I'm wondering if my face has gotten darker due to the sun instead of acne & scarring... I mean I have scarring but it's like my face has blackened?? I am african american who had a peanut butter brown skintone... Now it's really dark looking & it looks old & exhausted... It looks very unyouthful. My scarring isn't bad.... It's that I can't get my skin to get smooth, lighter & clearer looking. I've used alot of products in the past & someone told me...... I need to use a sunscreen because my face gets extra sensitive to the sun when it's exposed to the sun.... So... should I get sunscreen?? I am about to give a link to an old picture of mines but my face still looks like that. It's not very clear but.... my the skin on my arms are lighter than my face..... The skin you see on my arms are my original tone... But after the acne... My face has gotten darker & you can notice the difference in the picture... I want my face to come back to it's original tone... But nothing works... Here's the link....http://profiles.yahoo.com/eastsideboi2003
Oh yeah... am I ugly??? |

Sunscreen is very important. It does not 'help' with acne scarring, but it can go a long way in preventing additional hyperpigmentation of your skin (skin getting darker because of the sun), not to mention helping to keep skin cancer and wrinkles at bay. If you are interested in trying to lighten your acne scars, a regimine of topical vitamin C and something like Skinceuticals Phyto+ or Phyto Corrective will help tremendously. Skinceuticals also has some great sunscreens for daily use. I personally use Shiseido sunscreens, but it is all a matter of personal taste.

I agree. You look just fine, MrMan. Ugly is a state of mind. I am the biggest topical C cheerleader there ever was for hyperpigmentation and just general brightening, clearing of the skin. You must, must, must use sunscreen everyday though! Tanning is a reaction by your skin to UV light to protect itself. More melanin is produced as a protective reaction. I use Coppertone's Endless Summer spf 30 because it goes on so sheer and is basically a matte (but not white) finish. I use C+ Firming Serum (cellularskinrx.com) as my C serum. I like it because it is oil-free, absorbs quickly, leaves no residue behind, and is a stable product. Plus about 1/2 the price of other big name C serums. Anyhow, sounds like you are having success with your current regimen. I wish you continued success with it. |

Ditto, you should invest in some sunblock and a vitamin C serum. It might be a good idea to go for a vit C + AHA serum combined (Skinceuticals makes one). The AHA will help with exfoliation which should help fade the scars faster. The serum's not cheap but it should last you a while. It is VERY important to wear sunblock while you use this though (or any other AHA product).
You could also try Dermalogica Microfoliant. It's a gentle daily enzyme based exfoliator that helps even out the skin and brighten it as well. It's one of the favourite exfoliators among quite a few people on here.

brand is less important than making sure it's broad spectrum, i.e. it blocks UVA and UVB. nowadays most sun screens i come across fit the bill. i wear an spf 45 everyday, but spf 15 is good enough if you work primarily indoors. i just like to over do it. try not to spend too much time out doors. i am male, and have acne scarring too, and wearing sun screens really helps, although dont expect results in days or even weeks. wearing sunscreen is like eating healthy: it's something you have to do everyday and commit to for a life time, regardless of whether you have to wake up 20 minutes earlier, or even if you're only going to be out in the sun for 15 minutes-- just do it all of my guy friends give me a hard time about it, they think it's weird, so you might have to deal with that |

m - your friends might realise in about 10/15 years exactly why sunblock is worth the hassle.
MrMan, I agree with m on the sunblock front. Any brand is good as long as it has broad spectrum protection and is not pore clogging. I use Skinceuticals Ultimate UV Defense SPF30 or moisturisers with SPF15 (again - need to check they have UVA/UVB protection). |

Sun explosure can make your acne worse. The UV rays damages the skin causing pigmentations and freckles. Unfortunately there is no sun screen that improves acne scars at this moment. It's really important to wear a sun screen with at least SPF 15. Any brand will do as long as it won't clog pores. |

Mr Man,
Have you used any products with hydroquinone(hq) in it? Some use it to lighten their skin, which it will do - but then you can hyperpigment and end up being darker than your original color. |
