk, big scoop of greek nonfat yogourt(twice as much protein as regular yogourt) and a big splash of the green machine from Costc. The green machine splash gives it more sweetness since I am trying to wean myself off splenda these days. I read that 4 ounces of spinach a day will reduce wrinkles by 38% in 2 weeks...good reason to drink that smoothie! |

Way to go for Mr. Kassy!!!!Mr. Toby is trying it but not sure if he will convert to one a day...Hey Kassy when people start thinking we are our husband's daughters our fellas may start downing the smoothies by the gallon
Little update here for Green Smoothies....I got a tip form a long time green smoothie friend...she said celery is considered a green and it is good with pears...So I have been having several stalks of celery with pears and then also using it in my Dr. Oz recipe substituting pears for the apples....very good!!!!Another observation is my body is continuing to transform. Face nice and body is toning to a really trim me. I have dropped a size in pants...the waist smaller, hips and thighs smaller as well. Bust still same size(which is usually the first to go )I have never toned up like this before. I have no hunger and haven't been having nagging headaches like I used to have. Cheers to SMOOTHIES(a blueberry smoothies |

Just saw this on another thread and thought it is just one more confirmation for Smoothies

1. Erase dryness and fine lines with GLA. This is a fatty acid (gamma linoleic acid) is found in borage seed oil and evening primrose, and is essential for building soft, healthy, line -free skin. This was stated by Dr Perricone. In Europeon studies, a daily dose of either oil lessened dryness and tightness by 67% in two months, plus improved skin tone, elasticity and texture, and reduced wrinkling for 71% of women.
One would take 1200 mg of the borage oil or 3600 mg of evening primrose daily.
2. Firm lax skin with powdered greens. Adding the supplement to your morning juice can help slow-even reverse- sags and bags by neutralizing acids released by cells that attack the skin's supportive collagen and elastin. This research was done by the University of Maryland.
Each teaspoon of greens gives you the firming, acid neutralizing benefit of several pounds of fresh vegetables. Plus it has hundreds of skin healing vitamins, minerals and antioxidents.
In preliminary studies, a daily serving of the powdered greens improved elasticity and tone in as little as two weeks.
You would take 1tsp daily, such as GNC Maximum Greens Complete or Garden of Life Perfect Food.
Boy these sure sound like it's worth a try. I would probably mix the greens in V-8 Splash or V-8 juice. I may try one of these or both. Can't hurt anything, probably pretty good for us. |

I use the Perfect Food by Garden of Life from time to time in my smoothies. It definitely has a stronger taste to me. I actually prefer it better without, but if it proves to have more benefits for the skin I'm all for it. I guess I'll have to start taking it on a daily basis for awhile and see. |

I don't plan to add any of the powdered greens to my smoothies....the reason I brought this over from another thread is it is proof to me that the greens make a difference in the skin. I think using the actual greens rather than the powder is better. I had prefer to get it from the foods. |

One of the videos by Victor Boutenko actually had him saying to NOT add the green powder to the smoothie. I believe the reasoning had to do with too much combining not allowing the body to adequately recognize and use what is in the whole food/blended green smoothie. |

Ladies ~ you inspire me with your healthful smoothie drinks! I have started back working and have been mainly having yogurt and little fruit in it, plus and dried nuts, yogurt raisins, etc. for lunch.
No other fruits and veggies. Feeling sluggish and my skin seems kind of drab in color because of my poor eating habits the past 2 1/2 weeks. Mainly due to lack of time to prepare and a traveling hubby!! My son and I have eaten frozen mac and cheese and pizza due to lack of time and having to run to his baseball games, practice, track, etc., etc. So I am back on board. I really want to succeed and get back on track with my personal eating habits and goals. I love veggies but don't have a huge appetite and can hardly eat the required amount. This plan would surely be a great way for me to get those in! I am inspired by the skin tightening and flattening hand veins that Toby mentioned ~ that would be great because those really bug me! Also, it is just so healthy! Thanks so much ladies! Thanks Toby for starting this thread! Aprile |

Hi all!
It's starting to be a long post to follow... haven't read it all .
Thanks Toby for starting it!
Just wanted if possible some opinion: Been taking green smoothies for about a month now (basically spinach, blueberries, and then adding some days avocado, pears, lettuce, etc... depending on what I have handy -the spinach and blueberries I have frozen, so use them always and then add whatever is around). Just one a day for the moment.
So, for the last two weeks the dermatitis on my hand has come back and has also appeared on my left foot (never had it there before)... this is the negative side... so, could it just be the way my body is detoxifying???
Another 'negative' feeling that has appeared on the last few days is that for about 1/2 or one hour after taking the smoothie I feel a bit sick... don't understand this. Haven't read any of the books published on the subject, so I don't really know if this may be quite normal.
On the other hand, the positive side, the facial skin seems to be improving greatly and although I'm not eating less I seem to be trimming down... the jeans seem to be slightly slack now and the rear skin seems to be smoother.
I must get a hold of some of the books about green smoothies, but in the meanwhile I would appreciate a bit of info on what to expect about negative effects while desintoxicating the body (my itchy red dermatitis is back for the moment but I just assume it is a side effect and will leave soon, and seeing the facial skin getting really good and trimming down... I do want to go on with this!!)
By the way, thank you all ladies for all! I learn so much from you all! I wish I knew more to be able to share!
Hugs, A. |

Hey ATester--Yes, that sounds probably like detox, with the key being that you have some clear improvements while also some negatives. The negatives should clear up over time and are a result of your body "cleaning house". Increases in skin blemishes or rashes while still having an increase in skin hydration is definitely a common detox experience. But the signs vary dramatically from person to person, depending on a person's life history and what they are detoxing. There are bunch of posts earlier in this thread detailing some of the various signs of detox that people have experienced, in case that's helpful.
Regarding feeling sick after smoothies, it's probably detox. For example, my boyfriend always detoxes after he eats a lot of watermelon. But you might also want to check that you are not allergic to anything in your smoothies, as that is another possibility.

I've made mushroom pretty much the same way and it's soooooooo Yummy... |
I made this this morning for lunch - I just finished it and it's so tasty! And so easy too (I'm not a natural cook!). I did it with fish stock (cos that's what I had) and when I heated it up at work I added a touch of chilli sauce and lots of pepper - very tasty indeed. So, thanks! I can't add a thank you to the post as I don't have ten posts yet.
I only joined EDS recently, and stumbled across this thread last weekend. It sounded interesting, and I thought I'd give it a go. This was slowed down somewhat by my cheap plastic blender breaking before I even tried blending anything!
Anyway, long story - I have CFS, and on Monday I woke up to find myself in a bit of a relapse - fatigue was pretty bad. I dragged myself into work, and bought a new blender in my lunch break. On Tuesday I woke up feeling terrible, and my bf whipped us both up a green smoothie (only a little of spinach just to start). After drinking it I managed to get up and go to work with (almost) a spring in my step!
Okay, I crashed mid afternoon, but still!
I had another one this morning, and brought some to work with me (which I will have in a bit - still full from my yummy mushroom soup). I'm still feeling fatigued, but not nearly as badly as I think I would be without the smoothies. I really do think they are helping to reduce the severity of the fatiguey spell I'm having. I'm definitely a convert, and my bf is very excited about it too.
Next I shall try the broccoli soup for my broccoli fiend of a bf..
Sorry for the long rambling post, I just wanted to thank Claudia for the soup recipes, Toby for starting the thread, and everyone else for having such great recipe ideas and enthusiasm that it lit a fire under me! |

Hey koogie! Oh, I'm so glad you found the green smoothies then! Oh, I know a few people who suffered from really awful chronic conditions (including cancer) and were able to get rid of them by doing an all- or high-raw diet with green smoothies.
And if you're looking for inspiration for this sort of thing, here are three moving stories of people who were "cured", one from CFS and two from Fibromyalgia

Hi, This is a bit off-topic for skin improvements and green smoothies, yet you are the audience who I know would appreciate this.
I wanted to share something with you all. A friend of mine has been going to an alternative therapy specialist (a doctor by training) and he is into chinese herbs, he is a trained acupuncturist, and similar type things. My friend is a just a little overweight and smokes (drinks too).
He put her a diet (Diet as in way of eating vs weight loss as a goal). The diet's premise is eating for your blood type. I had heard of it before but didn't quite know what I thought of it. My friend has lost 13 pounds in a week by just eating what is on the recommended food list. No starvation, etc. She is also doing acupuncture for smoking and feels great.
I researched the diet - I'm an A+ and smoothies are a logical part of what an A blood type should eat. A's are considered best on a semi-vegetarian type eating plan with lots of greens. I have lost weight too without intending or needing too. One of the premises of the diet is that you will get to your proper weight by eating those things that you are supposed to eat and avoiding what you are not. There are tons of free guides and information on theWWW. Just thought I'd bring it to anyones' attention who may be interested in how to incorporate smoothies into a blood type diet. |

Sister Sweets,
I tried that diet and had the most unwelcome results.
The guy, who wrote the book and is considered a guru of Blood Type Diet is practicing in Stamford, CT; so I made an appointment and went to see him. I was prescribed a diet with mostly tofu and I had been quite happy with it for about a month. Then all of a sudden I started lactating even though I was most definitely not pregnant. I went to a breast surgeon, who calmed me down but recommended the mamo. The mamo took about 3 hours - they redid it 3 times (without saying a word to me), then I was taken for Ultrasound examination of the breasts and the radiologist told me - that I have both of my breasts filled with cysts, that they are not cancerous, nor can turn cancerous, but it is something that I never had before ( I had seen him for several years so he had the images to compare).
I asked him if he had ever seen anything like that happening to anyone else - and he said he had indeed seen a couple of cases, when people started eating a lot of tofu.
A rather unfortunate and unwelcome result. Had I known then what I know now - that most of the soybeans are genetically engineered, and as such should not be consumed (unless made by a couple of Japanese companies) I would have never even attempted to try it.
Anyway, to make the long story shorter - I stopped the tofu path, stopped lactating and still have the cysts (working on getting rid of them).
I would also be very vary of the Chinese Herbs (due to high percentage of contamination with mercury and other lovely things).
Just my 2 cents. |

Hi cm5597, thanks so much for getting back to me. I'm on day three of green smoothies (just one at breakfast so far, though I think I'll start having one at lunch also). I'm loving it! Not only are my energy levels much higher, I seem able to cope with problems better also.
For example, this morning I got a tax bill for $2K in my mail, when I was expecting (actually depending on) a $700 refund. Obviously, this was not a happy surprise!
Ordinarily, I would freak out, my day would be off to a terrible start, and I would eventually settle down to work out how to sort things out. Today, while not overjoyed, I cut straight to resolving the problem, without wasting my energy on pointless worry.
Of course, this may be purely because of the extra energy, but I'm still pretty pleased.
Thanks a lot for those links. My sister-in-law's mother has fibro, and is also pretty much morbidly obese. I'll suggest to her that green smoothies might help with the fibro. If she had less pain, she could exercise more.
Thank you again! |

I've actually been surprised by how little weight I've lost since starting smoothies. I lost three pounds fairly quickly, but haven't lost anything since. And my evening smoothie has almost no calories, because I use a tomato, celery, carrots and greens. Plus, I have a major detox at least once a week (will they ever stop??) where I empty out everything in my body - at least that's how it feels. I wouldn't mind losing another three pounds, but I don't think it's going to happen. |

Claudia,
I haven't taken the time to figure the calories. As I said, for my evening smoothie, I use a tomato, greens, celery and carrots. For my morning smoothie, I usually have an apple, an orange, half a banana and greens. Sometimes, I have a peach or nectarine instead of the orange. I generally have a sandwich for lunch. I should say I wasn't a big eater before starting the smoothies so maybe that's the problem. |

I don't know about you but I worry about whether the fruits and greens I've bought from the grocery store have been recalled. I wanted to mention that you can subscribe to recall updates from the FDA at http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/default.htm. They also have recalls on Twitter. |
