Hi all!
I am absolutely addicted to my St Ives products- so much that I felt "a bit devastated" when I looked more closely at the ingredients list on my Moisturizer that I was slathering on my legs tonight. Parabens and petrolatum galore! I don't exactly know what parabens are, but I see some people around here talking about them like they're really bad so I figure I should stay away from them! And I do not feel comfortable using anything with petrolatum in it, as I find that it adds to dryness rather than easing it (especially in lip balm...)
So. I'd like to get started on another kind of moisturizer, preferably organic or a bit "cleaner" than the St Ives moisturizer (goodbye, dear friend ). The problem is, I'm not willing to go crazy in paying for these kinds or products (11 bucks is pretty much my limit). I'm also limited in inventory because I don't live close to any really good stores (I dislike buying from natural food stores as they are a few dollars more than getting them at the gorcery store).
Kiss My Face, Avalon Organics and Jason are the top three brands I have access to. There are more, but I haven't caught the names of any (but I will be looking from now on). My skin can get a bit drying in colder, dryer weather (aka winter) but unlike my face (which is VERY VERY SENSITIVE) it can tolerate almost any kind of product. So, I would describe the skin on my body as dry. I need something to keep me replenished, preferably something that does not break my bank account I was wondering if anyone with experience with the above three brands could give me any recommendations of certain types of moisturizers offered by them, or which is perhaps more appealling than the other two. I don't like shelling out that sort of money just to try a product that I may not like. This is for life, ladies and gentlemen! I need something I can rely on!! |

My only recommendation is the Dr Hauschka Rose Day Cream, as my skin is very dry & sensitive at the moment & that's the only product/brand that is actually working for me. However I don't use it everyday, as the shea butter will give me horrible breakouts. |

Although they have some good natural and organic ingredients, all of the 3 lines you mentioned contain parabens and other synthetic preservatives in their products which is why they are on the cheaper end of the organic scale. If you have to go with one of the 3 I'd choose Avalon Organics as they seem to have the best ingredients out of the 3. You may also want to look at the Druide line. It's a great Canadian skin care line that is completely organic and natural, and reasonably priced. I use their shampoos and their bodywashes but haven't had much success with the conditioners as they really irritate my sensitive scalp for some reason. Aubrey Organics is another great organic skin care line that uses really good ingredients. I've used a few products from this line too and really liked them. Weleda is fantastic, a bit more expensive than the others I've mentioned but still in the mid range I'd say. I use their excellent Everon lip balm and their great toothpastes but they make a whole bunch of other goodies. Give those lines a look. Hopefully you'll find something you like. |

You could make your own cheaply by ordering some shea or other butter plus essential oils, etc. I'm sure there are great recipes in the DIY thread.
Or maybe order some of Candy's Body Butters if you don't want to clart about mixing things yourself.
wildflower mentions Weleda and I must say that I've been impressed with their products too. They make gorgeously scented body oils. |

I third the Weleda recommendation. In terms of affordability and performance, Weleda products are some of the best I've used. For body moisturizer I use their body oils. For hands I've grown to love their Skin Food, which incidentally can be used anywhere--face, hands, body. I've used it on my face in a pinch and, although I have rather sensitive skin, I'd no problems whatsover with it.
One final thing that I'd mention is that I noticed when I switched from chemical-based formulations to all-natural/organic products I started using much, much less. I think it's a combination of the products going farther and my skin improving so much that I just needed a lot less. So, the start-up costs may seem prohibitive, but you may find that in the longterm you're spending in the same general range. |

Hi Freva! I think it's great you're making the switch--- your skin will thank you! Have you considered looking into Burt's Bees moisturizers at all? They are quite affordable and easy to obtain too. Baby Bee Buttermilk lotion is the lotion I reach for every day recently--- it's easily absorbed by the skin, and has a really addicting scent. DH and I also use KMF moisturizers, and we love all the ones we've tried. KMF Honey and Calendula lotion is AWESOME--- it smells like honey, and it leaves your skin feeling very silky. I also like KMF Peaches and Cream (lovely juicy scent), and KMF Filthy Rich Moisturizer.
As for Jason, the 70% Aloe lotion is quite nice--- I've gone through several bottles of it. It's not greasy at all and has a nice light scent. If you can find it, I also recommend Desert Essence Organics Vanilla Chai Hand and Body Lotion. It's under $10, and the smell is SO delicous you'll forget it's an organic lotion. And of course, I definitely recommend Candessence's Encore Body Lotion in Chocolate. The smell is addicting, and she uses a lot of nourishing ingredients. HTH--- please keep us updated! |
