hope you guys can help me with this dilema. I know taking a EFA supplement esp. the fish-oil kind is very important to maintaining good health as we get older, but I can't find one that my stomach can tolerate. I have "reflux" and as gross as this sounds I get this fishy burping taste in my throat/mouth :-& So does anyone have a similar prob, and have you found a brand that works? Thanks alot.

I've tried several brands and have not had this problem. I suspect they would probably all have this effect on you given the acid reflux problem, as the fish taste would be stronger after being dissolved in the stomach. I have on occasion had a very slight fish taste after burping, but not so that it was gross or anything.

I'm not sure if there is a fish oil supplement that doesn't taste like fish after it's been dissolved, but maybe someone else out there has found one.

Good Luck!

You could give Evening Primrose Supplements a try. They are high in GLAS and they shouldn't give you any reactions like the fish oil.

Try Fisol made by Nature's Way. They're enteric coated so they dissolve in your intestines, not your stomach. No fishy taste or reflux, and the fish oil is supposed to be better absorbed by your body than if they dissolved in your stomach. They're also about half the size of regular fish oil capsules and very easy to swallow.

Here's some info about them http://www.vitacost.com/NaturesWayFisolFishOil-180Softgels

The two times I tried taking Evening Primrose I ended up with a non-stop sick feeling in my stomach. I ended up taking Black Current Oil instead and had no stomach problems. You may be able to tolerate the Evening Primrose but if you try it and have stomach issurs then the Black Current Oil is another option.

Plain old ground flax seed meal is also a good source of Omega 3 oils.

How about taking some flax seed oil? You can take the pill form or the liquid form (you can mix it in smoothies, salads, etc).

I take a women's multivitamin with EFAs, in addition to evening primrose oil. I chose these 2 supplements after discussing my needs/concerns with my local health food store's manager. It was very helpful! (And no weird aftertaste...I used to take one that tasted like broccoli when I burped, it was so off-putting I had to stop taking it! Yuck. And I actually like broccoli!)

They are called "Life Time: Timed Release Female Nutra Mega Formula Dietary Supplement". Haha, now that's a mouthful.

The timed release is key for me as I am very sensitive to nausea from some vitamin supplements (notably those containing iron). It says to take 2 per day and I take them separately-one in the morning and one in the late afternoon. No nausea, no weird aftertaste.

Where did you buy it? Does that company have a website? I like time released supplements also since our bodies can only absorb so much at one time.

I got them at a local (natural) health store, but I looked online, and they cheaper online! There were a few different websites I found. Unfortunately I couldn't find one that listed all the ingredients (and there are a LOT...too many to type out!)

In addition to the regular vitamins/minerals, they also contain ginseng, golden seal, papaya, watercress, parsely, kelp, alfalfa, rose hips, pantothenic acid, dong quai, lutein...and a number of other goodies.

They do contain 100% of iron and iodine, and I know that affects acne in some people, but I did not notice a difference in that respect with these. I also take a separate evening primrose oil supplement, and as a result, the keratosis pilaris (bumps on arms) I have had since I was a child is Finally clearing up! (I had been putting glycolic lotion on my arms topically-for the KP-and I stopped this to see if the EFAs were really doing anything.) Yes, they definitely are! Now I don't have to rub smelly lotion on my arms.

There are a number of other good supplements out there for women, I just chose these because they were reccomended at the health store (and in my price
range). I do not have a lot of experience with other brands (I used to take Flintstones chewables or Centrum. I also tried the Female Ultra Mega from GNC but it had a terrible aftertaste and gave me nausea.)

I did a Froogle search (http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=lifetime+vitamins+female&btnG=Search&lmode=online&sa=N&start=0) to find some websites that have it, but the first few I tried did not do international shipping (I believe I read you were in Canada?)

From their webpage:

"To Better asist you in finding a location near you, please call us:
(800) 333-6168

Email:
lifetimevitamins@sbcglobal.net"

If you can't find that particular brand, I would really suggest going to a natural health store, and chatting up one of the employees (or preferably a manager) and letting them know what you're looking for, price range, etc. They are usually very knowledgeable, and if it's a good place, they won't be pushing expensive products on you. The store I go to (it's not a national chain store)-the manager has stacks and stacks of books he is constantly looking through on natural healthing, homeopathy, etc.

Hope this helps! If you have additional questions on this, feel free to PM me! Smile

Thanks Olyn. I actually went to a Health Foods Store and picked up a multi-supplement that the sales person (aka my sister's friend) recommended. Smile I picked up Nu Life The Ultimate One Women Active.

Thanks for all your info. Yeah, I am in Canada. We're so limited in terms of products. Sad

Yen,

That's great, I hope they work out for you! Smile Let me know though, I can try to keep my eye out in the future when I buy them online for websites that do international shipping.

I've been taking Omega 3 oils for a few months now but see absolutely no difference in terms of my skin. I took a capsule a day which is 1000mg, is that enough? Also, I'm wondering about the Evening Primrose Oil, heard it's good for hormonal acne? And how much is enough if I'm to take it? Thanks! Smile

I follow Dr. Mercola's site for homeopathic/MD health info. As such, I take 1 tablesoon of fish oil/day. Yes, that's right BUT I use Carlson's (Cod Liver in the winter and Fish in summer) w/lemon flavor and it's easy-peasy

Problem w/supps (and I do take those for other things) is that you don't get enough oil in the normal servings (would take like 14, I think) so I just gulp the bottled stuff.

Now, I have tasted other brands w/out the lemon and they were so bad I almost flung myself on the floor in a fit of freak-out. ;p

Dr. Barry Sears makes a very good one. It comes in capsules or liquid. It was recommecded by Dr. Denese, a dermatologist often on chanel 21 in NY, in case you know of her. I read her book on skin care and that's why I tried it. I use both - keeping the capsules at work in case I forget to take the liquid before I go to work.
