My boyfriend and I want to go to China to play with pandas at the end of the year, so we started looking in to it.
We came across this Panda Reserve web site:
http://www.chinagiantpanda.com/about/normaltour/faq.htm
Wolong is apparently the biggest panda reserve in China. In addition to the tour fee, if you want your picture taken with a panda, it costs $70 U.S. If you want to play with the Panda for 3-5 minutes, be prepared to shell out $140 to $250 U.S. And they have this whole section on tipping $25 a day.
Are there any other panda reserves that don't charge so much? |

Well they are quite rare I suppose.
I've never seen the big deal about pandas. They don't do much, they are rubbish at sex and when they do manage to breed they seem to always end up sitting and squishing their babies. If ever an animal was asking for extinction the Panda is it!
(goes and waits for all the bricks from the animal lovers!) |

LOL Guapagirl, you really are a funny one. You cracked me up. Actually my good friend just ADORES pandas....everything pandas. I think they're cute and all but am not made of money. I cannot afford to throw away $150 or so to just play with pandas for 5 minutes. I'd rather use that money on these expensive skincare products so that I can look better more than 5 minutes.
Pandas are funny in face that they have a low sex drive, and they only have 4 days in a year to breed. Geez...how come human get so lucky and we can breed more than 4 days a year? It'd be better if we can skip a few months of breeding and don't have to deal with periods. |

You could just get your friend a big stuffed toy one and she probably couldn't tell the difference.
Just think of all the lovely stuff you could buy with £150! |

She got tons of stuffed pandas at home. She'll probably be glad to pay $150 to play with pandas.
Oh I'm already dreaming about all the lovely things I can buy with $150. hehe |

First: Watch the brick sail over the ocean, and land squarely on Guapas' head.
Second: Pandas are not toys and should not be played with.

we tried to fit in the Wolong reserve during our trip, but did not have enough time.
My understanding is that it is so expensive because they are basically a research center aiming to maintain a panda population in the wild and the "tourist" part was started to help fund it. On tours into the mountains you can also accompany them on their tracking missions (or at least you used to be able to). By the look of it, that is a private company making tours to the reserve. You can do-it-yourself too. Just look up a Lonely Planet or Fodors.
There are about 16 panda reserves in China and most are in the Sichuan area. Maybe the best place to go is the Panda Breeding Research Base which is located in Chengdu city. They hae a dozen or so pandas in captivity, but they try to resemble the natural environment as much as possible. Not sure about playing with them there.. or the photo thing...
Also, if you are serious, try contacting a website calledwww.chinaonyourmind.com and ask them to put together a tour for you. We used them for our trip and they were great.

Considering there's only about 1600 left in the Wild, I would happily pay 10x that amount to get to hold a panda. For something that rare and which might not be around in 10 years time I would willingly forfeit a pot of face cream. |

Thanks, Tiger Tim. I will forward your message to my boyfriend and my friend (the one crazy about pandas).
I had a chance to pet a baby tiger in Thailand and took pictures with it. It was awesome. They only charged $3 or so for the photo session, and they let you take your own pics along with their taking pics for you.
Then last night I stumbled across a Tiger Temple in Thailand. They allow people to go and play with grown bengal tigers and take pics. I was so amazed I sent the link to my bf who loves big cats. www.tigertemple.org We're going to visit this Tiger Temple next time we go to Thailand. |

That's where I went and it's just fine; you can get pretty close up to the pandas and it's very natural looking. I didn't get the soppy panda love thing either, but they're such comical creatures in the flesh. I never saw such a large animal hanging asleep in a tree before either. I might post a piccie.
I did have the the whole place to myself though because of SARS. It might be a little different if it's full of screaming tourists. |

I'll say in China there are many erm non-legit tour organisations which will charge outrageous prices for tourists. Try to find a reputable travel agency in your country? Due to business dealings, they usually would charge a flat normal rate for such tourist spots... |

Molly, please please post pics!!
Yogi - glad you reminded me pandas aren't toys and shouldn't be played with. I will tell my friend and boyfriend this so that they'll give up their idea, and we can just go play with tigers at the Tiger Temple in Thailand instead. hehe
Samantha, do you know of any other panda reserves in China? |

OMG, Molly, thank you for posting this pic. This is a very hilarious pic. Is there anyway I could get an actual copy of it via email? I need to send it to my friend who is crazy about Pandas.
ETA: Never mind. I found I could just save this pic to my desktop. Hope you don't mind. I'm going to send it to my girl friend. |

I absolutely adore Pandas! I would definitely love to play with a cub and would happily pay to do so. I am following the baby panda cub Mei Lan that was born about 4 months ago at the Atlanta zoo. They have a web cam that you can watch. She is just the cutest thing. I also keep up with Tai Shan, the latest cub at the National Zoo in DC. They too have a web cam. He is 18 or 19 months old. |

Not sure if they allow tourists to play/interact with pandas though... |

Hi Samantha,
I opened up the link and it took me to Wolong which is the reserve my bf found that charges $150 for a 3-5 minute play with pandas. I am not that crazy about pandas although I think they're really cute. I am not inclined (or even have that kind of money) to pay that price to get to play with the pandas for 3-5 mins. If it's more reasonable, I could bite the bullet, but I can't justify paying that fee with the way my budget is going.
Thank you.

I am so sorry, but it's more than 10 years ago...I could only remember I went to SiChuan and played with pandas, but really no idea where I actually went. I think I should go homt and check some Pics of that time.
But I think even if I could find out the place it may changed in the 10 years.
You'd better to collect some tourism information of SiChuan, there should be many parks or reserves for pandas |
