I'm always confused to this "May Contain" ingrediants in the products that we are using everyday. Does that mean there's a 50/50% in containing those ingrediants or it's not certain? If somebody knows, pls let me know. Thanks! Smile

Hi Stardustdy,

I wonder if it's like the food companies ... like candy bar manufacturers who make products that contain peanuts ... and just on the off-chance that some "peanut dust" finds its way into a product that shouldn't have it in ... they put "may contain trace of peanuts" or something like that ... to protect themselve? Embarassed Laughing

I don't know, of course ... but it's an interesting question! Laughing

hi,

usually this is placed on the labels of products that have several variations on a particular product, such as with makeup. They have a base formulation and then vary it from product to product or from color to color--that is why most of the products that have this disclaimer say they might contain iron oxides or colors... I think it allows them to save $$$ with packaging, since colors and additives are usually minute. hth!

I think the term should read "may contain a minute amount of..." rather than just "may contain". You're right, Stardusty, it is confusing. I've been lead to believe that the amount of the "may contain" ingredient is negligible. Mary and avalange make good points. I think a product that states "may contain" just means that it is produced in the same area and in the same machines as other products that definitely contain the "may contain" ingredient mentioned.

I don't think they CAN say "a minute" amount amnis, cause sometimes it's a substantial amount.

Avalange's explanation nailed it. There are certain ingredients in a formula that are interchangeable. I know that it's very common for formulators to sub one oil or preservative for another. The reasons can range from current market price to availability or, in some cases, the formula itself. Different fragrances can affect the color of the product, etc.

I don't much like the practice either, but I'd rather they mention it than not.

Yikes- a substantial amount? I had no idea that's what it meant...

I don't like this practice either. I guess it's just something else to be weary of...
