I got someone to do my tax last year, but I didn't turn it in. My question is, can I still turn it in even though it's last year's tax? Thanks.

If you are referring to filing your tax return then, yes, you can still turn it in. You actually have a few years (not sure on the exact # of years) to do this. As long as you have paid your taxes on time, you're fine. The government likes to take your money, not give it back so the longer you wait to "ask" for it back, the better for them.

You can always file late, but you may have to pay a late filing penalty if you owe them money. And if you owe money, then you'll have to pay it plus interest (which is unfortunately pretty high, not the 1% you get from your bank's savings account). If you failed to file altogether, and the IRS found you out, you could go to jail for it. So I'd say do it sooner rather than later. If you don't owe them any money though, you should not have to pay anything but they will still want you to file.

Did you file for extension?

do you owe money or not? If you do, you might have to pay penalty plus the interest plus the money you owe.

If you don't, then, you might be OK. You just lose some money on interest if you have obtained it earlier. You probably won't get penalty ...

If you live in Canada it won't be a problem if they owe you money. My b/f usually files his taxes a year late and since they always owe him, he's never had to pay a penalty.
OTH if you own them money....... Shock

Assuming you're in the US:

I was shocked to discover that a law professor that I know who actually teaches tax law always files late--she says as long as you don't owe money, it really doesn't matter. She always gets a refund (though not a lot) and says that the miniscule amount of interest she loses is balanced by the fact that she can wait a fee weeks and fill out her forms when school is out and she has more time.

Ever since she told me that, I watch the annual TV news items showing folks at post offices at midnight on April 15 and shake my head, wondering how many of these desperately sleep-deprived people are owed money and really don't need to be panicked.

But--and this is really important--you can only do the late-file without penalty if you don't owe any money.
