Are there any eyedrops out there that will help my red eyes that also are safe?
I read a bit about Visine and Blue Collyrium, and they were claimed to worsen the problem over time. Hmmm... doesn't sound good. |

You're right, I should check that.
With Visine drops, I don't actually know if they are harmful over time, just googled it and all sorts of pages came up. I guess chemical products tend to come with a warning anway. |

Thanks for the advice! Have you tried them yourself? How do you find them helping redness?

I've been using Allergan drops for years-- my eye Dr. recommended them to me and they are WONDERFUL! For one thing, they come in a box of single-use containers, so they are not only sterile but also they don't need any preservatives. They come in different levels depending on your need. I use "Refresh Celluvisc" as they are thicker since I'm prone to a lot of dryness and redness, but they also have a lighter version which works well. HTH! |

manslayerliz: That's a great tip! Thank you! I will check if we have something similar in Norway. Or else there is always Ebay. Guess I should consult an eye doctor also. |

I think the ones made from natural tears formula like Murine are pretty safe. |

I have extremely dry eyes & just had eye plugs put in my tear ducts by a retinal specialist to help with the excessive dryness. I can totally relate to your situation because I lived for so long with red irritated eyes. My eyes are still dry, so I do still use drops 3 times a day. The Dr. recommended that I only use the single use vials, ie. refresh & thera tears b/c they do not contain preservatives & are more sterile. He absolutely advised against using the whitening type of eye drops because he said that they will end up doing more damage to my eyes. The ONLY vial eye drops he recommended using was the new Visine Pure Tears. But he still would rather that I use the single use vials because the Visine Pure eyes does not contain oil, which is more moisturizing for the eyes. The Pure Tears is suppose to be more sterile b/c of its dispensing tip, but it is a bit inconvenient to use. Anyway, hope that helps. |

Hey ladies, what about Similasan? I've never used it, but my SO uses it daily for his dry eyes since he wears contacts. He used to just use the solution or something and has since decided that this may be better. Men! . I'm not sure about it being 'healthier' or better for the eyes though. Just a thought. Check it out! |

Ziggy- do you wear contact lenses of any sort? Just curious as to what might be contributing to your red eyes.
I also recommend the single use eye drops b/c they do not contain preservatives and are sterile. Multi-use bottles should be thrown away in at most 3 months and who has the time nor energy to keep track of when you opened a bottle of eye drops? This is why I really like the single use containers. Also, the single use eye drops are awesome to carry around in your purse (or backpack etc). I just keep a few of them in my purse so I always have eye drops if I need them.
I also use "Blink"- a newer eye drop that contains hyaluronic acid (I wish it came in single use containers). I use this for my dry eyes in general to help prevent red eyes but especially when I wear my contacts. I put a drop in the lense before placing it into my eye and it REALLY helps with my dryness issues. I wear my contacts about 50% of the time (and my glasses the rest of the time) b/c my eyes are so dry. At most I can only wear my contacts for 12 hours and HAVE to remove them before I go crazy. I even wear a brand of contacts that are specifically for dry eyes. At least I can still wear contacts (my aunt can't wear them anymore due to her dry eyes). |

I have occular rosacea so at any given time my eyes can be red and swollen. One drop I've found works well for me is 'Refresh Ultra' lubricant eye drops. |

Thank you ladies, all your suggestions are great, I want to try them all. The ones in single packages sound genious! Unfortunately the various brands mentioned are not to be found here, so it's hard for me to experiment like I want. Might try and find stuff online tho.

I do - and have for the last 9 years or so. Maybe that's why. I don't notice any difference when I use glasses over a period of time though. My optician noticed my red eyes, however he didn't say anything in particular (had a cold at that time, which equals red eyes, so it was hard to say anything specific).
I never get comments on my red eyes, it's not scary looking, I am just very aware of it. And I find sparkling bright eyes so beautiful!
I doubt these gentle solutions that are designed for dry eyes or allergies will do much difference, but I will sure try. I don't find dryness or itching to be a general problem and I don't have allergies.
I guess you understand I am afraid to try ClearEyes and similar strong eye whitening drops, as my nightmare is to make the red veins even more visible over time. Plus, I hve really big eyes, so it is even more noticable.
Omg, what if I am turning into a zombie!? |

I use Refresh Tears by Allergan. (Green bottle) I have chronic dry eyes, and this is the only one my eye doc will allow me to use. He told me "it's so mild that you can drink it." Visine and other similar types are ok for "rare" use, but I just stay away from them. |

i have been wearing contact lenses for a long time...and will laptops and eyestrain i used to have very dry, irritated eyes (even when i used no contacts for weeks)
Two years ago an internal medicine doc recommended i take hyaluronic acid supplements (60 mg) and the difference was amazing...my eyes just felt so much more moisturised naturally...
Also, the disposable lenses have a low water content (despite what the ads say) and red eyes are more common as people leave them in for longer without cleaning. I have started wearing high moisture content lenses again from durasoft...they are more expensive and need cleaning but they definitely feel better. I use disposables only when traveling.
Slices of raw potato and cucumber (not together!) are good on the eyes for irritation.
Hope this helps. |

you are right not to want to use redness reducing drop all of the time. Your solution depends on what the root of the problem is. If your eyes are red due to allergies, allergy eyedrops can do wonders and can be taken regularly. If your problem is due to dry eyes, there are some great moisturizing drops that can be taken regularly, as well. As was suggested before, it is best to talk to a professional.

I had a problem with RGP lenses a few years ago while away at school and ever since then I've noticed mt eyes are irritated more easily, even though I wear soft lenses now.
When they're dry I use Refresh for contacts, that's why my eye doctor says he uses and I notice the liquid is thicker than typical rewetting drops.
When they're red, I use Opcon drops; they used to be prescription but you can get them at most stores now. They're allergy drops and they work really well for red eyes. You're not supposed to wear them with contacts but I do anyway if I'm out for the night and haven't had any problems. |

I've used the Refresh drops, but I also like the Thera tears. I feel like they leave my eyes more moisturized. Another thing, if the redness is caused by an allergy Patanol works great! |

I am getting off topic here... but I just wanted to suggest Clear Care contact lens disinfectant and storage solution system(rather than multi-purpose solutions). It's just as easy to use as any other type of contact lens solution out there. This is the best way to clean the lenses and prevent infection. More importantly, I believe it prevents my contacts from getting as cloudy later in the day b/c it gets rid of any residue and proteins. ALSO, it is the best you can use to prevent long term damage to your eye from wearing lenses. I am so sorry that I can' remember what the damage etc is called or describe it very well (I've been using this form of lens cleaner for 10 years now and forget why my opthamologist recommended it in the firt place) but it has to do with something forming on the inside of your eye lid which in the long run makes it difficult or impossible to wear lenses at all. |
