Hi,

My hair hasn't been relaxed in ages. I've been in twists and braids for months and don't want to go back to relaxers if I can avoid them.

How should I take care of my hair? Specifically, how can I slick it back when I want a ponytail without fuzzies and flyaways? How do I roller set it? Which setting lotion works well on natural hair? I can use the curling iron, but that is so bad for my hair.

My hair is ULTRA thick and coarse. Paul Mitchell Foaming Pomade did nothing for me. And since I take karate, I sweat a lot.

I can go back to twists, but I'd like to color my hair soon.

Thanks!

hmm, I am not a woman of color, but I know there are a lot of forums out there specifically discussions about making the transition from relaxed to natural style, that really helped my friend -- I will ask her for some names. I do know that she makes a modified DIY version of my leave in treatment, which has coconut oil, jojoba, wheat germ oil, and panthenol in it, and prefers that to the commericial setting lotions which are usually cheaper oils anyways.

I am not a woman of color, so I can't offer a lot of help from any of my own experiences.
You may want to check out the Oragnic Beauty Expert blog. She has discussed and reviewed many hair products for women of color. Here's the link.

Hopefully you'll be able to find some info to help there. Smile

I'm a woman of color but from your description I suspect that I've got somewhat different hair texture that you. I'd recommend trying the forums on naturallycurly dot com They have a classification of curly hair types so you can go to the section specifically addressing your hair type.

For what it's worth, I've got type 3b curly hair and Bumble and Bumble Super Rich is my HG conditioner. I like KMS Flatout Straightening Creme for keeping everything slicked back and in place up-dos. I looooove the KMS Curlup Curl Balm and Control Creme for getting well defined curls for wearing my hair down.

A side note on the hair texture differences, my mom is white and my dad is black and my sisters and I all have very different hair. I'm a 3b, one of my sisters is a 4b (and gets that thermal retexturing thing done) and my baby sister is a 2b (she has to twist it up w/ lots of product when it's wet to get good curls)

I am a woman of color, but I can't really advise because I have relaxed my hair for years. However, try the forum.blackhairmedia.com website; I have seen a lot of recommendations for all hair issues there.

Hi, Thanks all!

I went to all the sites mentioned and one of them rec'd Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding. I bought some yesterday and tried it on a small section of hair as a tester. It seemed to work and I'm about to go wash my hair and use the Curly Pudding on my whole head.

I'll post a follow up later!

Best
