Hi
I find I am always putting on lip balm, my lips are never without it and when they are, they feel sore and horrible. Can you get addicted to lip balm and if so, how do you go cold turkey (scuse the pun at Christmas), I'm sure it can't be good for me? |

Absolutely. Actually I'll try to find it there is a Lip Balm addicts web site.
The most popular commercial balms are made to encourage more use. Having a base of petroleum actually dries the lips causing you to continually re-apply.
I was a HUGE ChapStick junkie. This forum showed me the error of my ways and now, well - I make my own, but before that I would only purchase balms that didn't include petroleum products and the '* spam alert *' has been cured. I use balms less frequently as I find I don't need it as often.
Ah, found it!

I've known several people, myself included, who found our lips getting painfully dry and chapped when we apply lip balm consistently. It's as if our lips stopped producing their own moisture. Fortunately, it's possible to wean yourself off of it, and your lips will start taking care of themselves naturally. (Not sure about lips in cold winters though.)
By the way, this can happen to guys and kids too. I feel sorry for my son's 12-year old friend. His lips are always chapped and painful looking. He told me his mom buys jumbo packs of chapstick at Costco because he has to apply it constantly throughout the day. I tried to tell him about the * spam alert * thing, but by this point it's too painful for him to stop. Poor kid. |

I've slowly weaned myself off of lip balm over the course of a month or so. Instead I like to apply HA serum+emu oil that I put on my face in the morning and at night to keep it somewhat moisturized so I don't feel so dry and parched. |

I've been using blistex for years, my lips feel incredibly dry and parched without it. I'd love to use something more natural, but nothing I've tried so far seems to moisturise as much as I need . |

Burt's Bees is very moisturizing. I don't feel like I have to continuously reapply. |

I use the cheapest one Carmex, but it works. However, recently I am addicted to the lip venon. It just last so long, and I like the cinimmon kind of spicy feeling and smell. |

I didn't know that you can get addicted to chapstick. That's crazy! I use Burt's Bees and I don't seem to need to apply it all the time. I really only use it in the winter when it is dry outside. |

I was a TOTAL lip balm junkie. I say "was" since I have recently started the Lips2Kiss system which is supposed to restore your lips and allow them to produce their own moisture once again. I have about 30 different chapsticks and could never go without something on my lips. Time will tell with the L2K system, but I sure am keeping my fingers crossed! |

Try aloe vera gel..the 99% type you get in health food shops...just a little bit in your lips at night..really hydrates them. |

I've noticed since I started using the LipFusion XL, I dont constantly apply lip balm during the day, my lips feel fine without it. It's quite a relief. |

A person isn't normally addicted to a beauty product. You use it a lot, but its not an * spam alert *. The word * spam alert * refers to drugs or alcohol.
When you wear lip balm, lips feel so much smooooother than without and so you're well aware of the dryness WITHOUT lip balm. Use something more emollient such as a beeswax or shea butter based product. |

I think the natural moisture in my lips has dried up though because I've always got some sort of balm or lipstick on them. I tried to go without as long as possible yesterday, didn't wear any to bed and couldn't sleep my lips felt awful! I got up at 2am and put on balm. That sounds addicted to me. |

It definitely is a dependancy. |

It's not just petroleum-based lip balms that are addictive/drying. I think lip balms that have a heavy wax content can also be a problem because they wax just coats your lips and creates a physical barrier that prevents stuff like sunburn/windburn, but this physical barrier also prevents the "good" ingredients from penetrating into the lip tissue to hydrate and moisturize from within. So for me, I avoid both petroleum-based lip products, as well as those with a high wax content.... |

Another recovering addict here! Sarahb, maybe you could try a "good" balm, like one of Candy's or Carekate's to help you break the habit? This worked for me. I'm sitting here with nothing on my lips, and I'm not licking them or chewing on them - no urge to go and apply balm at the moment because my lips feel good. |

My husband developed an inflammation on his lips and his dermatologist told him that he was addicted to lip stuff (he was using Carmax). He was put on an Rx anti-inflammatory in a base of Crisco, of all things. Plus he is under strict orders never to use any kind of commercial lip balm again. |
