I think I have an iron deficiency..(all the symptoms) and have noticed a huge thinning of my hair and many short hairs...(several inches long) ..its like all the growing ones are there but many of the longer ones have fallen out...has anyone had a similar experience and apart from boosting my iron intake and being more careful with iron rich foods is there any product that actually does work with encouraging hair growth? God I hate doctors though...I was there recently and told him all the syptoms which are typical of iron deficiency and he commented on my stomach medication (antacid) which I take and have taken for a few years now regularly and I have heard this interferes with iron absorption too.... but didnt do anything about it ....

Hi annachan - I too have the same problem...loosing a lot of hair, but didn't know that Iron deficiency could do that - I better start taking my Iron Capsules.....Last year I was diagnosed as Iron deficient, and given some capsules. I took them for a month and stopped cos it upset my stomach. So it would be interesting to hear what everyone has to say!
Hope you get good advice annachen and thanks for the post |

I had a lot of hair loss after having my last child. A product that has worked really well for me is called Triaxon. I purchased mine off of theshoppingchannel in Canada. (they have a 6 month money back guarantee as well I believe). |

Biotin helps hair growth. Apart from iron, zinc and multivitamins also help. |

I have the same trouble.. mine is stress related though. Pregancy and stress are the two major causes of hair loss (that and scalp problems). If the hair is breaking off, that would be another issue as well.
If taking iron, dont take it at the same time as carbohydrates or caffiene as that hinders absorption too. Iron tabs will take 1-2 months to take effect.
Also, if you think your hair loss is due to deficiencies and if your stomach troubles you - especially after eating rice or bread or pasta or .. well, even soy sauce.. then go have a test for gluten intolerance. My cousin discovered quite by accident that she was gluten intolerant ... going on a gluten-free diet cured all her health woes as she was able to get nutrients from her food again, rather than all the nutrients just flushing out of her system.
Shiseido has their Serum Noir range which supposedly prevents hair loss and encourages regrowth and scalp health, maybe give that a go too.

you can get certain iron tabs that say they are gentle on the stomach...I was taking them and take multi-s but had stopped and that was all it took for me to get anemic (how do you spell that)I was also on anti inflammatory tabs that are supposed to be bad for iron absorbtion as well as that I dont eat meat... I guess whatever I was taking (iron) before just wasnt getting into my system at all.....thanks to everyones great ideas.... so helpful! serum noir huh? I live here in japan so I can get my paws on that .... |

On my last visit to my stylist (a sweetheart, but he mangled my hair) he mentioned that several of his clients who were struggling with hair loss saw it stop completely when they gave up shampoo with sulfates. He said it's possible to use it for years with no problem and then just suddenly become allergic and lose hair. This probably has been covered in other threads, but just thought I'd pass it on. I'm now in a quandry- I have thin hair, which Nioxin has helped, but it has sulphates. My hair has stoppped shedding in alarming amounts, but it's still very thin. Does anyone know of a product similar to Nioxin that is sulphate free?

Hi girls, this is a great website all about hair and the many types of hairloss causes.
www.keratin.com
Of special note to women is the effluvium article that talks about the connection between birth control pills and diffuse hairloss.
I am experiencing hairloss currently and believe it is the result of stopping my BCP a couple of months ago. If this is the case, it will right itself when my hormones get balanced.
I also am slightly anemic and from much research find the best absorbed iron is a liquid form by the company Floradix. Maybe you can find it online. I get mine at the local healthfood store.
Also, not eating meat can contribute to hairloss as the protein is needed for hair health. |

i second that. i suffer from hairloss maybe 2 3 times a year.. not sure what causes it though. but whenever my hair starts to fall out to the point where i get freaked out i invest in an expensive shampoo or serum like the one mentioned above thats made for hairloss.. the most recent one i used early this year is one by nuskin called nutriol.. my hairloss stopped at about 2/3 of the bottle |

like wrinkles and sagging werent enough huh!
anyway I started washing my hair in cooler water and rinsing with just cold water for the last few days as I have heard this will slow hair loss ...and so far so good...also changed my hair brush to one that seems nice and kinder to my scalp but stimulates blood flow....
taking my one a day iron .... (been taking it for about 3 weeks now when I lost all energy) and wheatgrass every evening so hopefully that will help too...tiger-tim you said one to 2 months...then I guess I should stick to iron rich foods and a multi that has iron ...I have heard iron supplementation is a tricky thing but I dont think my body absorbs it properly and all the meds I was on did their own damage....anyway wanted to share the cold water rinsing as it seems to have REALLY helped.... |

Anna, one other thing about low iron.. if you are suffering from low iron, then it is best to have a blood test to check on white blood cell count too.
About a year ago, I tested with exceptionally low iron levels, but normal white blood cell count (normally for anemia those would be low too).. the doctor was concerned because that can mean that you have some kind of internal bleeding (anything from hemorrhoids to stomach or bowel cancer). In the end, I took a second blood test a couple weeks later here in Japan (rather than the barage of horrible sounding tests the Australian doctor recommended) and all was normal. The second doctor probably said it was because of heavy menstrual blood loss (which I was having trouble with at the time). |

Wow sounds great, where do you get this stuff from? My hair could really use this at the moment & I've heard good things about Shiseido's hair products too.

I have to pick some up for a member (and myself) this weekend.. I was going to get some last weekend but it was too hot to leave the house. Will report how it goes.
I am using Shiseido Tsubaki (camellia oil) at the moment (just got it last week) and it is very nice too. |

Make sure you're getting enough vitamin b12 and folic acid too. A deficiency in either of these can also lead to anaemia, and therefore hair loss.
cant remember foods rich in folic acid...lettuce I think? But B12 is in meat, fish, and dairy products, and if you'r evegetarian it can be easy to fall behind on the recommended daily amount. |

yikes that doesnt sound too good but if it were one of those I would have seen blood coming out that end.(I do check)..and have hemorrhoids in the past once or twice so know how that goes....I am so annoyed with the docs I have been to....dont suppose you have a brilliant one you love and can recommend? (if you are tokyo based) also have you really noticed a difference with serum noir?
hope you got that today tomorrow is going to be a stinker!!!! |

Serum Noir plan is for Saturday .. PLEASE let it be cool!
I have been to two good clinics in Tokyo. One is the Toranomon 1-chome clinic (obviously in Toranomon ) ... they are pretty good for general practitioning, allergy-related, etc. They also have an ENT clinic, x-ray and pharmacy in the same building. Very convenient.
The other doctor I have been to is in Asakusa-bashi. I would have to dig out the card for name and stuff. He studied in Sydney for a few years (at one of the hospitals) so speaks a bit of English too.
IMO the WORST worst places for treatment in Japan are the hospitals: inadequate treatment from arrogant, indifferent doctors (sorry for the colorful description).... OK, SOME of them are OK, but I have had some very iffy treatments and lax care at some hosptials. |

speaking of fireworks.. we had an awesome view of the sumidagawa ones two weeks ago! The best ones in Japan (that I have been to) are the ones in Nagano at Suwa-ko. They are AWESOME and make everything else pale to insignificance. 30,000 fireworks over 2 hours!
If you ever find a super hero skin doctor (ie skin cancer) here, I would love to know. I had the name of one once and I lost it. |

yeah but there were SO many people and I got caught on a stone staircase sandwiched in and couldnt move forward or back for about 20 min...and came so close to freaking out!
hey I found a hairbrush in my search for a gentle stimulating scalp massage that is supposed to lift your face too (only in japan) it was 2000 yen (about 20 dollars) ..well I will report on its face lifting qualities in a month or so...so funny huh! |

a face lifting hair brush?! where on earth did you find that?
As for suwako, yea, that is pretty scarey getting back out. Both years we had reserved seating down on the lake so had even further to walk. The first year was hilarious.. as we were all stuck for 30min trying to get to the station, but of course the trains could not handle the people so entry was regulated, but the services were a bit too slow.. so then we here an annoucement saying "we have borrrowed an orange train from Tokyo, it is coming soon". I have never laughed so hard. Of course, it was a Chuo Line train they must have brought up from Ootsuki I guess. |
