My mother is in her late 40's and has always had fine hair but her hair has started to thin alot during the past few years and she's so distraught about it. She started to use Regaine, but doesn't want to have to continually use it. She's had all the necessary blood tests and so on. I found someone in London for her to see who specialises in using extensions on women with hair loss and alopecia, but it requires so much upkeep, expense and she fears she'll end up having to wear a wig in a few years! I saw on the Lucia site that they also do a serum for your hair. Has anyone tried this? I can't seem to translate the page to view the ingredients list, so i'm not sure if it would be a safe option for her to try. |

Sel, you need to be careful of using extensions or hair pieces on thinning hair - traction alopecia can be caused in people with "normal" hair by use of such things that weigh on the hair follicle. Your Mom might want to wear a wig now (there are really authentic looking one called "lace front" wigs out there) maybe she can apply a hair serum and wear a wig until her hair grows back the way she wants it? She should have her parathyroid glands function tested as well, as hair loss is a symptom.
BTW, how do I find the Lucia site - Google brought up nothing. TIA! |

I can certainly sympathize with your mother. And, as MermaidGirl said, if your mom hasn't had parathyroid tests done, she should do so.
Another thought for women over 35 is the possibility of perimenopause which, depending on the individual, can begin from 5-15 years before actual menopause. Female hormones are very delicately balanced and anything from poor nutrition to stress can throw them off especially when they may possibly already be well into decline. Drier skin and hair loss are often the very first signs of hormone imbalances presaging this decline. If she hasn't had her hormone levels tested, she should do this, as well.
Both of these are easily treatable conditions these days.
Wishing your mom all the best,
Ari |
