*warning, rant enclosed*

I go to pick up my phone and this female automated voice says "Hello, you have just won a Caribbean cruise. Simply press 9 to accept."

Yah, if I would have pressed 9, how much in long distance charges would have gone through my account???? And who knows what else!!!

I recall hearing about this type of scam in the news a while back. What ticks me off even more, is I have an unlisted phone number which I pay extra for for 2 years now!!

We get between 4 and 8 telemarketer calls every day. Sooo frustrating. Plus, I sleep late, and they start calling at 8am, so I always have to turn the ringer off when I go to bed. We're moving soon, and I can't wait to get a new #. I feel bad for the person who gets our old number next! Laughing

Thank goodness you knew about those scams and hung up on them. I wonder how many people they can still scam.

I have call display and I won't even answer it if it's a number I'm not familiar with. I figure if it is someone that needs to get in touch with me and it's legit, that they'll leave a voice mail. It's annoying sometimes how you'll see the same 800 number calling days after days and they never give up!!

Make them pay for the call! If the call connects, they have to pay for it. I look at the number, and if it's a telemarketer, I pick up the receiver and then just hang it up. I figure I might as well cost them some money while I'm at it! Bad Grin Bad Grin Bad Grin

I usually just don't answer, either, but sometimes lately I've been picking up and hanging up just so I don't have to hear it ring and ring. Now I'll keep doing it, thanks for the tip!

I'm just recovering from a phone scam. In April, we had trouble with our Internet service. While I was on the phone with a technical support person, he handed me over to a woman who said I could get a free instructional CD and only had to pay for postage. I didn't really need it, but stupidly gave her a credit card number for the mailing fee.

BIG MISTAKE!!!

I've since gotten monthly charges of nearly $90 fromwww.videoprofessor.com and thought it was something my husband had purchased. When he told me he didn't know anything about the charges, I was worried that our account had been hijacked. When I called VP to clear things up and was told we were monthly subscribers, the woman got testy with me when I said I'd been the victim of a scam. In a threatening tone, she said all of their transactions were recorded and could be checked out. I told her to please go ahead -- I'd never even heard the name "Video Professor" during the initial phone call, nor did I ever agree to subscribe to anything.

Our credit card was finally credited with the full amount, but I'm really angry about it, and especially angry with my Internet Service Provider for participating in such a transaction. What a lousy, f&*%#@g thing to do to a loyal customer!

Lesson: BEWARE OF "FREE" OFFERS AND NEVER GIVE ANYONE A CREDIT CARD NUMBER FOR "POSTAGE ONLY".
