Watched the movie last night, great performance by leonardo Dicaprio, i really hope he gets the oscar this year. well he may be competing himself with another stellar movie"the departed".
Somehow I felt guilty after watching the movie, thousands of people die everyyear in Africa for the bloody diamonds while i am always bugging my DH to buy me dimonds jewelleries. ![Sad](images/smiles/sad.gif) |

I saw the film over the New Year's break and loved it. DiCaprio's African accent was spot on in my opinion. It was a really great movie with an even better message. I too feel guilty about my love of diamonds sometimes. I have in the past always made a point to ask where my diamonds came from, but as demonstrated in the movie you just can't be sure. Plus most jewellers don't know themselves and will in most cases lie to make a sale. One of the ways for us Canadians to be more assured is to buy certified Canadian diamonds, but then that has a negative impact as well as those mines have a detremental effect to the environment. So I can't really win that one either. A very small percentage of diamonds are used for jewellery so I think the best thing to do is to find an alternative to diamonds for industrial use. This would have the most impact and would help the cause worlwide, humanely and environmentally. |

yes windflower, Birks is very proud of selling clean Canadian Diamonds only but the prices are generally higher than Afrian diamonds. Again, like the movie suggests, those clean and dirty diamonds are mixed and we dont really know where they come from. |

Haven't heard of the movie, will probably be a while before it's out over here in the UK, but what's happening out in Africa then? Why are people dying because of the diamonds? |

There are many North American jewellers both wholesale and retail that sell certified Canadian diamonds. Some don't even advertise this so it's best just to ask. Certified diamonds are the only ones where you can guarantee where they come from and that's why you pay extra, for that extra piece of paper that gives you all the stats. Birks is expensive (and in my opinion, over-priced) because you are paying for the name they have made for themselves as well as better quality diamonds. (They only sell good to very good cuts and the highest colour and clarity as well, where as most jewellers sell lesser quality cuts and mostly I to SI clarites.) That's the price you pay for going retail and having a wide selction in front of you. I always suggest finding a wholesale gemmologist and designer for the best prices. Guess I should have mentioned I once worked as a Diamond Consultant for a brief period in time and once seriously considered becoming a certified gemmologist (I have a passion for geology, minerals, gems and stones) so I know a little more than the average Joe. Anwhoo, although most diamonds are mined in Africa, there are quite a few coming from Brazil and Australia as well as other areas. But these are usually pricier as well. I believe that as consumers, we have the right to know where our stones come from.
All in all, like I said in the earlier post, the best answer would be to find an alternative to industrial use diamonds and to enforce more stringent laws and practices worldwide. It may make diamonds pricier in the long run but I think if we can save millions of lives, it would definitely be worth it. |

I have 2 real diamond rings but all of the others I have bought--fancy antique cuts, custom designs, etc. I have used synthetic stones. sometimes a good moissonite, sometimes "Asha," which are brilliantly cut cz's coated with a hard diamond-like carbon coating and that prevents the scratching that makes other cz's turn cloudy over time. They're great fun, very beautiful and realistic looking, and there's no blood on 'em! ![Very Happy](images/smiles/biggrin.gif) |

I watched this movie last night and LOVED it. I didnt know anything about the vast number of ppl dying because of this diamond business until I saw the movie. I'm a girl, I cant help to like pretty, sparkly jewelery, but after that movie I will never look at a diamond the same. Most north american ppl don't know the price some people have to pay (their lives) for a diamond. Glad this movie came abouts to show this message. I agree it was a great performance by Leo Dicaprio, he has become such a mature young actor. |

I read in the newspaper (after the movie came out) that only 1% of the diamonds are "conflict diamonds". I don't happen to believe that though; I think it is much higher. The diamond market doesn't want it's customers to be too informed. ![Mad](images/smiles/mad.gif) |

Oh, it's so terrible. Maybe I should give up the idea of a diamond ring for my wedding.

I gave up on the idea of a diamond many years ago after reading a Time magazine article about those that mine them. People who work for mines like De Beers. They are treated no better than slaves. It was then that my fiance asked me about rings and I requested my birthstone instead of a diamond. Here in Sweden large diamond rings are not common at engagements but I'd been living in the States for so many years I think that my Swedish fiancé thought that I wanted the typical American diamond engagement ring. I did not. My sapphire ring is very elegant and bought from an ethical dealer who is known here for fair market trade. I do like diamonds but I feel terrible knowing how much people suffer trying to bring others big bucks in profit. I don't want to contribute to that. |

I really think my world would be totally sheltered if I didn't watch movies.
I get so depressed watching the news at night because of the enormous amount of violence.
When there is an actual story line around a crisis where you get personal with the characters, it brings it closer to home and I find myself thinking about situation longer than any brief account on the news.
There really is alot of good to come out of movies, we really must keep watching. (And don't forget the popcorn!!) |

I would quite easily give up wearing diamonds. I feel awful knowing for a piece of jewelry, many people have to suffer. Even diamonds aren't worth the price of someone's arms, legs, or life. |

HAHA~~~I wears my diamonds necklace every moment just because I'm too lazy to get it off. Though I had many necklaces and earings and rings and so on, I just end up with one piece of them. Thinking which one should wear is too much for me. |

I guess it's a lot easier for me as I never like wearing jewelry except for those semi-permanent (body piercing jewelries) ones. An ex-boyfriend wanted to buy me a little diamond necklace before, but I told him I'd rather have something else. |

I'd rather buy something else if I could choose again. I had a lot of earings including several diamond pairs before I find my ears are allergic to all of them. Only pure gold ones won't. What a waste of money |

I was shocked people are still gettting murder over in africa. So many people die from aids, starvation now i hear innocent people are killed over diamonds. Our world needs to work together to rid poventy and corruption. But this may never happen. ![Sad](images/smiles/sad.gif) |

This is one of the best films I've seen in recent years. I watched it whilst I was in Oz, just before I went to South Africa and it really made me think of all the awful things that go on in the world that we don't really hear about. Leonardo was fantastic and his accent was spot on. I'd also reccommend The Departed and The Last King Of Scotland to anyone who wants to watch a good film. |

I love diamonds and colored stones and most everything else. Silver is the metal that looks best on my skin so that's all I have.
Haven't seen the movie other than for trailers but have an idea what it's about. Just an FYI, gold has also been a problem for Africe for decades. |

The movie is well worth seeing. And brings up an important topic that many people don't know about, or choose not to think about. (Though I thought the romance/female character was really silly.) The movie also mentions that "certified" diamonds with that label, can't be trusted. Too easy to lie.
I'd never buy a diamond. Or wear one. I must say I don't get people who put their interest in something sparkly above people getting killed. For that.
I guess everything comes at a price. But this seems so (sorry) clear cut... |
