I was wandering past the Shiseido counter today (as any normal girl does on a sunday afternoon) and stopped to play with their sunscreens.
I was so taken with the "sara sara" effect (um, dryness?.. well, it literally means "smoothness".. but it is hard to describe this Japanese term) of the Anessa Perfect Smooth Sunscreen (SPF50+ PA+++) that I bought it on the spot. I was also impressed that this one did not require any special cleansers to remove and it did not leave a white film on my skin. (this one is the one in the silver colored bottle)
It is not waterproof, but that does not bother me. Mind you at 3150 yen (um, about US$27) for 60ml/2oz it BETTER be good I absolutely despise wearing sunscreen on my face but I know I really need something so when this felt so dry after application I could not help but want to buy some.
My face is having a bit of a spack-attack at the moment, so I will wait a few days and then start using it and do a review!
Anyone here been using this one long term? |

Tiger Tim - Is this photo stable do you know?
Is there somewhere I can get this in the UK?
(there seems to be several called Anessa Perfect Smooth SPF 50 is this it?http://cgi.ebay.com/Shiseido-Anessa-Perfect-Smooth-Sunscreen-SPF50-25ml_W0QQitemZ9517360116QQcategoryZ29619QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting)
Thanks

There's also one that seems the same but is in a white bottle with a silver lid? Just a bit confused as the ones I've found on websites in a silver bottle seem to be waterproof?
(also can a be a complete pain and ask what the ingredients are? Thanks!!!) |

Yep, Lucia that is the one.
Shiseido makes about 3 different series of sunscreen. Anessa had a silver, gold (waterproof, requires special cleanser to remove) and pearly finish (never even tried and it also needs their special cleanser)
The Anessa range also has a baby, town-use and mild (sensitive) product. (also hair and lip suncreen)
You can see a pic of all the products in the line herewww.shiseido.co.jp/products/s0104pdt/pdt00001.asp?top=1&W=&B=&K=&R=1E&S=8&D=0&KEI=&TYPE=&BUI=&C1=&C2=
I dont know about the white with silver lid.. maybe they changed the product packaging and if the ebay listing says "waterproof" then they are possibly wrong. ETA: that could possibly be the TOWN USE SPF30 one in the range. |

Oops, I forgot to post about the other Shiseido suncare line.
They have a line just called "shiseido sun care" that comes in blue bottles (and even more expensive than Anessa)
There is an SPF38 cream, SPF30 cream, SPF16 refreshing spray (there are also SPF 50 cream and lotion, SPF makeup, selftanning). This line has to be removed with the special cleansing oil.
BUT the one I tried on my arm and almost bought too was the Extra Smooth Sun Protection Lotion (SPF34 PA++ 3990 yen / app. US$34). When I put this on I immediately thought.. "eww, too oily, I can't use that on my face" but then 5 min later when I was paying for the Anessa I realized that my hand had become beautifully matt!! So when I now finish the current hoard of sunscreen I have (not to mention the LRP requested from Germany) I willg et some of this to try.
Both sunlines are supposed to be used on face and body the SA said.
Here is a link for the Shiseido suncare linewww.shiseido.co.jp/suncare/
and here is Anessa www.shiseido.co.jp/anessa/
(sorry all in Japanese) |

Lucia, I forgot to answer: I dont even know what photo stable means
I looked atwww.sasa.com and they sell it in the white with silver lid and it is only US$22.50 from them
http://web1.sasa.com/SasaWeb/eng/product/viewProductDetail.jspa?itemno=1057829
SASA is good for shipping $75 and it is free or under that $6 (even international)
I might get mine from there next time to try.
As for ingredients, they are printed in very small font and all in Japanese on my box (VERY hard to get those chemicals into English). On a post some time back these ingredients were posted and on first glance I think that they might be pretty much the same (other than order) that is on my box:

I have been using Anessa sunscreen SPF50+ PA+++ for about 2 years, i'm not sure the difference with the one you bought (Anessa Perfect Smooth Sunscreen SPF50+ PA+++). As you said, it did not leave a white film on my face, quite smooth in texture. Surprise to know that it did not require any special cleansers to remove! I will wear it on my hands too. I think you'll love it. |

I like Anessa and will probably repurchase soon (I'm not liking the LRP Anthelios, or whatever, I bought in Europe...) but I have no idea which one I had before - I think it was called Anessa Neo. Does that still exist? |

No, the Anessa Neo does not seem to be on the market anymore... at least not mentioned in the range on the shiseido site. Here is a pic I found at another shop http://cosme.beauty.yahoo.co.jp/image/pdt/273000/pdt273412.jpg
It is also described as a non-whitening milky lotion that was SPF50+ and PA+++ -- which means it was probably replaced by the silver one I got as it sounds exactly the same.
Actually looking more closely at the Anessa site, there is a HUGE range of products under this name, especially foundations.. tinted sunscreen, foundation creams, sticks, compacts, etc. etc. |

I bought one of the Anessa sunscreens (SPF 50) months before but did not like the tacky feeling it left on my skin (never used on my face). It then sits unused and untouched in my drawer ever since.
Tiger_tim, I'm glad you've found one sunscreen that you like. But, have you ever tried Sofina's sunscreens? I'm currently using Sofina and am absolutely LOVING it! Do you know whether Sofina's are effective or not? |

Have never tried Sofina sorry. Never intended to try Shiseido either... but I still came home with it. |

tigr tim - Thanks for the info'!!:O)
by the way the photostable thing - some traditional sunscreens break down in.....sunlight! The newer ingredients in Europe are supposed to not do this but the pay off to this is that they tend to feel a little more greasy to the feel. Saying that I currently use Avene SPF50+ cream (orange tube) and this is quite nice to use not half as oily feeling as LRP and leaves a good base for makeup (and unlike LRP it doesn't degrade in the presence of minerals). There was a massive thread a while back by BadBird all about sinscreens with loads of info'.
Thanks again!!

Thanks for the link! I will wade through that.
My body rarely sees much sunlight usually just 10min in the morning walking to the station and then another 5 min once I get to work. By the time I come home the sun has virtually gone and I dont leave the office at lunch time.
But lord, in Australia in summer I feel my skin burning just being within 40ft of a sunny area. |

tiger tim - I would love to visit Aus but until they invent SPF 1000 I think I'd have to wear a burka!LOL! (That and the creepy crawlies - not good with creepy crawlies! )
High summer in the UK is bad enough for me....I have to hide away inside as even with a good SPF I just can't cope. I get sunstroke easily and feel ill even if I follow all the advice. Its ironic as I hate winter I get really down and can't wait till spring, then summer comes and it hates me! I don't know I think maybe my internal thermastat is a bit dodgy.
My OH jokes that in winter my skin is see through in summer I'm white - he's right I even get a watch mark to prove it!LOL! |

(sorry all in Japanese) |
tiger_tim I have tried serveral Shiseido skincare products and samples and am not really impressed with Shiseido skincare but the Suncare line is a different story. I really like this stuff! I use the SPF 55 Cream for Faces when I will be in the sun for a while and I love it. It offers great protection and has a nice semi-matte look even on my oily skin. I also use the SPF 42 Liquid Foundation (I rarely wear foundation) and find that this really lasts and keeps my skin matte. I would not rely on the foundation for sun protection though because I apply too light a layer. I also use the cleansing oil which I find very effective at removing all my makeup and the Shiseido sunscreens. I have never tried cleansing oils before other than samples and really like the concept. I would be willing to repurchase the Shiseido one but I have to try several more to see which one I like best.
If you try any of the suncare products I would love to hear how they compare with the Anessa ones! However, I wonder if the Japanese and American versions of the Suncare products are the same, they look the same but the SPFs seem to be a little different.
BTW the American versions of the Shiseido sunscreens are photostable and I believe that the Japanese ones are also. |

Lucia - You have the same problem as me. People think I'm mad when I lurk indoors during the summer, wishing it would rain! Give me spring, autumn and winter any day.
I also get awful migraines and sunstroke during the hot weather. It makes me feel so ill and lethargic that I can hardly summon up the energy to move.
I guess we have whatever's the opposite of that S.A.D. thing! |

I hate the feel of suncreen on my face yet have to put it on when I am outside. I have not found a sunscreen that feel light to me. I also have to wear a wide brim hat. My sisters always laugh at me. They don't use sunscreens or hats yet they don't have any sun damage. I was not sun sensitive before but somehow I became sun sentive. |

I used up 2 bottles of Sofina UV Cut Milk SPF24 already and I really love its texture. It is light, watery and matt. Yet, my mother-in-law doesn't like it because she has sensitive skin. If you can tolerate Japanese product well, I think it is a good choice. |
