I got freaked out yesterday when I noticed that the Jane Iredale line has this ingredient in most of its products. From the (although limited) research I was able to do, it only seems as though some women react to it (i.e. are allergic to it), but I could not find a more serious side effect.

A lot of MMU lines now tote the fact that their products do not include it... Can anyone help me out here? What's the big deal with Bismuth Oxcychloride anyway?

when your whole face erupts in painful cysts after using a product that contains this -- well, i'm sorry, call me vain, but i consider that to be a pretty serious side effect.

a friend had been raving about MMU so she dragged me down to the store and an MUA put BE on me over the TM i was wearing. it was so amazing that i had to get the lot of it. the next day i put it on and by afternoon my face had exploded. we're not talking little pimples that a dab of BP would fix but huge, red underground cysts that took weeks to heal (even with injections) and red marks that took many more months to go away. many of the lovely craters on my face can be attributed to less than a day of bismuth -- a lasting reminder....

my reaction may have been at the extreme end of "allergic" reactions, but still. you get the idea. and although parts of me want to try MMU again, i chicken out every time. i think the experience scarred me outside *and* in.

I'm sorry, la vie en rose, I did not mean to imply that the allergic reactions by those allergic to the ingredient are not serious, etc...

Rather, I've used products with the ingredient before and have not reacted, so is there any additional reason (health or otherwise) why I would want to avoid this ingredient?

Some people die from eating a peanut, but that doesn't mean I can't (I'm obviously not allergic). Is the distinction clearer? Hopes this bring clarity to my question...

to my knowledge, no. the only other reason some people prefer to stay away from it cosmetically is because it can be too shiny (and not in a good, glowy way).

ooh, as to the health aspect, maybe there *is* a reason.... just found this article that says bismuth is kin to arsenic Shock http://ezinearticles.com/?Mineral-Makeup-and-Bismuth-Oxychloride&id=68978

When I first started wearing MMU, I started with JI and I love both the loose and pressed powders. I, too, read about the bismuth issues others have, and I wondered if I should avoid the JI stuff because of the bismuth issues. One poster told me that that there's no sense avoiding bismuth in products unless I knew for sure that it was an issue for *me*, and I would know right off due to itching, irritation, etc. Well, I never had any prob at all with JI foundations not agreeing with my skin -- and it's been over a year. So JI is a keeper for me. Smile

I queried Jane Iredale about the bismuth in their products a while ago. Here's the reply they sent me:

The same exact thing happened to me , huge red painful underground zits, the type I did not usually get, all over my cheeks/jaw area. I blamed it on the Mica, but still not sure exactly what it was - I was using BE and then Everyday Minerals - it happened with both - now use Alima and do not get them. Love Alima!

Count me in. I don't know if I am 'allergic' to it, but within 12 hours, I begin to get painful underground cystic acne. So, I aboid Bismuth Oxychloride like the plague.

As for MMU, I love Aroma Leigh, but NOT their Glissade which breaks me out. Their original is wonderful and acne-free for me.

Aromaleigh is actually the only MMU I've ever tried so far, and funnily enough, the Glissade (silicone-coated minerals) works perfectly for me while their Voile (no silicone) made my skin look like dried up bumpy crepe paper. Ugh.

I've been very curious to try other MMU brands, just because I'm sort of a product junkie and always looking for an "even better" HG ... but I want to avoid bismuth oxychloride and I'm also nervous that most MMU will have the same effect on me as the AL Voile did ~ that it will all be too drying and give me the crepe-paper effect.

On the other hand, samples are cheap so I'm pretty sure I'm going to try out Alima and a few others, just out of curiosity!

Also, I wanted to try the Colorescience Sunforgettable powder sunscreen (carried by EDS) but it's got bismuth in it and that's scared me right off. Are there any other powdered sunscreens available that don't have bismuth? Confused

I'm another one allergic to it. Sad Thank goodness not severe enough to get huge cysts, but I do get small bumps that are aggravating. I want to caution those who are allergic/sensitive to this ingredient, it is in many pressed powders as well as MMU. I found out the hard way and continued to use a pressed powder with BO and couldn't figure out why I was getting little bumps. Now I know why Shock
