I would recommend John Paul (forgot his last name, but he is famous) he was well known 20 years ago and even better known now. He is a genius with hair. I dunno if he still takes in new clients though. |

I know a lot of Asians go to Chura in downtown, it's pretty well known but I still no get the trend of getting a bunch of Japanese teenagers cutting your hair and charging you an arm and a leg for it. Then there's Zeal (which is the re-named Air salon) and they have one in Aberdeen in Richmond and one in downtown, same sort of deal as Chura. You could try, I've heard countless good things about Chura (however it depends on which stylist you pick, I wouldn't know anyways).
Then there's all those Asian, very nicely designed salons in Richmond, they charge you expensively but I don't see what's so good about it, I haven't seen people come out with haircuts I really liked.
So now I go to this neighbourhood type salon called Gigi on Victoria and 42nd. It has NO aesthetic appeal but Gigi is wonderful and gets my hair right everytime - I actually LIKE my hair now! There's 3 stylists there, a guy and 2 girls, definitely make the appointment with Gigi though, I tried the guy once and well he's better with guy hair even though he spends a lot more time and Gigi does. Gigi is more of the snip and go type but I really like her cuts.
My friend goes to another neighbourhood place in Richmond Blundell and No.2 called Silk Cuts. Another aesthetically un-appealing salon but she has always gotten her cuts there and I find her cuts are very nicely tailored to her face shape, so that seems like a good place to try too. Neither of these are expensive - they're actually dirt cheap so even if you tried and you didn't like it you wouldn't have paid an arm and a leg for it.
I'm Chinese btw, so I'm not sure what type of cuts you're looking for. |

I go to one of the salons sormuimui was talking about, Zeal downtown. I always ask for Taka. He used to work at Air in Richmond but got transferred to Zeal. He recently gave me gorgeous light ash brown highlights along with a superb hair cut. He's very knowledgeable about all things hair, and told me stuff about my own hair that I didn't even know, like how my hairline in the back is low and wouldn't suit certain styles. I have slightly wavy hair that has been relaxed and he could tell how my roots were growing back and had to cut my hair accordingly. He's also very open to listening to your needs, and certainly not one of those hairstylists who impose a certain haircut on you which you will end up hating. The service at Zeal is great and prices are affordable (my cut, color and highlights came up to $150). |

Don't bother with Alpha Omega in Richmond! Stylist supposedly had 20 years color experience but I knew something was not right when she was washing out the colour and said "wow, your hair really takes to the red!" and then proceeded to put more colour on to, I guess, downplay the red. So my hair was treated with colour twice and now I spend $$ on s special conditioner for it to not feel like straw!
Air in Richmond? Is this the Suki spinoff or was that Milk? All these one-name salons are confusing! |
