So I head over to the bathroom today and on the way I'm already making plans on which mask I should use - it was a war between Arbonne Thermal Enzyme Mask and the PSF Pumpkin Peel. I decided that I'm definitely in the mood for the PSF mask and I hadn't used it for a while. I open it up.... to find it decorated with crusty little white growths! Yuck! I thought this was a bit odd because I use a spatula so I don't think it was contaminated but I dug around (I know I know) and there's crusty bits through the whole jar, not just the surface. So, now I'm thinking - is this really mould or has it just crystallised somehow? I thought mould was surface only?
What do you think? I *really* don't want to bin it but I will if it's funky...
Off to do the Arbonne mask for now I guess.
Nite all! |

So funny, hilarious mental image involving magnifying glass and safari hat.
Don't use the product if it's moldy. I'm terrible, too. If something is visually moldy, I'll sometimes smell it, too (as if I need further confirmation)... and have thousands of spores waft into my nostrils. To take root and burst out cordyceps style. |

Cordyceps are extremely good for you! They are used in Chinese Medicine. I wouldn't mind at all if I found some Cordyceps growing in my products!! |

Mabsy, how old was the jar? I have some at home, but I've only had it probably less than a month. I'll have to keep watch for odd growths in it ... ewwwww!!! I like the masque though, although I probably like the Green Apple Peel a little bit better. |

How gross!! I would email them and tell them what happened. I have been keeping my JB Green Apple in the fridge because I have been afraid of that happening to me! |

Ok, my bad. I didn't think that the jar was that old (maybe 5 months) but when Moonstarr asked how old it was I decided to through my emails and see when I bought it. Eeek - exactly ONE year ago. I didn't open it straight away but seeing as it's a natural product I guess it has the right to become a farm for something icky. Such are the problems when you have too many masks that you rotate on a regular basis.
I will buy another one definitely but out of curiosity will ask Darren what the shelf life should be so I can aim to use it up before then.
RMB - Not the image I was hoping to portray but I can see where you're getting that from. Ironically, I always wanted to be an archeologist when I was a kid |

Now using a spatula is essential. I have yet to break into my brand spank'n new Pumpkin Peel. On the another thought I have gone into my Green Apple Peel at least 8 times, no spatula...yikes. |

I keep a number of the products I don't use on a daily basis in my fridge, in an effort to maintain their 'freshness' (masks, peels, etc). I'm not positive about if it alters the effectiveness as I have no basis for comparison, but I never get mold that way! |

Olyn - I do that with my Eminence Organics masks but I don't know why I didn't think of it with the PSF mask. *goes to put the PSF moisturising mask in the fridge* |

thanks for the refrig reminder....I have the pumpkin peel, and the peach one..I already put the DHCC in the refrig, and don't know why I didn't think about these two needing to be cold. What about Epidermx...does anyone think this needs to go in the frig???? Next time I see one of those mini-frigs, I guess I need to buy one for my bathroom! HAHA |

You know - the mini-fridge thing isn't a bad idea. In fact, I have one in my bedroom, near the master bathroom! I remember when I met my SO, he thought I had the fridge in the bedroom for "beer". I told him . . Nope - that's for my beauty stuff!!! He just looked at me weird. Although - I have found a few of his liquid beverages in it on occasion. |

Silly SO, of course fridges were made for important things. I guess your SO considers beer an equivilant to beauty stuff. |

well, beer IS good for the hair!!
Mabsy, with all the masks in your fridge, do you have space for food?!
I also want a mini-fridge to keep stuff at around the 15-18oC mark. You dont want them too cold, just nice and cool. |

Luckily, I tend to eat out most of the time and I have a big fridge
Chrissie - my Epidermx hasn't grown anything yet I think I'd be more concerned about stuff with natural ingredients. |

If you guys really want to get a mini fridge, get one that is designed for continuous use...I got a "Coca Cola" mini fridge and this can only be used for 48 hours before a hour break. I agreed with tiger tim, i don't like my skin care stuff to be too cold...how about a wine cooler with temperature control? |

Never thought of it, but a mini-fridge does seem like a good idea, not just for storing beauty products, but also to protect the things you use to MAKE them from hungry predators (ie. hubby and son....hehe). Take the cucumber I bought to for a mask last week. Drizzled with ranch dressing and gobble gobble. Papaya for a potential enzyme peel - tossed into the fruit salad. Yoghurt? Gone. Honey? Gone. I'm just waiting for one of them to get into the aspirin mask. We need to justify our purchases |
