Does anyone have any experience of any of the above brands that they'd like to share? I'm thinking of ordering the Proavtiv to try and (finally) get my skin under control. Any opinions greatly appreciated! |

I've been using proactiv for 2 yrs or so maybe more. I first began with the whole 3 step. Then I changed the toner. I found that it was NOT drying on my skin (although many others find it is too drying), however it doesn't do miracles on me, I kept using it because it was the only product that could keep my acne at bay (which means instead of breaking out A LOT I only get a few, but I still broke out frequently). I went off it for a while when I was gettin slightly better (my acne was hormonal so getting better didn't really have THAT much to do with the product since I doubt I was seeing sudden effects only after 2 yrs of usage). Anyways my doctor gave me some spot treatment which was ok at first but made my chin PEEL and red so I got off that to go back to Proactiv. Proactiv helped get my skin back to how it was BEFORE using the topical acne (note that I was NEVER clear and it never made me clear). Now I have stopped Proactiv again and have bought Yonka products to replace it. I've used it for less than a week but I can tell it works well considering the frequency of my breakouts. I know that there is a slight purging effect in the beginning - I don't really get that, maybe one or 2 new breakouts but it has kept me at bay actually BETTER than my proactiv can. I'm hoping that the new breakouts are due to the purging or my sudden change in products and that my face will become much clearer. Also Juvenil works faster than Proactiv when it comes to spot-treating and MUCH more natural + gentle.
In proactiv the only product I still use is the refining mask because I'm at the end of my tube - however I will still use it as an overnight spot treat because the sulfur really brings down my inflammation (whenever I pick or try to extract). It also helps heal acne faster (particularly cysts). I have ordered a new deep cleansing mask, as the proactiv doesn't really "deep clean" regarding your pore but it keeps your acne at bay. I used to use it everyday (no problem with dryness) and it helped keep my breakouts under control better than w/o it. I don't use it anymore as a mask though just because Yonka is doing its job.
PSF's Acne Mud Mask has the same degree of sulfur as Proactiv's refining mask and also as nice botanicals so that would be my alternative, it's also inexpensive. I have also ordered O2 to help heal when I extract, it is supposed to kill bacteria (BP in Proactiv kills bacteria as well),
I also ordered the JB Green Apple mask hoping it will help so you can consider that too, there are lots of reviews here on EDS, you may also wanna check out the blemish clearing serum.
IMHO if I was at EDS sooner I would've stopped Proactiv MUCH sooner so I generally won't suggest you start on it since there are so many other alternatives you can find here. |

Here are the skin care lines that I've tried:
Proactiv-big disappointment, didn't clear up my skin at all, made my skin oilier (I have oily skin)
Murad (tried the kit)-made me break out more
RoC PURIF-AC-helped heal the acne that I had but didn't prevent the new ones
PSF (Papaya Cleanser, Acne Treatment Mud)-made me break out
Juice Beauty (Cleansing Gel, Blemish Serum, Green Apple Peel, Sheer Moisturizer SPF30)
-made my skin smoother but ineffective on the deeper cystic acne
Serious Skin Care-still the only line that control my acne. It didn't work for a while after I went off the pill. I decided to try it again recently and it is working again. Woohoo! |

I used to use Proactiv--- it was a waste of money for me. It never really worked, and all that BP is sooo bad for your skin! The most effective product in the proactiv line is the sulfur mask, but you'd be better off trying PSF's acne mud because it has the same active ingredients but it's cheaper and more natural. For getting your acne under control, I'd recommend trying the PSF acne mud and O2 serum, Dr. Hauschka products (especially the cleansing cream and the toner), Juice beauty products (green apple peel and blemish serum), and Yonka emulsion pure. I think any of these products would be more effective and better for your skin than the proactiv system. |

Thank you all for your replies. I have actually used the Dr.H line before. To be honest I found it all a bit time consuming, especially in the mornings and probably gave up too soon. Maybe I'll have to get up ten minutes earlier in the morning?! I think I may have the Yonka emulsion pure somewhere, have also used the Juvenil before. I guess I'll scrub Proactiv off my list. I've ordered the JB green apple peel and blemish serum and am really looking forward to trying those, looking into serious skincare and also a brand called renee rouleau? Anyone heard of that brand? I'm really starting to get fed up of my skin and really want to try and clear it up. Thanks again for all your advice. |

I waited until I went away to college to try Proactiv because my mom would never but it for me! I used it for two weeks and it made my skin break out like crazy so I stopped. The thing I didn't understand though, is that when you break out, that's just the final phase of something that started up to eight weeks earlier.
Now I'm using Obagi and it did the same thing, but I didn't wuss out this time and now my skin is much better. So whatever you try, give it a good couple months to start working. |

I've also tried ProActive when my skin was breaking out bad a few years back. The only thing I could finish was its mask, it seems to make my skin a bit better the next morning. The 3 steps were too irritating for me, I guess it was the BP in it that made my face itchy , dry and red.
The maricle acne skincare for me is PC's BHA 1%, I started to see improvements in about a week, my face began to clear up and looked brighter. Their cleansers for combo/oily skin are pretty good too. |

I have been using the Proactiv system on and off. I agree, the Sulfur Mask is the best part of the line. The Repairing Lotion is my least favorite...especially in warmer weather. My face pours sweat after applying it. |

I suppose I'm in the minority, but I love Proactiv. I've used it for years and it has kept my skin very clear. I had moderate acne when I started with it, with frequent cysts, and since I started with it, I've not gotten one cyst. I use the 3-piece. I have dry skin, and, yes, the repairing lotion can be drying, but I only use it at night. My skin is even toned and clear, and since Proactiv is the only regimen I have followed consistently, it must by why.
I say it's worth a shot for anyone who has had bad acne and nothing else works. That, and I think it's fairly affordable. You get three pieces for $45. Sometimes one piece can cost you that much! |

Oh please don't turn to Proactive! Something that is so commercialized is bound to fail a majority of the problematic-skin population.
The first thing you should do is go to a doctor or dermatologist. This is the first and most important step in trying to clear up your skin.
I don't use any over the counter stuff. I have a perscription, after going through all that junk being sold on the shelves. I've been acne free for 5 years by using it, and cleansing my face with gentle products almost every day. |

Since I last posted regarding the Sulfur Mask, I went to Whole Foods and bought Dr. H's Cleansing Creme. The guy in the store told me definitely NOT to buy it if I had oily skin. So, I had to ponder for just a moment..."the guy working in the body section or hundreds of ladies who have tried the product??? hmmmmm..". I bought it and tried it when I got home. I've got the 'press' down to a science but the 'rolling' has stumped me. In any case. It feels really good and my face doesnt' feel oily at all after using it. It could be my imagination but I could swear that my pores have decreased in size a tiny bit. It could be very wishful thinking but I'm sticking with it. I've been reading Dr. H's website...quite fascinating. Maybe this is the stuff for me. |

Proactiv destroyed my face! Luckily I only bought the small travel set (to try it out). I know they have a money back guarantee, but I didn't want to deal with it.
The travel pack was perfect as a "try me." But I know there are people out there that would be lost without it. I'm not one of those people.
There is a cheaper version (same exact ingredients) called like "kleer action" or something...
so if it works for someone, they can use the cheaper version of it. |
