`Rented Flags of Our Fathers on Tuesday, and wished I'd made the effort to catch it while it was in theatres. It would have been a different experience on the big screen, as opposed to my 20" tv!

It wasn't bad, but like all other wartime movies pumped out of Hollywood, predictable. However, it was necessary to see the film before catching it's brother film Letters From Iwo Jima. If a person hasn't seen Flags prior to Letters, certain parts of the story will be lost to the viewer. (Hint: the demise of Iggy.)
Powerful movie, and I preferred it much moreso than Flags. Ken Watanabe was incredible in his role of Gen. Tadamichi Kuribayashi! The character's emotional conflict (honor, duty, friendship) radiated off of the screen. I also loved the characters of Saigo (Kazunari Ninomiya) and Baron Nishi (Tsuyoshi Ihara).

Re: Flags. Parts of the movie, "New York" scenes, were filmed around Toronto. I'd forgotten about this, until I recognized Union Station, the Royal York Hotel, the Drake, and I think I saw some footage in & around U. of T.'s St. George campus! Thumbs up to Canadian actors Adam Beach (Ira Hayes), and Berry Pepper (Mike Strank) too!
P.S. Loved the score which accompanied Letters too! |
