Can Retinyl Palmitate Be As Effective As Retin-A?

HiI have been advised by a skin care line that if enough Retinyl Palmitate is topically applied to the skin it is as effective as Retin-A but without the side effects.

Does anyone know this to be true? Surely if this was accurate all the High Street brands would be adding more Retinyl Palmitate to their anti-ageing lines.

It would be great to have your advice or comments on this topic.

Many thanks.

Best wishes
Tracy

I'd say there's very little evidence for Retinyl Palmitate working in that way at all.

You'd be hard pressed to find a user who was satisfied with it's wrinkle curing properties.

Can you tell me please what are the benefits to the skin using Retinyl Palmitate?

I think the benefits of RP are that consumers have heard how retin-a is good for the skin and anti-aging and think that RP is pretty much the same thing. I seem to remember reading somewhere that RP has to be present in huge proportions to be even halfway effective.

In the tiny quantities it's used in those OTC products it does more to promote your own oil production than anything - so good for dry skin.

So they say over at Skinbio and that's my experience of products with it in too.

Read my post on 'Retinol Sucks'

Nothing is as effective as retin A.
Side effects....there are none. a bit of peeling means tone it back to using one night less. No big deal.

A lot of us are satisfied with Retinaldehyde products so I wouldn't say Retin A is the ONLY one. As a former Retin A user I can say it works and without as much irritation.

I dont know what Retinaldehyde is. If it's the same as retinol, it's weak. Maybe different, I dont know.
And I dont know what 'side effects' mean in relation to Retin A. Peeling?? Well, just use less. Anything good and powerful overused, will cause some irritation, but it's just a sign that too much is being used. I doubt anything is as good as Retin A. I will never stray from Retin A again. Lesson learnt!

Another benefit I saw was that it plumped my skin. My face looked fuller.

Here's a couple of threads Tracy

BTW you still need to be careful when using this. It's not so gentle as it doesn't work so you must wear sunscreen daily and you might experience a little sensitivity to other actives.

There's good info on retinaldehyde at MUA too. I just cant remember the user's name who has a notepad on this. If you go to the boards and ask, someone will point you in the right direction. Retinaldehyde is stronger than retinol.Avene have it in their products.
It has improved my skin, but not fine lines. It can make you sensitive, I had to cut back to 3 nights a week.

It's a shame it didn't work for your fine lines Carol - it did improve mine though.
