Gym where nudists exercise their rights
March 06, 2007
HETEREN, The Netherlands: The first clothing-free workout session at a Dutch gym went ahead as planned yesterday - and participants and observers said it met expectations.
Around a dozen middle-aged and elderly men braved the glare of an excited media at Fitworld gym in the town of Heteren to fulfil their dream of exercising naked.
"There are things that you like to do, and for a nudist, it just feels better to do them with your clothes off," said Ron van der Putten, who drove for more than an hour to take part in the event, dubbed Nudifit, or Naked Sunday. "You feel more free."
Patrick de Man, owner of Fitworld, said he got the idea in part from two of his regular customers who asked why he had separate dressing-rooms for men and women.
"That was the spark," he said, and he ultimately decided to open the gym on Sundays for nudists. The response was overwhelming, both positive and negative. Some were worried about whether it would be sanitary.
"Unbelievable that you guys came up with this idea," wrote one visitor to the club's website, who said he would be switching gyms. "OK that there are people who want to exercise bare naked, but do it at home and not in a public place."
Mr de Man decided to open the inaugural session to the press after receiving inquiries from as far away as Russia and Australia.
No women attended, though Mr de Man said eight had signed up, out of nearly 100 applicants overall. The cost is E10 ($17) per session, sold in blocks of 10.
"It's always the same - the first ones to shy away are the women. You see that at nudist camps, too," said an elderly man called Henk, who declined to give his last name. He praised the event as "ideal".
"We already had naked swimming ... but a gym, that's unique. It's spectacular."
County councilman Frits Witjes said reactions in Heteren, a town 100km east of Amsterdam with a population of 5100, had been "nuanced", even within the town's religious communities.
"Some people are happier about it than others," he said,

There's a reason clothing is required in these situations - the butt on the guy riding the bike is just one such example! |

It had to be said. I just couldn't help myself.
The thought of touching anything that those sweaty dangly droopy bits have been on. Makes me run for the bucket. |

Now I have that vision in my head. I bet that barstool sold for an absolute fortune. |

ewwwwwwwwww... how to they sterilize the equipment before the 'regular' (i.e., non-nudist folks) come in? I really have nothing against au natural, but in a health club it just seems rather unwise.
If I want to see a bunch of naked, not-so-in-shape middle-aged men, all I have to do is encourage my husband's tendency to streak around the house after his shower. Heck, he does it even when I don't encourage him.
I've been wondering for a while, why do so many men consider that their naked body, in whatever state of fitness (or not) it may be, is something others want to see? I mean just go to any U.S. beach and there're these huge Tony Soprano guys in teeny bathing suits, gut hanging out, and they could care less. We women, if we have a stitch of a tummy or some cellulite only we can see, insist on coverups or do the beach-towel-wrap thingy, and are petrified to wear a bathing suit. & I'm including myself in that category (fear & loathing of the bathing-suit, I mean).
Why is that? any ideas? |
