I've always had thick hair however i seem to lose a lot of hair a day. When i wash my hair, lots of hair seems to come off. When i brush my hair, lots seem to come out. My bathtub gets clogged up due to my hair. Now i know that its normal to lose strands of hair, but how much is too much to lose during a day? I shed like a dog... how much hair do you normally shed a day?
what could be factors for hair shedding? I'm in my early 20's so I hope im not going bald this early. I do dye my hair but recently i dyed it a semi-permanent dark brown.. i didnt bleach my hair and usually when you bleach hair you experience hair breaking off. yikes i'm getting scared due to the amount of hair i shed off...

BC Girl...lots of things can cause hair loss.. hormonal changes and fluctuations, emotional stress, weight loss. I have had the same thing happen to me several times in my life starting when I was in my 20's, but each time the shedding finally ended and my hair came back to normal. One thing you may want to try is a vitamin supplement made especially for hair, skin, and nails. Someone on the board recommended one found in Walgreens (I think) called Hair. Right now I'm taking Derma-Vits by Now.
I understand how scary it is to lose more hair than usual, but don't panic because it's most likely a temporary thing.

BCgirl, are you actually shedding that much hair or is it breaking off? If it's breaking off it's possible that it's the ammonia in your hair dye or other things you are using and you just need to work on strengthening with vitamins and topicals. If it's actually suddenly falling out in large amounts you should probably see your doctor. It could be stress or hormonal issues or sudden weight loss as saladgirl mentioned; in fact, there are a lot of causes that only a doctor could/should diagnose. But first, you should look at the shafts and determine if it's breakage or hairloss.

Ari

It's "normal" to shed between 50 and 100 strands a day depending on genetics.

don't freak out unless you actually feel like your hair is thinning. I lose an absolutely obscene amount of hair -- just handfuls, and it seems to have gotten worse in the last 2 years (I'm mid 20's)....but I still have the same amount of hair. So I wouldn't panic until you actually notice a difference. Some people just lose more and grow more.

SOme medications cause hair loss; one that comes to mind is some forms of birth control, especially the depo shot. I had a friend who lost it at her hairline, like a balding man!

But, yeah, like someone mentioned-- if it's just breaking off, it's probably due to poor hair health. But if it's falling out at the root... that might be something to address at your next check up.

well im on yasmine birth control pills, i've been on them for quite a while now but now it seems like my hair loss is worse.
My hair is not breaking off at the shaft. It's pretty healthy condition. It may just be a hormonal change

You could read through your prescription info and see if hair loss is one of the side effects of yasmine. Most combo pills don't have that side effect, though.

You know, it could also be the cold weather and heat from the furnace, etc., making your hair brittle. I've experienced a bit of that this year.

BCgirl, I lost a lot of hair when I went off Yasmin to get pregnant. Yasmin actually has an anti-androgenic effect, and should help with hair growth, acne etc. But we all react in different ways, so who knows, you could talk to your doc about another pill.

But all the hair that I had lost grew back with the subsequent pregnancy, and I did not even shed much post partum. When i was losing all that hair, I kept up with my essential oil (4 drops of rosemary, and 4 drops of lavender)treatments to the scalp with the hope of keeping the follicles alive.

Do talk to your doc, and all the best.

There was a period where I was finding enough hair in my bathtub drain to make a hair bun with and I was freaking out. I attributed it to two things: 3-4 weeks of antibiotics I was on a couple of months prior to the hair loss and also around that time, I had some surgery and anesthesia. They don't tell you hair loss could be a side effect from anthesia, but it can. After a couple of months the hair loss stopped.

I am 100% sure that diet and stress play a HUGE part in hair loss (not of the genetic type of course). I have observed countless times now my hair falling out more and more when I get less sleep (which also in my case correlates with really poor diet because it means I'm too busy at work). When I then stop, make a conscious effort to eat well and sleep, I start to revert back to normal hair loss (which is about 5 hairs instead of 20-30 I guess in my case).

I agree.....how have your eating habits been lately? Are you getting enough calories? I actually lost an entire plastic shopping bag full of hair in a week about 6 months ago. I was totally freaking out, as you can imagine Shock

My problem was that I was working about 12-14 hours a day, 6 days a week. Stressed out, and I also was skipping breakfast to sleep in, and wasn't really eating anything at lunc....didn't really get a lunch! I ate a huge meal for dinner, but that didn't cut it. After that job, my hair started to fall out at a normal rate, and I thought back, and realized that I was only getting 900 calories a day! Rolling Eyes The human body needs at least 1200 to 1500 a day to function properly.....1200 being an extreme low!!!

I had a big problem with hair loss when my gyn switched my birth control to the Seasonale pill ... I also developed perioral dermatitis (fancy words for very ugly rash along nasolabial folds -- eech). My joke at the time that the new pills worked by making me so ugly that my husband would never want to have sex with me! Shock

I eventually gave up on the Seasonale and my doctor switched me to Yasmine, and then to Yaz (lower dose).

I am still seeing some hair loss (mostly in the shower), more than before the Seasonale but less than it was at it's worst. (PO dermatitis is long since cleared up and hopefully never to return.)

Fortunately, I have very thick hair, so the hair loss is just aggravating in that it is messy to clean up the stray hairs.

I am thinking about taking MSM to see if this helps, and I also recently started taking flaxseed oil just because the Omega 3's are good for me -- maybe these will help

I have had a lot of success with hair, skin and nails supplements (GNC) and CareKate's Rosemary Hair Growth Accelerator treatment once a week.

I used to shed a lot of hair, too. Every time I washed my hair, tons would fall out. I didn't let the hair go down the drain b/c I was afraid it would clog it up, so whatever hair was stuck on my fingers, I'd pull it off, and paste it on the shower wall to throw away later. I never counted it, and it was always a handful when I collected it for my trash. I have always had thick hair, too, so I was not too concerned. I thought maybe losing hair would make my hair not so thick and fluffy and look more like a human being instead of a bear.

However I started to see one area where I parted my hair looking a bit bald. So I tried to do something about it.

I started to take MSM 4 g a day (taken w/ Vit C per Tangal's recommendation). I also take 3 g of Biotin. I also stopped using SLS shampoo like Pantene Pro V. I added Rosemary and Lavender EO in my shampoo and conditioner.

After 5 weeks of MSM, and doing all of the above, I don't shed so much any more. I only got less than 1/2 a handful of hair lost in the shower now if that. I see no more bald spots. Phew!

However I did read that a normal person loses about 100 hair strands per day (throughout the day - not just while in the shower, which was what I was losing - I never counted but I was sure I was losing that much).

Bkkgirl? How much Vit C are you taking? I take 500 mg/day, cut down from 1000 mg per day, because I read taking more than 500 mg/day can make your hair fall out and mine is as thin as can be already!

I also have hair loss alot, now it's not that much since I do this:
- switched my shampoos, conditioners, put more leave-in conditioner (~$10.00)
- avoid pantene (-$5.00)
- use Nexxus aloe rid to get rid of built up (~$9.00)
- once awhile, I put olive oil with honey onto my hair ~$2.00(?)
- eat nature bounty hair, skin and nail formula
($7.00)
Cheap way of gaining back your hair beauty...priceless

I usually take 500 mg (in tablet form) or 1000 mg of Emergen-C (bought at Trader Joe's) twice a day (when I take MSM). I didn't know Vit C will make you lose hair? Where did you read this from? I have not heard of it before.

All of my sisters and I are called "the beautiful hair family". We all have thick semi wavy hair. I have lost hair periodically after childbirth, very stressful times in my life and after a life threatening illness. I found a supplement that really helped my hair (and my body). It is by Twin lab-daily for woman. Vitacost.com sells it inexpensively, bottle of 120 for 13.80. Will it work for you? I don't know but it was my solution when I was concerned as you are. Good luck.

Thanks for recommending this! I need to order more vitamins from Vitacost, and it will be on my list. I have been looking for a daily multi-vitamin for women. How many do you have to take a day?

I had lost quite some hair once. It was mainly because of a shampoo that I should only use once a week. Unfortunately I wasn't paying attention and used it everyday for a month or so. My poor hair Sad

Once I realized that I stopped using the shampoo and did some research about hair-growing products. I found Nioxin had pretty good reviews. So I started using Nioxin active scalp therapy and it worked! After a couple of weeks, I saw little hair growing out fast and I was happy Razz

You can get Nioxin at salons drug stores or super markets and it may help.
