well booze may help for the odd night, but you can't start to depend on it to knock you out.
Valerian tea or tablets work as well.
You really need to identify WHY you can't sleep though my sweet! |

Identity of insomnia - I think they call it chaos. Most of this will resolve itself within the next week or so. However, in the meantime I need some sleep. I've tried all the usual stuff, over-the-counter, natural, prescription. I must admit, this has been an ongoing monster for years. Seems me wee brain likes to wake up in the middle of the night to worry. |

I use melatonin on occasion. Doesn't "knock me out" but eases me into sleep. For those really tough nights, I use tylenol pm or nyquil (the nighttime, sniffling, sneezing knock-your-ass-out medicine)
Have you seen a doctor about this yet? If not, def do so. There may be an underlying reason you are not sleeping, and they could help you out with that.... |

I use Tranquinalol (valerian + some other herbs) and Melatonin.
Both by PRLabs.
You should also avoid any caffeine 4 hours or so before going to sleep, and any strenuous activity.
Wish you a good sleep!
Lucy. |

Yeah I second the melatonin. Go straight to the 3mg. Also agree check w/health care professional. ?Could it be menopause? ?thyroid? ?depression? He/she could help you more than we! But I do sympathize! Fawnie |

Rub Lavender EO on your hand wrists and behind your ears. Also, before going to bed have some valerian root tea. |

I would just try and solve whatever it is that's bothering you...stress and worry is the root of sleeplessness and you can't combat it without your sleep.
Soo...take a good look at your life and maybe do a few clean ups, if necessary Insomnia is by NO means normal (nor is worry) and if you can target what's causing it, you may be able to do so much more good by doing so, instead of just trying to fend off your insomnia for a short period of time. |

Benadryl works for me. |

salli,
Hope you can get some sleep soon I went through a period of waking up at 2am every night. Melatonin (12 mg) and valerian root did nothing for me. Benadryl only knocks me out for 2 hours. My dr gave me some ambien samples and told me to only take it if I have been up for many days.
Now I just take a regular antihistamine before bedtime and no caffeine hours before bedtime. |

mtview, I'm like you are, I go to sleep, it's just staying there long enough. I'll try the antihistamine. |

Benedryl also works for me. In fact, when I was pregnant, it was the only thing the doctor said was safe to take for getting to sleep. |

You must be exhausted! Try "Herbal Sleepwell" tablets by Swiss Natural Sources. They contain:
Valerian Root
Passion Flower
Hops
Lemon Balm Leaves
Linden Flower
Good for occasional use |

I've just been reading a fabulous myth-busting book about the scientific research behind sleep called "Sleepfaring" - so much to say and no time right now, but try this - it's quite novel. Apparantly deeper sleep comes because of the brain overheating. Heat your face with a hair dryer before you go to bed. I'll tell you the theory behind this later if you want. |

I used to use Benadryl, but sometimes I would have a "hangover" from it -- and that was only with one capsule.
Recently I've been using 2 sprays of Bach's Rescue Sleep (available at Whole Foods, etc. -- or online) and it's been great! I am falling asleep well and sleeping soundly all night.
Sometimes just using some lavender hand cream is enough to help me. Caldrea makes a nice one. I've also used different essential oil blends that are made to help with sleep issues. |

I find wine works best for me, especially a good red drunk to soothing music |

Molly, would love to hear more on this as I don't think I've had a decent nights sleep since the 80s Although I'm a bit worried that the hair dryer would dry my skin out?
Valerian often works for me but lately I've been looking into those white noise machines. Has anyone here tried them, got any recommendations? |

Thanks everyone. My biggest problem is staying asleep. Seems my wee brain likes to wake between 3-5 am and just THINK about stuff. Not necessarily worry, just go 100 miles an hour thinking. |

If you've been consuming any alcohol in your day, try stopping. It can initially get you to sleep, but the withdrawal from it during your sleep may be one thing that's waking you up. It's a very common thing. |

I used to have problems with Insomnia too, until I found out that I had low blood sugar.
Now I work on keeping my blood sugar levels stable the whole day. And that has helped a whole lot with the Insomnia. |

Salli, OMG, that is the witching hours or something. When I had relationship problems (thank god, not any more), I would magically wake up at around 2 or 3 am or sometimes 4, and stayed UP. Grrrrrrr I hated that so much. My girlfriend was exactly the same way when she broke up with her bf. She was like, "What's up with the 2 am wakeup time?"
So I seriously think it's that you got a lot on your mind, and it stays in your subconscious mind, so you think about it without realizing it. So you probably just have to figure out what is bothering you and resolve it. Once the issue is gone, then you can peacefully sleep. In the mean time you may have to rely on sleeping pills, but I hate taking anything chemical. Hope you feel better soon. Lots of hugs your way.
