My new Maltese puppy got a pretty bad and horrid red tear stain around her eyes. I've tried 8-in-1 brand's Tear Clear, and it doesn't really do anything for her although my bf who used to own a Bichon said to be patient b/c it does take time. Anyway, I saw the following products that are supposed to whiten these red stains quickly:

http://www.angelseyesonline.com/

http://www.eyeenvy.com/

http://www.malteseonly.com/cart/product_details.php?category_id=60&item_id=154 (this one specifically for Maltese, not sure why)

So it seems that there're lots of tear stain remover out there, but before I go out and spend $20 on each of these, I want to check with you guys first if you have tried something that you know to work with great success that maybe I can just pick up at Petsmart or Petco.

Thank you in advance for your help. You have all been so wonderful. Smile

Hi- I'd check with your vet first. One of our labs had excessive drainage from her tear ducts as a puppy, from clogged ducts. The vet instructed me how to massage under the eyes ( sorry, but i don't remember what direction), and it helped clear the ducts. The drainage stopped within a few weeks.

Eye Envy is a very good product. I used it on my white Persian. Breeds with flat faces have a real problem with tear stains Rolling Eyes . Eye Envy was the only product that made a noticable difference on Penny.

Hi, bkkgirl! I've been a Maltese owner for over a decade. What a magical breed they are! Anyway, I've been blessed to not have the tear stain problem, though it sure is common in the breed. About the product on the malteseonly forum...don't. The forum owner only pimps the products of he and his friends. In fact, most everyone has left that forum and migrated to this one: http://www.spoiledmaltese.com/forum/

If you haven't checked it out yet, you really must! Tons of very cool and helpful Maltese owners there. There are numerous topics in the grooming section regarding tear staining. I'd say the forum members are about evenly split in their preference of either angel eyes or angel's glow. It sounds like both products work very very well and receive the top recommendations.

Good luck with your baby, and hope to see you on the other forum!

This won't be very helpful I am afraid, but I have a 22 lb. - surprise - American Eskimo dog - who will turn 3 April Fools Day. His eyes are clear. At about 9 months his eyes started to yellow - and after reading various tips as I lurked on Eskie board, I switched him to bottled water. After a week, all yellow was gone. Certainly the bottled water might have had nothing to do with it, but then again, maybe it did. I would check though with vet about tear duct issue - and also be careful with stuff around your dog's eyes. I think that if the yellow returns, my guy will live with it as I would be nervous using eye products. Hope you get some useful advice on the Maltese forum.

Boracic acid is a common remedy for tear stains in show dogs. In addition to eye envy, there are some who recommend Kojo products and also Crown Royale for stain removal, I'm not sure of the availability of these in USA.

I stumbled on a site and saw some DIY formula that includes boric acid. Is that the same thing?

I've always known it as Boracic acid but just googled them and it appears that Boracic acid and Boric acid are the same thing.

Do you know where I can find boric acid for sale? Is it sold at a health food store?

I'm pretty sure boric acid is available in the first aid section of most drug stores as well as Kroger in my area. How is your puppy doing, by the way? My 20 yr old son's girlfriend has gotten herself a chihuahua puppy (probably not purebreed), and having big dogs for all of my marriage,I'm getting such a kick out of this tiny tiny dog!! Very Happy

Robin, thanks for asking about Coconut. She's a good girl! I have only had one puppy before her that was so well-behaved. His name was Champ, a beautiful most gorgeous British Chocolate Lab with a big old square head. He was my big baby. He followed me everywhere. He never barked and was always so happy. Well he's gone now. I wonder if Coconut is Champ's reincarnate. I miss Champ so much still. I love Labs but they shed so much I can't have them in the house. That's why I go with a Maltese this time since they barely shed. Coconut is still whining when I leave her in the morning, but she is beginning to adjust to her new home. She's truly a joy to have as pet.

When I was got my maltese from a breeder. She fed her puppies sink water, which is really unhealthy, and they all got a lot of tear stains. I did some research on the breed before getting him, and a lot recommended natural spring water, and this really helped a lot. My dog never gotten tear stains ever since. He's a really white maltese, with no tear stains at all. Usually you can tell if a maltese is healthy or not. If he/she produces a lot of tear stains, maybe it's something he/she is eating. Maltese's are highly sensitive.

Lisey, I give Coconut the same filtered water (Reverse Osmosis system) that I drink. However I wonder if I need to change filter. Rolling Eyes Also maybe the color comes from her food? She's getting half Eukaneuba, and half Pro Plan.

If the food has food colorings, she can produce tear stains. Try not to feed her foods that have food colorings and preservatives.

I read the label of Pro Plan. No food color. Not sure about preservatives. I don't have the Eukanueba bag since the breeder gave it to me in a small ziploc bag.

I have been told if a maltese isn't happy, healthy, he/she produces tear stains. Maybe you should try changing the water filter? I read on some website you can add white cider vinegar to the water, too.. Never tried that myself though. Shock

Water
What is your water like? Do you have well water with a high mineral content? Are you using treated city tap water that is likely fluoridated? Water with high mineral content can be a cause of staining on the muzzle and fluoridated water may be the source of an allergy sensitivity causing tear stain. Maltese should be feed purified bottled water to eliminate these possibilities. White cider vinegar also helps control tear stains. One teaspoon added to your dogs drinking water works somewhat like TUMS - it changes the pH of the water though it should be introduced slowly to help convince your dog to drink it.

If I were you, I don't think I would use those tear stain removers.. At first I used it on my maltese, and it made his eyes more watery, and his eye area more yellow, and dry. I trimmed his hair around his eyes every week, and used baby wipes to remove his eye boogars.

I tried the vinegar. She would not go anywhere near her water bowl that day. She'd rather go thirsty! Stubborn dog.
