Hi everyone, many people question the reasons for acne. I also have this problem, my skin sometimes break out without obvious reason (I have a healthy diet, drink plenty of water, exersise everyday), so I tried to find out what may be the cause. I have read in the article that Vitamine B may be the reason for the skin to break out, so I made an experiment. I cut down on all my supplements for a three weeks, my skin clears out and didn't break out until I took one vitamine B pill. The next day I saw red pimples on my cheeks. I decided to give it another try and stopped taking Vitamine B for another two weeks. Last night I took Vit B supplement...and guess what happened... my skin broke out this morning .
I guess I have enough vitamine B in the food that I consume, so I don't need to overdose myself with additional supplements. Sometimes it is difficult to decide whether you need the supplement or not, and if you are like me suffering from occasional acne try to be carefull with supplements. |

Lara1,
Where did you read this article? If it is online can you provide a link? What B vitamins are we talking about here? Is it a single one or the entire B complex? If it is a single one which one?
Also, it is unlikely for anything to cause pimples overnight. It almost sounds more like an allergic reaction. You could be allergic to something in the particular pills you are using and not to the vitamin B itself! Are the pimples you got small red bumps or are they larger pimples?
I know I have a lot of questions but I am always curious about acne and what causes it or makes it worse! |

Actually I know that vits B help with acne, so I did some research after your post. There is what I found:
Acne / Skin Eruptions: Low Vitamin A, low Vit B2, high/low Vit B5, low Vit B6, low Vit C, low Vit E,
low manganese, low chromium, low magnesium, high lecithin, high choline, high biotin, high Vit B1,
high Vit B15, low zinc, high zinc (high testosterone), high/low iron, high bromine, high iodine, high tin,
high nickel, high simple sugar intake (incl. fructose), high fat / oil intake (incl. omega or fish oils), high
acidophilus intake, high NAC intake, high bovine colostrum intake, low thymus.
(Not all acne-prone individuals are equally sensitive to all of the above, so not everyone will experience
acne or skin eruptions from every item).
Also, this link is interesting:

Lara1, what are the fillers in your vitB? I think, they can be the cause of your reaction as well. |

Hi TheresaL, I read it in one of the on-line versions Polish websites. They don't specify the type of the vitamine B whether it is combination of all of the types or only B12. I also was surprise that vit B could cause the acne (there are so many articles that claim to be the opposite), they said in the article that long term overdose of Vit B could cause acne, and I did took vit. B for a very long time with two or three weeks break and continue to take the supplements, that is why I did this experiment.
I have allergy to many different products, usually my allergic reaction is blisters or hives...this time it doesn't look like allergic reaction...I have red pimples, some bigger than others without any white stuff inside. As soon as I stop taking vit B my skin gets better.
I will go see a dermatologist to make sure what is going on with my skin. I will let you know if the Vit B is the real cause for my reaction. |

Hi jumpingball, I take Jamieson's Vitamine B 100 complex. It also contains: cellulose, dicalcium phosephate, hypromellose, stearic acid. vegetable magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide, polyethylene glycole. I wish I could find vit. B without any fillers. |

Lara1-
It is very possible to have an allergic reaction to vit B. After going to doctors and allergists (and having certain tests done) and by self experimentation (like diet modifications etc) my aunt discovered the culprit of her hives and breakouts: vit B (one type of vit B that I remember her mentioning is Thiamine (sp?)). She also discovered she was allergic to cobalt. Unfortunately, both cobalt and vit B tends to be present in many types of foods and especially supplements.
Anyway, just thought I would mention that. I am thinking your break outs might indeed be an allergic reaction... |

I have been thinking that I might be allergic to vitamin B 12/cobalt too. (Haha, yes I know what you are all thinking, is there anything I'm not allergic to?? I heard that one way this allergy can manifest itself is by severe scaliness of the lips, which I was experiencing. I stopped taking my multi-vitamin (which contained a whopping 4000% RDA or some huge number like that for B12) and my problem improved 90%. I'm going to talk to my allergist about it the next time I see her, but in the meantime I've been trying to get the other B vitamins in small doses without taking a lot of B 12... ) |

This is certainly worrying, it never occured to me it is possible to have an allergic reaction to any of the B Vitamins so thankyou for bringing this to light.
Zinc and Vitamin A supplememnts are effective for clearing acne outbreaks. |
