Hello,
It is so nice to have a flowers and plants at home, unfortunately, I can't have them because of my allergy to most of them...I saw a nice orchids at Costco store (is it a good place to buy Orchids?). I found a few sites that give different information on Orchids and allergic reaction to those plants. On some sites they say that Orchids are not good for people with allergic reactions, on the other sites it is the opposite...on the other, they say that only contact with leaves can create allergic reaction. I asked my doctor to give me a test on Orchids, but he said they don't have such a test Confused .
I miss having plants at my house ... I have allergies to most of them, so this is my last hope to have a plant at home Pray . Does anyone knows cases when people have allergic reactions to Orchids or their leaves? I don't want to risk and bring this plant to my house before I will know if it is likely or not to have the allergic reaction, because I had allergy to some plant and as a result I had an anaphilactic shock.
Any suggestions will be appreciated Very Happy

Was thinking of asking an orchid expert I know about this for you..
but then I just did a quick google and seems it would be good news.

Not in the US so don't know about costco but over here supermarkets etc are the worst places to get plants. I get them from small nurseries and sometimes online.

I am new to orchids myself and had never heard much about allergies to orchids. After reading your post I did some research and found that some orchids can cause contact dermatitis in some individuals. Who knew? I don't know if the 2 orchids that I have would be culprits but I have never had any bad reactions from contact with them. If you really want to know which orchids might be a problem in this area you would probably need to contact an expert.

When you saw the orchids at Costco were they in bloom? If they were in bloom the pollen from the flowers probably would have caused your allergies to act up.

I bought one of my orchids from Jackson and Perkins and one at the supermarket. IMO supermarket orchids are not that bad for beginners. That way you can give one a try and see how it grows and if you can get it to bloom without spending alot of money. In the future I will be buying my orchids from small online nurseries but I haven't done so yet and couldn't give any recommendations.HTH

Hello,
thank you for your answers Very Happy ! It seems that the only way to know for sure whether I'm allergic to orchids is to buy one, even if it is risky...
I think that I will buy not expensive orchid (from retail store) just to try it out... I found some interesting site where are explanations on how to care and grow orchids. I think you may found it also interesting:

http://www.orchid.org.uk/intro.htm

Here are information on Canadian orchid societies:

I also found information about poisonous plants. I found this info very useful, because it is vacation time and many people spend their vacations outdoors, so I believe you will be surprised how many plants (including home plans) are poisonous.
Here are the sites:

I just buy the silk ones Very Happy . You can sort of bend them around to the way you like them - it's fun. And of course no allergy worries, as long as you remember to dust them Very Happy .

I get them at a local nursery that has some very realistic looking orchids. One day I was complimenting another customer on the one she was buying, and it turned out that she thought it was alive Very Happy . The salesperson at the nursery said many of their customers buy their artificial plants and then ask about the "watering schedule."

I have also bought some orchid bouquets at Whole Foods - by far the least expensive flowers there - and have bought some of the plants at Trader Joe's. The cut flowers last as long as or sometimes even longer than the flowers on the plants, and then you don't have to worry about what to do with the plant. I kept one orchid plant around for years hoping it would bloom again, but it never did.
