since JM has started to work it's magic, i've found that black is too harsh for my pale face. for dress-up, it's fine, but for an everyday face it just looks garish. and brown (even if it was supposedly bette davis' secret weapon) is dull. i tried and bought a purple mascara from T LeClerc that just made my green eyes pop. unfortunately, the formula was crap and i had to bin it.
what i'm looking for is a natural looking mascara (think Dr. Hauschka) rather than drag queenish DiorShow. i wear contacts and have trouble with a lot of the fiber-rich formulas. i'm looking for more of a lash definer and enhancer in the purple, plum, aubergine family.

As much as I love my Dr Hauschka in blue, I'd also really like to find a violet or purplish mascara with a natural look. Haven't managed to do so yet, but would love to hear if anyone else has. |

Bourjois Volume Glamour Mascara in Prune Eclat 42 is quite nice, and it washes off nicely (you don't need to tug at your lashes to dissolve it) |

Jane Iredale has some great mascara shades including Wine. http://www.essentialdayspa.com/jane-iredale-purelash-len-p_5176.htm
I've never used the mascara personally but I do use their eyeshadows, liners, and brushes and will soon be incorporating some lipsticks and other makeup as well. I absolutely love the line. Excellent quality, superior ingredients, non irritating and fantastic selection. You can't go wrong. |

Hi La Vie en Rose - You might want to take a look at Cargo and Clarins - both have pretty straight forward shades of deep purple mascara....Blinc has one too - but I think that the shade is a bit odd..not rich enough for me but you might like it.
Good luck!

I second the Jane Iredale mascara recommendation. It's lovely and not at all drag-queeny, very natural looking. I haven't used the wine color, only the black but now I want to run to the shop and buy some wine color! Be sure you get the JI mascara in the gold tube, the one in the blue tube is not as good. |

i got the Bourjois because it was easy (the corner market). while the formula is nice, the colour was quite boring. perhaps you need more than one layer for it to show -- but i prefer the more natural look which means one layer.... lesson learned, try it before i buy.
i imagine the Blinc would work (you can buy it on EDS) because it's tubular -- coats each individual lash. unfortunatesly, it's not my cup of tea as it can flake and irritate the hell out of my contacts. i've also pulled out a lot of lashes removing it and i don't have that many to spare.
so the search continues.... |

I saw the purple mascara in MAC yesterday and looked longingly at it.
I have a feeling I'm past the coloured mascara window, now. ( I'm 47 )
Enjoy your colourful lashes, girls! |

Clinque has a really pretty violet eyeshadow and eyeliner. It is really more of an eggplant color. |

I use Blinc Kiss Me mascara in Purple for exactly the same reason (bringing out my green eyes) and it is perfect. It brings out the green, but you don't notice that it's purple on the lashes.
Obviously, though, Kiss Me is a different type of mascara, so it depends on what you like. I love it because it is absolutely smudge proof, since all regular mascaras, including the super long-lasting waterproof ones all left faint rings under my eyes by midday. It doesn't do anything particularly special, though, like dramatically lengthen or volumize.
As for the complaints about it - I never experience any flaking unless it gets old. I also have never experienced the problem others seem to have with pulling out eyelashes. Perhaps it's just different removal processes. Some people focus on getting every last bit off, and try gently pulling the "spider legs" off their lashes. I just wash my face (with Cetaphil and warm water), and when I dry it with a towel, I lightly rub around the eyes. That gets nearly everything off. A few minutes later, when everything, including your lashes, have dried completely, there are typically a few stray flakes that have now dried, and can simply be brushed off. This may sound complicated, but it's pretty much as simple as can be - far easier than even using eye makeup remover. |

Flirt's Big Flirt Mascara in Violet Vixen. It's a super purple, look for it at Kohl's, but it's $9 on sale.
I just adore it. |

I really hope that EDS will start to carry the Dr. H Volume mascara soon! Also, on the Dr. H site, I didn't see a price -- does anyone know? |

ALMAY makes has a mascara in their "intense i-color" line called "raisin quartz" (a deep aubergine) made specifically to "play up the green" in eyes. It's a subtle color with a natural application- not too watery (thus not giving you spikes), but I do find that I need to tissue off the wand every third use or so because of build-up, nothing that has kept me from repurchasing it a couple of times now.
Aren't you in Paris or outside the States some where?....may not be able to get this there...but maybe someone else with green eyes will like it. |
