I just got my bottle of Spectro Jel in the mail (the fragrance free purple bottle) and when I opened it up got a good whiff of an alcohol/chemically smell.

Is this the way it's supposed to be?

Yup, this is the way it smells. Ditto for the Shoppers Drugmart Life Brand DermaJel. They both work really well though.

I was also surprised when I first tried spectro gel (thanks skincare!!) I thought it had a very strong chemical smell.

Despite that, I really like it!

Yep ! really bad smell. I stop using it for that. It felt like I was rubbing alcohol on my face. You should try Cetaphil next time. It is similar, without the smell.

Cetaphil is good for those whom have normal-dry/dry, sensitive skin. However, not so great for those whom combat acne.

IMO: SpectroGel & Life Brand's DermaJel are the way to go for combo, oily or acneic skintypes.

I used to use spectro a long time ago and found it worked really well at cleansing my acne prone skin. Cetaphil didn't seem to clean my skin enough and I missed the foaming action. I use Obagi foaming cleanser now and love it, but if I sweitched I would choose Spectro.

I used SpectroJel for years, and found that it did have that slight chemical smell, but I preferred that over washing my face with perfumes and such. my only complaint was that it wasn't great at removing makeup (I use Neutrogena Pore-Refining Cleanser...it doesn't really do anything for my pores, but it takes off all makeup! Occasionally I use the Burt's Bee's Orange Cleanser as well, but I kind of don't like how it mikes with my makeup and smears it all over)

I used to love using SpectroJel too. I stopped using it once I started wearing makeup. It does a lousy job at removing makeup.

I agree: lousy for make-up removal.

Your welcome. I know some celebrities love this brand and pick it up when they are in Canada. Personally, I find that it made my skin feel dry and I did not like it. I find Cetaphil to be a lot more gentle, including the gel formula for combination/oily skin.
