They're suppose to "frame" our faces.
How do you ladies keep your eyebrows in top shape?
Do you go have them shaped by a professional? Mine seem to grow quite long and I have to trim them-- only wish my eyelashes would grow at the same rate!
Has anyone tried the French TALIKA brand? It's a gel which has soybean in it and is applied with a mascara wand and is meant to help eyebrows and eyelashes grow longer/ thicker?? What did you think?

Well, I'm pretty terrible to my eyebrows... I tend to overpluck them all the time
I have them waxed at a salon and then for a while I pluck and attempt to keep the shape as they grow out. Then I throw my hands up in the air in frustration and let everything grow out (I hate that stage! I tend to cave in and pluck it all ) and then get a wax again.
Apparently though, there is a difference between eyebrow shaping and eyebrow waxing. When you get an eyebrow wax they tend to just give you a generic 'tidy-up' and not change things too dramatically. Eyebrow shaping is when an eyebrow 'specialist' looks at your face and decides exactly what the best shape for you would be. That's what I read anyway.
Mabsy.
ps. Sharon Lee is the "Aussie Eyebrow Queen", well supposedly anyway. She is very sought after to shape people's eyebrows and apparently a lot of celebrities are her regulars. She's based in Sydney if you want to give it a go. But I think you have to book a month or two in advance and it costs about $50. |

Sorry I forgot to add - yes I have tried Talika Lipocils. Many years ago before it really became available in Australia. I think I found it on the net somewhere. I bought three little tubes. Finished them all and saw no difference myself. |

Hey there! I get my eyebrows waxed/arched and love it---it is sooo relaxing!! :P I love having groomed eyebrows, it really does make the eyes stand out. After literally trying 10 different salons, I have finally found my holy grail esthetician. Her very presence is so calming to me. Never tried the Talika product you're talking about, but I was wondering if anyone has tried the Talika lash extender? They're basically rayon fibers that you apply to your lashes while your mascara is still wet. It's supposd to make your lashes longer and fuller. I've heard mixed reviews about this on MUA. Supposedly if done right, it works well. But I heard it's hard to master and can get pretty messy with fibers falling on your face. Any experiences with this? |

I agree with you Thoughtcrime, it does really make a difference to your face when you keep up the eyebrow grooming-- they really open up your eyes!!! Just to prove my point- I have gone out without makeup (this also means not filling in my brows with powder) and people have asked if I was sick!! :P My brows are light although I have black/ brown hair so now if I don't make up my brows I feel naked when I go out.
I admit I have never had my eyebrows waxed although I would imagine this would give a tidier and smoother finish-- is the wax hot on that area? (I know you have a high pain threshhold!). :P I went and had my eyebrows shaped once professionally (but not by the Aussie Eyebrow queen Sharon-Lee Hamilton!!). The esthetician looks at the general shape of your arch then trims and tweezes them to suit the rest of your features-- say for instance she might shorten the end where the brow tapers out by a fraction, so that your eyes can appear bigger, rounder. She "softened" my look compared to my more favoured thicker natural-looking brows. I once had really thin brows when the "waif" look was in fashion about 5 years ago but I let them grow back as it looks more natural.
I think once you get a shape that you love it's easy to maintain just by keeping them neat with regular plucking at home. My brows can "overgrow" so I have to often trim the overhangs to keep them in shape.
Mabsy, I'm glad that you had the "no result" as well with the Talika Liposil-- I'm glad I checked as I though it was just me- no miraculous effects that stood out on my side either. Always best to get a second oppinion when in doubt! Thank goodness we have a forum for that!
I haven't tried the Talika lash extender Thoughtcrime, although I brought a similar product from Napoleon (Australian makeup brand) called Fast Lash which is made of Polyester fibre, you apply it over mascara while it's still wet and it's suppose to lengthen the lashes. I was a little nervous about the fibres as they flew up when you remove the wand (!) but I was still game to give it a go!! I used it once as some of the fibres fell into my eyes-- not a good experience if you wear contacts. I got given a tube of
Origins "Underwear for Lashes" which is a white creamy primer for lashes which is suppose to build up the volume-- as the name suggests it's applied before mascara, allowed to dry a little before you "dress it". I haven't tried it yet but my friend who bought it for me says it's nice and makes her skinny lashes thicker and longer.

Summertimegirl, I 've actually tried the Origins "Underwear for Lashes" many years ago and remembering liking it a lot.
The Talika lash extender and the Napoleon sound very similar. I heard that you were supposed to tap off the excess fibres so they don't get on the face. I dunno, the whole process just sounds too MESSY and complicated! |

Summertimegirl, BTW no eyebrow waxing is fine, really. Bikini waxing, especially Brazilian can be uncomfortable. But seriously everytime I get my eyebrows waxed, I want to fall asleep! The wax should be warm not hot. If it's too hot it can rip the skin which has actually happened to me quite a few times. But it does heal up in a couple of days and thankfully hasn't left any scars. But since I've been going to the esthetician I go to, I have not been ripped once. I think waxing definitely gives a cleaner, polished, more defined look. |

Damn, I wish I had time to get on the forum this morning and read this post! I just walked by the Napoleon shop a few hours ago and could have got myself the lash extender! I really want this now Didn't even know it existed!
Oh, and btw. Eyebrow waxing for me is not overly dramatic but I'd rather a massage if I wanted to relax :P My eyes do water everytime I have it done. |

Oh yeah, and this is just my rant about guys having perfect eyebrows/lashes My other half has the most perfect eyebrows, seriously! I'm actually jealous 'coz if I had them I would never have to wax! His eyelashes are long too. Not fair! *pouts* |

Yeah same here Mabsy! My guy has luscious brows and gorgeously long AND curly eyelashes too!!! NOT FAIR!!!
I've had my upper lip waxed and that went fine (although the threading method is a hundred times more thorough).... but I just worry that the upper eye lid area is a lot more tender, and Thoughtcrime you aren't enticing me anymore when you described the ripped skin.... that brings water to my eyes! How you relax to the point of falling asleep when you're getting that done is amazing! |

Summertimegirl, to me the threading you describe sounds the most painful! :P oh I wish I didn't mention the ripping! Now I'm making you not want to try waxing, but seriously the results are the best and the hair grows slower and finer. The ripping hasn't happened to anyone else I know, if that helps. Just make sure you're not on retin-A or Renova. BTW, the type and quality of wax used is important. I like the green hard waxes (no muslin strips with yellow wax for me-- that has caused the ripping, and the wax being too hot). The green wax is usually for sensitive skin.

I just had to jump in on this thread cuz it reminded me of my first boyfriend. His eylashes were so thick, people were always asking him if he was wearing eyeliner! I had a hard time hanging on to him though. Those eyes were such a "Chick Magnet"! |

Thoughtcrime!!
Happy New Year !! Ahhh... not to worry, you didn't put me off at all with the ripping, I'm sure it might have felt like it but I can't see waxing being a problem for me. I had the green wax when they did my upper and lower lips and that felt fine, and it smelt nicer than the yellow wax. Thanks for the note on retina-A and Renova, I haven't started using those products yet but I will definitely keep that in mind when it comes to waxing! :P
While we're on the topic of waxing, namely Brazilian-- now is there anything I have to do before I go get one done? eg. trim the hairs to a shorter length? Will the esthetician ask me to "help"?? I am finally plucking the courage to go this summer, I'm a bit sick of having to shave every now and again. Do you also have waxing done on your underarms?
I don't think any salons would be in their right minds to do this, but a friend told me once that one place actually recycled their waxes yUCK!! I think this would be the case with the yellow ones as the green hard wax is usually disposed off once it's used-- apparently the wax was put back into the heating pot and melted down and the hairs strained out!!! So regardless, I am sticking to green wax!!!
Summertimegirl
ps. Alohagirl, I'm sure his lashes will keep afluttering but I bet he's nowhere near as happy as where you are now! |

The estethician should take care of everything for you, and not ask you to help. But to make it easier on them, or if you're a shy violet then you can trim it yourself as short as you can--in the rare case, they don't trim it for you. I think it will be less uncomfortable the shorter it is. That's great that you're taking the plunge, you'll love how smooth and cleaner it is--no more shaving daily either. I used to get these horrible shaving bumps (ingrown hairs). People with darker complexions are prone to them. With waxing, they're a rarity now. Haven't tried my armpits, but would like to. If you do it let me know all the details Good luck! |

Thanks for all the tips Thoughtcrime! I've just got to make a booking at a good place-- I'm thinking of making a "spa" day of it, hair removal, facial and thermo bath. I'll have to make sure I ask for a senior eshetician so it's pain-free as possible. :P
I've got more than a week left to get my skin back to normal before I start work again. I came back with a break out that was concentrated in the corner of my lips down to my chin, I've never had it this bad before and it's driving me nuts as the rest of my face is flawless-- feeling the area it's all raised, scabby and just awful. I used the Daily Microfoliant on it and this seem to aggravate the pimples even more-- I remember Alohagirl mentioning that she looked like she had chicken pox and that's how I looked in that area!
I think it's a case of too much of a good thing, namely seafood over Christmas, we ate prawns almost every day as the whole clan was addicted to garlic and salt & pepper prawns. Alcohol has also completely dehydrated me and I hardly drank water for a week. Also, my monthlies have arrived now so it's all happening!!!:P Hormones, seafood with their iodine content, lack of water....I want my normal skin back! There, I've had my whine for the day! LOL

Good luck summertimegirl with the waxing. Can't wait to hear all the details. As far as your skin, don't stress, it will go back to normal. I think you called out the problem: too much sun, partying, harmones... etc. It will normalize once you go back to your normal routine.
My skin is clear (as far as zits)--for now--, but I am still concerned with blackheads on my nose, enlarged pores in cheek area, some scars that I have no idea where their from (past zits or could they be from past extractions during a facial--is that possible
), and now I'm really concerned because i just got a tiny mole on my face, but it's really black! I can't feel it--it's not raised. But it is so black in color, I thought it was eyeliner or mascara fleck, and tried to scratch it off, and now that area is red!! Anyone have advice about moles? Well there's my rant on my skin! |

Hey Thoughtcrime,
we seem to have very similar skin (maybe being Asian has something to do with it hehe!):P but when you listed your concerns I found myself looking in the mirror and ticking off some of those things as well-- with the exception that you don't have the horrible break out that I have at the moment!
Can I ask are the blackheads on your nose noticeable at all, do you usually get them as you are oilier on that area? I think I have had one or two on my nose but I don't usually get them there. What I do notice is that there are small pores on my nose that look a little oily sometimes. I think cleansing keeps the blackheads away for me.
I have small scars on my face as well, although you would only see them in a certain light. I think mine are either from the chicken pox I got as a child, or from the wear and tear of growing up. If you used to sqeeze zits yourself it could be possible that it could have left a scar-- my mum used to say never squeeze or touch pimples as she warned they will scar badly!! Of course some did but some didn't.... these days, I've found the best way of getting rid of zits is to let them be for as long as possible until they become a hard (my b/f teases me that he has more than two eyes staring at him!!:P), then when I'm cleansing, I use a soft face cloth and gently brush off the head of the zit, it leaves a crater but at least it's clean, all the zit is out, no need for sqeezing and no blood oozing out! I don't ever get extractions during facials-- only because the one time I had it done, not all of the pimple was extracted so it ended up enflamed and flared right up again. Also, there's always the risk of the pimple inverting-- ie. pushed back in instead of out and I've seen first-hand what that did to a friend when she tried it to herself.
I have a small raised mole above one of my eyebrows but I also have the "mole" that you described, in fact quite a few of them-- they aren't raised but are vivid black in colour. I have a few on my cheek and one near my mouth...and I always notice when I get a new one. My mum used to always call them "beauty spots" but I'd would like to know what they are if they are not moles, and are not age spots. I don't think they are anything to worry about though.
You sound like you are having a good-skin run at the moment. I hope mine clears up soon! |

Summertimegirl, You are so lucky not to have blackheads because they are difficult to get rid of. I think the blackheads or pores(how do you differentiate between blackheads and visible pores?) I have are just on my nose and only noticeable when I'm not wearing a stitch of makeup, and go really close to the mirror, but not from a normal distance. They don't feel and look like a strawberry or anything--not that bad yet! :P But I would still like them to go away completely. I regret that I had bad skin care habits growing up. I was always under the false belief that if your skin is oily you didn't have to moisturize! And I was using harsh astringents. I think using good products are important but unfortunately it seems that genetics plays a huge part. I know a few women that have the most perfect skin, and they don't even wash their faces, and they wear makeup!! Not fair! I HAVE to wash mine every night or I will pay a huge price.
As for my scars, I just recently got them in the last 2 years. I'm wondering if they are from facial extractions with a needle, or it could be from picking a zit too, but I rarely do that. Who knows. Their not that noticeable either, there's only a couple surface ones, and I just notice them in certain lights like you said.
And don't you worry grrl, your skin will clear up, just give it time and let the Phytomer work its magick! |

Thoughtcrime and Summertime girl, have you tried putting Decleor Essential Balm on your nose?
I too am not sure what the difference is between a blackhead and an ordinary clogged pore, but the ones on and around my nose were visible, and even though they were easily squeezed out, they would just fill back up again. I don't know why, but Essential Balm on the nose every night made almost all of them disappear! |

Hi Girls,!
I did some digging and I found out that pores are the tiny openings in our skin that allows the oil glands underneath to lubricate and protect the surface of our skin... a blackhead is simply a blocked up pore, or technically, it's a plug of sebum!:P Apparently our pores get bigger during puberty to allow for the increased oil production and shrink as we get older when we produce less oil..... and here's the reason why we get blackheads especially on our noses-- it's because that area has more oil glands per square inch than any other part of our body!!. The reasons we get them is because of lack of water in our system to allow the skin to cleanse itself; excess dead cells blocking the opening of the pore; excess oils being produced by our skin and improper cleansing routine- oil not being removed. The interesting thing was finding out that there is a contraption that removes them called a Blackhead and Pimple Extractor! It is a stainless steel, double-ended tool about the size of a crochet needle with loops or holes on the ends that you are suppose to press over the blackhead or pimple (the smaller loop for the blackhead and the larger one for the pimple) to release the gunk from the pore. I've never seen one before at any salons, and I'm also curious how you would get one around a blackhead in the corners of your nose....m!:P The other thing I read was that blackheads have to be removed, they do not come out on their own-- I have to say I have never removed a blackhead myself, they seem to go away. I guess I have always liked cleansing with a fresh face cloth everytime, it's rough enough to "exfoliate" yet gentle enough for the face.
Thoughtcrime, I agree with you it's never too late to start looking after our skin no matter what our skin care habits were when we were young. These days, products are of such a high quality, they do their job at really turning things around. About the needles you mentioned used in the extraction process-- I think if the aesthetician I went to had that procedure I would have felt a lot better but at the place I went to all they donne are gloves and some tissues... and a lot of pressure that kills!!
Alohagirl, I'm really glad that you're enjoying your Decleor , I've read some good feedback on the Decleor Essential Balm. I'd love to look into it and have a try of this product, it sounds like it's a winner for a lot of people. Thanks for the suggestion!

Wow Summergirl, that was really interesting. Reason # 101 to drink more water! Come to think about it, I think the esthetician does just use gloves and tissue during extractions, but with all that pressure, it FEELS like a needle! What do I know, my eyes are closed the whole time! Can that cause scarring? I have heard that Decleor essential balm is good for blackheads which really surprises me, as it is very waxy and rich. But I haven't tried it because it is not vegan friendly |

Thoughtcrime, I was going to ask you about that-- does your aesthetician actually use a needle to make an opening before extracting the pimple?? ....I guess not.:P I remember a post where someone asked if it was OK to make a hole with a needle but I think this was a home-job. I can't say whether extractions can cause scarring, the concern for me is whether they can get it ALL out.... the times I've been impatient and frustrated with some pimples and squeezed myself, I'm sure I got all of it out but it would just NOT stop bleeding!!! Patience is a virtue and I just wait til they dry up then I literally brush them off!
