Wow, I just gave Coconut a bath using the Veterinary Formula's Snow White Shampoo I bought from Petco.com. It smells so good. I can't stop smelling her. Her coat is so white, too. NOTE: It helps to tone down the tear stain a bit, but she made more tears right after I dried her up. Seeing is believing, so here are her pics after her bath:
Also note: I tried the 8-in-1 brand White Pearl shampoo before in Coconut scent (haha). I hated the smell, and it didn't make her coat this white. It was nothing special so I returned it and got this one. |

Thank you! She looks so much like a stuffed animal b/c she's so little.
I forgot to mention this shampoo is not just for white dogs; it's also for white cats and horses, too. Also the animals don't have to be all white, but if they got any white parts, those parts will get white. The bottle label says the more you use, the whiter the coat gets.
PS: Coconut's ears are beige color, so the shampoo couldn't get them white. ![Very Happy](images/smiles/biggrin.gif) |

Forgot to add this shampoo made her fur so soft, too. I wish I could use it on my own hair, but I won't cuz it got SLS in it. LOL |

C, she is so cute ... she almost doesn't look real! She looks like a little puppy doll!
Our vet used to use a purplish colored shampoo on our Samoyeds and you could hardly look at them in the sunlight they were so white and fluffy. I miss Kahlua, Babygirl and my little Buttercup! ![Crying or Very sad](images/smiles/cry.gif) |

She looks great. Having a maltese myself I'm very aware of the tear stains. Just a tip, stay away from the treats that are flavored with artifical colors as they tend to stain. I'm not sure what your water supply is like, but for us we always used distilled water to help keep tear staining to a minimum which has helped immensely.

FWIW, Brody is now 7.5 years old and is extremely healthy. He's just now beginning to get a few dental problems which we are rectifying. |

MG - The Snow White Shampoo is also purple. I wonder if it's the same one your vet was using. After all the brand is called Veterinary's Formula. She does look kinda unreal. If my son is holding her, b/c he's 7, people think he's walking around with a stuffed toy.
Steph, thank you for the info. I didn't know about the food coloring, so I was giving some jerky treats I bought from TJs. After I read about how food color can cause the tear stain, I checked the label and sure enough there's caramel color added to the treats. So I had to return it. Luckily they didn't give me any fuss about it. I will try and see if I give her some distilled water, will she drink it? She refused water when I added white vinegar to it. |

My maltese was just groomed today and come to think of it they have always used the shampoo that's purple too. Maybe it's all the same shampoo.
Ironically, about the dog treats I have always used "greenies" which I thought were good for Brody's teeth. Since Brody is 7.5 and has a few new dental issues the vet just recommended that I start using beef flavored rawhide treats. Honestly, even with the vets recommendation I'm not using the beef flavored simply because I know it will stain him terribly. Fortunately, Brody will chew the unflavored rawhide treats with as much vigor. The vets explanation was that the rawhide helps to clean the tarter better than Brody's "greenies" did.
Enjoy the look of your maltese. Simply put, "It's great!" Brody is turning into an older boy now and still looks like a puppy. Of course, don't let their look fool you. Brody was just groomed today and his groomer was laughing about the fact of how spoiled he is. She said he is learning to whimper anytime he has to move. Essentially, Brody has learned how to manipulate thei groomers Very smart dogs! You're in for a wonderful life with yours.

Oh Steph, it's totally cool you love Brody. That's how it should be. These dogs are our friends and part of the family.
What do you do with Brody when you go to work? |

I think she will drink distilled water. Vinegars smell yucky, even I can't stand it!! And dogs have better noses than we do! |

Hmm...I'll have to try shaving her ears.
I just put powder in her ears if they start to smell. I try to be careful during baths, so her ears won't get wet inside.
How does everyone wash your dog's face and rinse it out after? I hold her head down and put it under the water. She hates it. That's how I shower, so I thought it makes sense to do this, so water won't get in her nose. |

I just use a cup and pour the water over my dogs head to rinse the head and face off. My dogs are big and would never let me do that to them. They make special ear cleansers to clean the ears. It helps to prevent fungal infections and such to keep them clean. I don't know if the powder would do the same thing. |

WoM, the ear powder I used was made specifically for dog ears, and it's supposed to get rid of that nasty smell and make removing the ear wax easier. I have not tried to remove her ear wax. However her ears aren't smelling funny any more. |

My maltese grew up to be 5 lbs, at age 1. He's very small. I got him from a breeder in Missouri. |

I plucked my dog's ear hairs with a tweezer. He never screamed at all. |

Hi Cherisse,
Your dog is sooo cute!
But i am wondering if the shampoo has SLS or any harsh surfactants? I always worry about the for my dog and myself actually now.

Gosh I love this thread!!! I love looking at Coconut! She is sooo cute!! I would stay away from SLS, too.. cause maltese's hair gets really tangly easily. SLS dries out hair, no? |

That's the only drawback of a white coat. I remember spending time on my poodle who would tear up quite a bit. |
