Hi, I am currently working on 3 separate hair conditioner formulations for my sisters. And yes, each of them have dry, normal, and oily hair conditions!

So from the DIY gurus of EDS (I salute you all!), can you advise on what carrier/essential oils OR BLEND thereof, I should consider adding in a conditioner for:

1. normal hair
2. dry hair
3. oily hair

Thank you so much.

For a nice conditioning shampoo/conditioner I like to incorporate the more fatty oils with other base oils. For example I'd make a blend with oils such as, avocado, virgin coco creme or fractionated coconut oil, peanut oil, sesame oil, apricot kernel, almond oil and jojoba. You may also want to add some cocoa and shea butters as well for extra richness. For a lighter shampoo I would use jojoba, almond, camellia and maybe a hazelnut or macadamia nut oil. Neem oil is a great addition to both as it is very therapeutic for the scalp and hair.

As for essential oils there are lots of different ones you can use. Oils like tea tree, lavender, sandalwood, cedarwood, rosemary verbenone, and roman chamomile are popular but you can also use some nice citrus oils and more herby ones like sage, clary sage and marjoram as well.

I just wanted to add that I recently added neem powder into my shampoo (which already has liquid oat beta glucans, sunflower seed oil, seamollient and jim's liquid kelp in it) and my scalp LOVES it. my shampoo is a swampy green clay color though Laughing .

Yup, Neem isn't the most pleasant looking or smelling thing but it is great and really makes your hair and scalp look and feel wonderful. It's worth it.

Hi skincareaddicted & wildflower,

I have some neem powder ... but I've completely forgotten what I purchased it for! Laughing Perhaps a face mask? Confused Laughing

Why is neem good for hair/scalp?

Thanks

Mary

Neem seems to have broken out of the Ayurvedic niche and is thankfully becoming more recognized to all. Neem is used for an abundance of things (makes a great organic and natural pesticide too!) and has many medicinal properties. Here's a link to wikipedia which will give you a bit of info on Neem. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neem If you do a web search you will find out so much more as it very widely known. Lots of interesting stuff out there to read about.

I bought a neem bar for my hair a long time ago. It was 20%. Made my hair fall out big time. So, I think you might want to be carefull how much you use.

Hi Mary!

I use it for oil control on my scalp and to help with dandruff and itchiness. I know it is also used in masks too.

zumyla--do you think it could also be another ingredient in the soap that made you allergic?

It is possible. I don't have an ingr. list, and I think it has been discontinued, because I bought it from Earthfare (which is like a southern wholefoods) blowout sale. It came enclosed fully in a recycled box, but when I do a search the few that come up were not it. I'm sure I made sure it was all natural, but that doesn't mean much. I can tell you that I'm not really sensitive to much. And, it wasn't falling out in patches or anything (although who could tell with this mane.)

Thanks so much for this, wildflower. I am now off to blend oils and make sisterly hair conditioners!

Two awesome oils for hair are mink and rose hip oil. Especially for dry hair, I get amazing results. Good luck on your formulations!

I've read on other threads about acv. I know it's great for shiny hair. Is is also good for itchy scalp? If so, do I just add a little to my shampoo? Thanks in advance.

I purchased some neem oil (cold pressed from neem tree nuts) from Mountain Rose Herbs over a year ago b/c I had read about the benefits and the only thing I can use it for is an outdoor plant pesticide-- the smell is just too intensely gross for me to stand. (the "sick" emoticon is not working otherwise it would be posted here.) Perhaps it's not too bad to others but to me, it's disgusting. Maybe in other forms, such as powder or extract, or when extracted from the leaf instead of the nut it's not as bad. For those of you that use it, do neem oils/powders/etc smell bad to you?
