Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has had their hair "relaxed" in the salon, and if so if you would share your experience, and opinion on doing it. Do you have it re done regularly? How often do you need to do it? How long does it take to do for medium length hair? Do you experience problems with your new growth?

I ask because I have thick semi frizzy/ wave-ish hair. Not straight, Not curly. Just in between, just naturally unruly. I had hair YUKO straightened twice. Great results for the first 6 months. Did it again at 6 months, results were not as great. Outgrowing was terrible. the new growth rebelled, big time. And finally, after a while, even if you wanted to curl your hair for a special evening out, NO WAY. Hair would NOT take a curl. I would love to relax my hair so it would settle down, and so I could still style it if I want, and NOT have the rebelling roots.

I would love to hear others experiences with hair relaxing.

Thanks

Hair relaxing...

My own hair is naturally somewhere between wavy and curly...very coarse and thick but durable. I've had some good experiences with relaxers and some bad ones. The bad being that sometimes the chemicals used were so strong I came away with a few chemical burns on my scalp Shock the good being like what you described from straightening, it was awesome and I loved it, my hair was way easy to straighten. I've been doing it about every 4-6 months for the past few years.
BUT...the bad news is that a good relaxer can be expensive too depending on where you choose to get it done, and the re-growth is similar to a straight perm, but is easily tamed with a good ceramic flat iron. Also, hair can get really dried out if not trimmed and deep conditioned regularly. The treatment, depending on how strong of chemical is used, can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, and only a root touch up is needed, the relaxer is permanent. I recommend the gentler treatment if you don't want to fry your hair, it still works as well. Very Happy
It can hold a slight curl, and that might be what you're looking for, if you can handle the re-growth...personally I've gotten tired of rushing to a salon because I can't stand it anymore, and am opting to grow out my curls again so I can do either/or. Smile
Hope that helped answer some of your questions. Very Happy

I got my hair relaxed a couple times and would never do it again. It damaged my hair a lot and dried out my hair by so much.. Sad

I did a Japanese straight perm, but the chemical used was not Yuko. It was another brand which I don't recall at the moment (not Shiseido). It ruined my hair. Now the ends are so dry and brittle. I can't wait to have my natural hair back, and the flat look just doesn't become me. Smile

Hi, from my experience it seems either shiseido or goldwell is best for straightening and rebonding. Try to avoid Wella! It straightened my hair but made it even drier Sad

I had my hair straightened in last Dec. My hair seems not ruined at all. However I should say the result is not so good as well. Now my hais is a bit curled again like not have straightened.
In fact, I am planning to have it done again cos I had to attend a party tomorrow. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

I also relax my hair.I have very curly hair, but only relax to soften the curls, not to straighten. Relaxing can be great, but it can also be awful. My advice would be go to a RECOMMENDED hair salon, make sure they've dealt with YOUR hair type before, and as bluegreen said, def start off gently!
Goodluck and enjoy!!
Very Happy
