| Ladies if you could choose just one, which would it be and why? Im buying my mom a skin care routine for Christmas, but she is a simple soap and water kind of gal, so I dont want to overwhelm her. Plus she wont do it if its too complicated. She's 46 and mostly needs wrinkle help around the eyes, forehead and a bit above her lips. Interested to see what you have to say!! |

| I think I will go for Vit C serum, at least it can be used both day and night, no need to avoid sunshine, and less irritating |

You know what I'm gonna say! Hands down RETIN A! I think C serums offer protection from the sun but I don't think they rejuvenate the skin all that much (just temporarily after application) and I have yet to see any results from CP's (after 9 months of use.)  |

For Retin A she will need a prescription, of course. Unless you want to go with a non-prescription strength retinoid, that means Retin A might be out.
I'd go with Vitamin C serum, because the chances of irritation are least and the payoff in terms of glow and evening out blotchy skintone is quicker. Once you have her convinced that skincare activers really work, the hook is in... |

| Just wanted to mention that she does not need a Rx for Retin A. You can order at alldaychemist, and several other places on line, and they are usually less expensive than in the US. |

| So Retin A and Vitamin C are tied two and two! lol I guess Cp's are out and I'll have to decide between these two. If anyone else would like to put their 2 cents in, I would appreciate it! |

I would go for Vitamin C as well. At least there'll be no peeling, alternating nights, etc. and she'll be less likely to be irritated from it. Although the wait time is a pain in the behind, once she gets used to it, it'll be just fine.
My mom is not into skincare products at all and although she's using some products, she's not into a complicated routine at all. She tried retinol, but was put off by the peeling and irritation, so she gave up. Then, I suggested Vitamin C, but she's too busy to be bothered with the wait time. So, I ended up getting her a whole set of Naturderm's products (Chrysalyx, Naturdermx and Epidermx II) and Avene's cleanser. She now loves the routine and she finds it very simple. Although it hasn't given her any significant results, she's happy to stick with it because at least she knows she's doing something good for her skin. However, for Christmas, I'm planning to get her Valmont Elixir Des Glaciers as a present. According from what bushy says, it can be used around the eyes as well, so it'll make it simple for my mom and she should be able to see more improvements as well.
P.S. My mom is 57. |

Andaman, I have to tell  ,what a sweet thing to do for your mam,......I don't here that much,......you really interested in your mams looks and (most off all) feeling.

A gentle retinol, like PSF's .5 percent, would cause minimal irritation, then she could work up to the stronger retin-A formulas.
P.S. I don't think I could choose between retinol/retin-A (which I just started) and Vit C. They both really help. It's not too complicated either. Apply Vit C in the morning and retinol at night. |

| Please be very careful with even gentle retinol like PSF 0.5%. The first time I used it, after 2 applications, I was left with bleeding blotches on my face. The second time around I was left with really raw skin. |

Yowza! Do you know why you had such a strong reaction? Could it be from product interactions? or a severe allergy? I have really sensitive skin and have to be careful (e.g., I would never use a strong exfoliating product like a pumpkin peel mask and then a retinol product within 6 hours of each other), but I've never had "bleeding blotches"!

I really have no idea! At first, I thought maybe the PSF one was too strong or the formulation just didn't suit my skin. So, I tried DS Laboratories Viterol A and had the same reaction. In the beginning, I thought it was the much anticipated "peeling", but then I started noticing it the blotches were very bumpy (much like rashes) worst on the apples of my cheeks and looked really red. Plus they always stung pretty bad. So, I took a look closely and to my horror, I realized the reason why they were so red was because they were bleeding. However, I was able to use Avene Ystheal a couple of nights a week without much trouble (of course, not the same time as using other retinol). I think I'm just one of those people that can't use retinol. 
I wasn't using any peels or AHA/BHA products at the time either. Actually, I had never really used any until recently. All I was using was Vivier Vitamin C serum, eye cream and a moisturizer.
Please don't get me wrong. I do believe that retinol does work wonders for a LOT of people. I just wanted to warn the OP that it could also cause really bad irritations to some people. AND for a first timer, soap and water kinda person, the side effects (peeling, sensitivity, irritation, alternation, etc.) may put them off using skincare products altogether. Whereas I have yet to hear stories about such bad irritations from using Vit C. |

| Thank you for all the responses girls! My mom definitely would never trust my skin care judgment again if she had any side effects, so I think Im going to go with the Vitamin C. Hopefully she'll see some results and get inspired! |

I will! She is always commenting on how pretty my skin looks or how soft it is, so now I can shower her with compliments as well! (Even though she is already beautiful, of course)  |
