I have recently been prescribed an acne prescription topical from my doctor called Isotrexin Gel. It seems as if it contains erythromycin (an antibiotic) and isotretinoin (similar to vitamin A). I have been using this at night (although the instructions do say you can use it twice a day) but that you must use a good sunscreen. I really would appreciate some advice on whether using Dermalogica along with this is a good choice or not. I am currently using in the morning Special Cleansing Gel, Multi-Active Toner and then the new Oil-Free Matt Sunscreen. In the evening Pre-Cleanse, Special Cleaning Gel, Multi-Active Toner and then the prescription topical. Everything seem to be going well (although I am only 2 days into this routine). My main concern, is do you think that the Dermalogica routine might be too active? Do you think I can use Daily Microfoliant or should I not use any other exfoliating. Would appreciate anyones advise and or alternative to this routine. Thank you |

You should be fine if you stick with your Dermalogica routine. However, I strongly advise that you use a strong sunscreen for daily use (spf 30) and try to keep your face covered if you will be in the sun for long periods of time (on the beach, boating, at a festival). I've had very bad burning problems from topical antibiotics, but they are definitely preventable if you are careful. |

Thank you for your reply SnowWhite. I have been very hesitant in using this prescription, but everything I try to keep my skincare routine to the basics, I still keep getting clogged pores that seem to spread. I really do not like the idea of using this prescription, but do not know what else to do. Did you use yours during the day? is that what made you get sunburnt? do you use anything now? Hope you don't mind me asking! would appreciate any more input. Thanks |

Don't feel bad about using a prescription for solving this problem--that is what they are there for! I've said this before on the forum, but I have used just about every acne prescription out there at some point. I'm a big believer in managing your acne with a doctor, some of us just have such bad acne that we have to.
Now to answer your questions:
I use the topical antibiotic in the morning.
I don't think it matters what time of day you use it, it will still make your skin sensitive to the sun because it is absorbed into your system.
I'm still using my topical anti-bac, but I use something called DuAc. I've had wonderful results with it and I think it is the best acne medication I have ever used.
Good luck!! |

Thanks for you reply SnowWhite. It does make me feel so much better. I have also posted a topic regarding using Eve Lom cleanser. Have you ever heard of this. It would mean scrubbing my skin with a muslin cloth. Do you think that might aggrevate my clogged pores. Sorry to bug you with so many questions, but I didn't stop to ask my doctor about skincare (and I don't think he would know anyway). Do you exfoliate as well. Thank you |
