A month ago I had my first facial at a dermatologist. The esthetician extracted my blackheads and so forth but her method was painful and I left with red marks all over my face. So friggin' embarrassing. Looked like I got stung by mosquitoes. Than she put so much lotion that it got on my eyelids and I couldn't see where I was walking. She did a light chemical peel but didn't do a mask, after 1 1/2 weeks the marks went away and my skin looked good. I need another facial but I'm thinking would it be a little better at a spa or should I stick with the dermatologist. The price is the same. The spa that I wanted to try uses Jan Marini (msp?) and Dermalogica products. The dermatologist, I did not have a chance to see. The pro with the dermatologist is that with the facial if I have any huge cystic pimple, they will inject cortisone without extra charge. So I was wondering if I could get any advice or personal experience on which is better.
TIA! |

I don't like going to facialists, etc.
I use Rx products and get treatments like IPL, chemical peels performed by dermatologists.
Anything else I consider a waste of money. (As far as my skin and its problems are concerned.)
I consider the results real, and worth the money.
My personal experience is that spas are all about the presentation and blowing smoke up your !@$ and dermatologists (while some are definitely shady characters) get the job done.
I have fantastic skin and a simple routine. I use Rx products and a normal cleanser. The rest I leave to my dermatologist (or registered nurse under his guidance) for treatments. |

dalguy - thank you for your experience. i did like the light chemical peel she did for me. and getting any cortisone injection if needed at that time with no charge. i just needed the extraction and that's what i got. my face felt so friggin' smooth, unbelievable but now it's congested and bumpy again. Maybe it's the oils that I'm using. stinks that my insurance doesn't cover this so I have to pay cash.
May I ask what kind of RX products you use? The PA prescribed differin and duac gel but i haven't used it and hesitant because i use oils on my skin and not sure how it will react. |

Depends on what you're going for. When I want a relaxing facial I go to a spa. I've only ever been to a medi-spa once. And to be honest I felt very uncomfortable with a few doctors coming in encouraging me to have this procedure done or that procedure done when it wasn;t even solicited. This wasn't some dodgy medi-spa it was the Heber Davis clinic (the doctor wife and husband team that owns Ultraceuticals).
Now when I want a massage I go off to see a remedial therapist as I learn so much more about the body muscles from those that are trained to deal with muscles. |

No one in my family sees a dermatologist, so my facials have been happening for years with my esthetician at a salon. I am very comfortable there. She is in her 60's and has incredible skin. I know much of that can be hereditary, but I trust her, she is very gentle with extractions and effective. So I prefer to continue to go to her rather than going to a medi-spa. Now if she ever retired, I don't know what I would do! |

I prefer facials at a spa. I have never seen any improvement in my skin, but I love the pampering. |

Thank you everyone!
I guess I could try the spa (it's a little spa) and see how their facials are compared to the dermatologist. |

Facials at the spa feel more pampering, but I've switched to an esthetician affiliated with a PS office. She has a stronger % of acids, can do IPL, etc. However, my skin didn't improve after the switch. I've made more much progress with what I've learned here at the EDS forum! |
