This is a wonderful compilation, wildflower. I'm thrilled to find a Canadian source for sea kelp bioferment on the list (the Herbarie).
Thanks so much for taking the time to do this for us all -- I could have searched until Kingdom come and never have found these! |

Is Herbarie a Canadian source? I always thought it's the US. |

I was wondering the same thing as I didn't mention it on my list. Maybe she meant she used to get it from Herbarie but now she can find it among the CAD links? |

Yikes -- my mistake! The Herbarie is an American supplier. Guess I was seeing what I wanted to see; apologies for not checking my facts first. |

Darnit! Just noticed a typo in one of the links. Thought I had corrected them all.
Acqua Vita's website should be:
www.acqua-vita.com
Sorry guys - wish there was a way for me to go back and edit now.
EDIT - I've reported it to the mods. Maybe they can correct the link. |

I believe you were referring to my question about Canadian suppliers... I tried searching for some last night, but just became too frustrated, especially because I knew there has to be some out there!
This list is great, my hope for expanding my DIY horizons, while staying in a budget have just been renewed!! |

You are all very welcome. I can tell you that list was compiled over a long period of time. I've been saving links to my "favourites" list for about 5 years and am always removing a few and adding new ones. My hunt for good wholesalers seems unending. I remember I spent 3 whole days just doing a constant thorough search to weed out the bad links I saved and to keep the ones I liked, right before I was about to launch my own practice but then was offerred a new job and my home-based business plans were put on hold. I'm glad all that time spent wasn't put to waste because now I can share all that hard work with all of you! |

I don't think they have anything online for retail but I thought that maybe because they hand harvest the seaweed themselves, they may be able to offer you some other products they don't sell online. Also they have a wholesale end and might have a lot more stuff there too. Just send them an email to enquire. Doesn't hurt to try. |

but I will try to contact them and see what can happen. Thanks. |

I meant to say, I don't think they have anything online in retail regarding what you were looking for. I am aware of both their online retail and wholsesale shops. LOL Grrr - sometimes it's hard to explain properly in posts. But do send them an email. They seem like a great company to work with. And let us all kow how it goes as I'm sure there are others here at EDS that would be interested as well. |

I just got their reply:
Thank you for your interest in Outer Coast Seaweeds products. We have received your request for a “bio-fermented algae” product. At this time, we do not have this type of product. Our products are made from wild, organic seaweed harvested on the outer coast of Vancouver Island. Our complete line of face and body products are created from a dozen different seaweeds, blended with glacial and mountain clays, ocean mud, and essential oils from the indigenous plants of the Canadian wilderness. We do not ferment or “process” the seaweeds.
We invite you, however, to visit our new SeaFlora Wild Organic Seaweed Skincare website atwww.sea-flora.com to see our newly launched all-natural seaweed skincare products. For your interest, a description of the seaweeds used to make these products can be found at http://sea-flora.com/seaweed.php.
Oh well...I already couldn't wait and ordered from SkinActive earlier today

I know what you mean. That's why I started making the list. After paying shipping and duties and other fees, inexpensive items from the US suddenly became VERY expensive. I knew there had to be some good Canadian suppliers so I began my search. Even though a couple of businesses are international with just a base in Canada, most of them are home-grown Canadian companies, which I think is great because I really like to and think it's important to, support small Canadian businesses. |

I might be able to be of some help here ...
Over on http://skininteractive.proboards28.com/ ... there is a huge discussion on sea kelp bioferment. There's also a recipe posted by grammy.
It would seem that despite it's very impressive name ... there really isn't anything "fermenting" with this product. It would seem that it's really nothing more than liquefied sea kelp that's thickened [probably with carbommer] ... with wheat protein, algae and some aloe thrown in for good measure.
The recipe is very long and involved as grammy uses agar agar to thicken in her recipe ... but you could use anything.
As I read the pages and pages of postings on this topic, I came across a few posts from a woman who lives in Montreal who located a reputable supplier of liquefied sea kelp in Canada.
Markey at Garden of Wisdom carries this very same product and it can be found in her "marine" section and is called Jim's Sea Kelp [or something like that] and mentions that it's from Canada.
Now ... this fellow Jim sells this liquefied sea kelp as a natural fertilizer ... which kelp is after all ... but there are no chemicals or preservatives in it. It's very pure and Jim mentioned that his mother adds some to a face cream that she herself makes.
I love the product ... and I've added it to my Pearl Paste ... as well as making a lovely leave-in conditioner/volumizer with it.
What's more ... it's very inexpensive.
The URL is http://www.kelpman.com/.
He can't advertise that it's for hair or for application to the skin ... but he did mention to me that he does sell his liquid sea kelp to cosmetics companies.
At any rate ... since the dictionary doesn't have a definition for "bioferment" ... I really believe that all this fuss is about an idea that was marketed as being something bigger than it really is. The truth is that the only important part of "sea kelp bioferment" is the "sea kelp" ... plain and simple.
So ... hop on over to the skininteractives board ... read up ... let me know if you have trouble finding the recipe as I have a link to it saved somewhere ...
By the way ... my hair loves it!

Hello Mary,
KelpMan sells liquid kelp in bigger quantity? I feel a little uncomfortable to put fertilizer on my face I am still waiting for my SKBio from SAS so I will have to wait to try out Jim's Kelp. Even though it said there is no smell but really? Mary?
Thanks.

Hi Wildcat,
No there is no smell to it. It's green ... but then that's what you would expect from kelp isn't it?
You can purchase anything from 125 ml to a 20 litre pail. I purchased the 500 ml for $14.95.
Bear in mind that kelpman's sea kelp isn't a fertilizer per se ... it's a liquefied sea kelp and one of the logical uses for sea kelp is to help in the garden.
I can recall going fishing when I was a youngster ... my Dad would take me to a lake that was chock full of sunfish ... which people do eat but which we didn't. You need a lot of sunfish and a lot of patience to get a good meal. So ... we would take our "catch" back to our cottage and my 4-year-old self would proudly take the sunfish over to our neighbour ... who used them as fertilizer.
Sea kelp is just a better way to add nutrients to the soil ...
Actually I've been adding a kelp supplement to my dogs' dinners for years. [I have lots of dogs ... 14 at present.] There are a whole lot of micronutrients that are no longer present in our soil because we've been farming our soil for a few centuries. However, these micronutrients are present in sea kelp and sea weed.
The canine supplement that I use has been amazing for my dogs' coats and general health.
The bottom line is that sea kelp is sea kelp ... and as long as you know that there is nothing else mixed into it ... it's just "sea kelp" ... whether you use it in cosmetics or use it in your garden.
I know that there is a mental leap that you have to make ... so be sure to read the stuff over at skininteractives ...
And remember ... Markey at Garden of Wisdom sells the exact same thing ... from the exact same source ... even to using the owner's name with it. I assume they repackage it ... but it's the same stuff ... and right here in Canada!
Like I said ... my hair loves it. I'm not convinced that it adds anything more to my Pearl Paste than it already had ... but it's perhaps too soon to tell.
But ... honest ... there is no smell.
HTH
