| Ok ladies, dog lovers, when can I bath miss Laney? Not sure she really needs it but yano I just want to!! |

Hi MelissaMarie,
It really depends upon the breed of dog ... and whether or not the dog has fur or hair.
Dogs with hair [like poodles, schnauzers etc] probably need to be bathed more often ... because they don't shed.
Dogs with fur, particularly hunting dogs, shouldn't be bathed very much as it will disturb the protective oils in their coats.
Big dogs are a pain to bathe. Little dogs can be a pain to bathe as well ... but they are easier to hold onto! 
Seriously, it's a matter of personal preference and the type of coat the pup has. Bottom line, if the dog needs a bath ... he/she needs a bath, regardless of coat or size. If the dog has fleas or has rolled in something disgusting [and they love to roll in things that are disgusting!] ... then a bath is mandatory.
Some people like to bathe their dogs often [like once a week] ... whereas I only bathe my group when they absolutely need it. JRT's have very coarse coats that don't need a lot of bathing. Even when they get muddy ... the mud dries and falls off the coat ... which is why I have a ceramic tile floor ... because dried mud is easier to clean off a ceramic tile floor!
There's also the consideration of where you live. If you lived in S.W. Ontario, Canada ... you wouldn't want to bathe your dog at all because it's so darned cold out right now.
If, however, you live in a warmer climate ... then you're okay. 
Can you bathe your dog too often? Probably ... but depending upon the type of coat it has, it's probably not a really big problem.

Dunno when you can bath her - but you can bathe her about once a month if needed. Be sure to use a gentle puppy formula & be especially sure to rinse her well. She's so little you should be able to get her towel-dried pretty quick.
The sooner you do it the better to get her used to it. |

Oops! You meant "what's the earliest age" ...  and I answered thinking you meant "how often"!
Okay ... I had a senior moment there.
I have bathed pups as young as 7 weeks of age ... generally shortly before they were due to leave for their new homes.
I don't let my pups go before 7 weeks so I've never had to bathe a pup prior to that age.
With small pups ... the important thing is to keep them warm while their coats are drying. Small pups lose body heat faster than a big pup.
However, as long as the pup is older than 7 weeks, there probably isn't a problem with bathing. Just be sure to towel dry the pup well ... and that she is warm until her coat is completely dry.

| Ok thank you thank you ladies, shes now almost ten weeks old, and last thrus she weighed 4lbs, so I will go ahead and bath her but keep in mind to keep her warm, its about 70 here today, so cold out is not a prob. Its just when I told my sister I was going to bath her, she damn near fainted, screaming shes too small......but ummm she needs to get use to a bath, right? |

I have a very small JRT [what we call a James Pocket Terrier] who is just over 5 lbs ... and she's an adult ... expecting puppies this spring. So ... 4 lbs is more than big enough to handle a bath! Good luck!

Thanks!!! Poor Laney won't know what hit her in the morning, grinnnnnnnnnnnnnnns!!! Shes a mini dachshund and will get bigger, its just taking her a bit to grow! |

Huskies don't get baths. Thank god!
The eskie is pretty good about it. He actually likes it in the summertime when I can give him a bath outside. Only problem is that the moment I'm done, he flips over on his back on the grass and wriggles around. Sometimes it turns him pale green for a little while.... |

| Thanks everyone for making feel like I won't kill her with a wee bit of water! She handeled her first bath rather well, if one can call trying with all 4 lbs of her might to climb out of the sink the entire time and all 110 lbs of me trying to keep her in. Shes now curled up sound asleep, just exahusted from her ordeal!!! I am off to the bar, this undid me! |

| Coconut was born on 12/26, and I bought her just when she was about 9 weeks old (2/14). The breeder gave her a bath that same day I bought her. I already gave her another bath. She hated it, but it was easy to bathe her b/c she was so tiny. Drying her was tougher. Just be careful not to get water in her ears. When I bred my labs, I bathed them all when they were about 6 weeks old. |

Sarah - I take Coconut pretty much everywhere with me, but I guess if you mean you travel on a plane, it would be too hard to sneak her in with x-ray and all now. lol I put her in a box covered inside with a towel, and put this box (size of a shoe box) in my huge beach bag. I guess I can always wear my shades to make it look like I'm heading for the beach. hehe The only dead giveaway is the bag is mesh, so anyone can see through it that there's a white fur ball sitting inside. She's very very quiet as long as she sees me near her. Maltese is a very good lap dog as well as an apartment dog. They don't need a lot of room to run around, and they're content to curl up next to you. She's being crate-trained, and now she just loves to sleep in her crate. She holds her pee all night long, too. |

Yes I mean air travel, my house would be filled with pets if we didn't travel a lot. I really miss having a pet.  |

| Funny update: Laney WAS so good about just following me around the kitchen like my little shadow unnnnnnnnnnnnnntil her bath! Now she will not go near the me if I am at the kitchen sink ! |
