does anybody have moles on their body in weird places or ones they absolutely hate. I dont have any moles except for a couple small ones down below :S yes its weird talking about this, but i havent always had them... they seemed to just pop up recently... same with one on my butt. I want to get them removed... but they arent big but pretty small. Has anybody had moles removed before?

BCgirl, I've had over 9 moles removed and we are still counting. In June 2000 I had a rather strange looking and large sized mole removed from my right ankle and it turned out to be Melanoma skin cancer. Never take moles lightly! Never ignor them if they seem to grow out of nowhere, be several different colors, larger than a quarter of an inch or bleed/itch. These can be skin cancer signs.

Removing moles is generally not a problem. The small ones I had removed was easy. A small local anesthetic shot and the doctor trimmed them away with tiny scissors which didn't hurt and left no scar. I had 3 bigger ones that turned out to have dysplastic cells in them which could turn to cancer. For those, I had to do an outpatient surgery at a local hospital where they trimmed away a lot more skin around the mole to be sure it was all gone.

Best advice, see a skin care specialist or a skin cancer specialist. Let him make the decision if the mole should stay or be removed. Removal is easy...

Skin cancer can kill...

Now there is an easy choice!!

I have had 6 moles removed. It's not fun and I'm sure my doctor is going to remove some more this year. (Too many years in the Miami sun.) A couple of them had the potenial to turn cancerous in a couple of years, so if you have to get some removed, then I would highly recommend it. The stitches were a nuisance more than anthing but that's the price to pay for being healthy. Good Luck!!

I know what you mean about too many years in the sun racecargirl. The Arizona sun nearly killed me, and I'm not kidding. Being a bodybuilder, you have to be as tan as possible so I would lay out for hours at a time, and then use tanning beds at night. I nearly paid the price for that!! The mole removal is slightly irritating, that is true, but I look at it like this, it is a small pain to take when the other "option" is being dead! I do dread going to the skin doc every six months though because it's almost a sure thing that he'll want to cut something off of me... Crying or Very sad

I know what you mean. Growing up in Miami, if you had a tan (almost a burn) then you were popular in high school. Now that I'm in Colorado with the thin mountain air, I am so sensitive to the sun, that I wear sunscreen all the time. I'm going to "date" myself now, but in the 70s, before the invent of sunscreen, it was popular to lay out with baby oil and iodine. Shock

I'll "date" myself too, but when my parents would take my brother and I to the Florida vacation we took every year starting in the 60s...we didn't use anything!! Coming home after an entire day at the beach we all looked like lobsters, and spread gobs of Noxema on our baked bodies which didn't do anything except make you feel painful and gooey!

They say that Melanoma starts if you get burns as a child. Well, I fit that criteria for sure.

Keep using the sunscreen. The science is strong and proven.

I spent a few years with an ugly mole on my neck. I went to the doctors because it changed shape. They removed it painlessly in about 1 minute & I wish I had had done years before. It is always best to get moles checked out. I'm another one because of my colouring I used to get sunburnt & then peel as a youngster. We lived in Australia for two years.
Thank goodness most of todays generation are far more aware of the risks and sunscreens are much better.

John, I am glad your moles have been removed safely & you are having regular checks. I know it isn't ideal but at least if they find problems quickly they can usually be dealt with before it is to late.

A few years ago I had what I thought was an ugly mole removed from the back of my waistline and my derm told me it was an actinic keratosis. Removing it wasn't a big deal as he just injected a local anesthetic, sliced it off with a scapel and than cauterized it with an electric needle. (It left a slightly raised pinkish white scar so I wouldn't recommend letting a doctor take one off this way anywhere on your body that you really care about having a little scar.)

From what I've read on the internet, these are caused by sun damage and can be pre cancerous.

But if I'm correct at understanding where your moles are, it doesn't sound likely that they could be caused by sun damage ... ! Wink

BCgirl, please get to a dermatologist to do a biopsy on these new moles, they could be cancerous! Last October, I went to my eye doctor to remove a small growth from my left eyelid. I assumed it was benign but irritating - it turned out to be skin cancer - at least it wasn't melanoma, but since then I've been a freak about sunblock!

I'm paying for all the years of sun worship in my misspent youth...

i live in canada, and im hardly ever out in the sun. I dont have a history of skin cancer, and the places i have these moles never see the sun :S
but i should get them checked out anyways

I agree, you should see a specialist. Just check them out as a preventive measure.

A lot of great reponses to this post. Two things I would add, first about the moles, it is true that moles could be cancerous. Check out blacksalveinfo com and find out how to "detect skin cancer" and also get rid of moles. Regarding the sunscreens, while too much sun exposure will increase your chances of melanoma if you get burned, not enough sunlight also leads to cancer according to recent studies. The sunscreens also have chemicals in them that can lead to cancer! So what is a girl to do? (or guy) You can check this research about sunlight, toxic sunscreens, and cancers by doing a search at mercola com. Lastly, even though there are now quite a few sunscreens on the market that claim to be "natural" they still have titanium dioxide, which is neither natural or safe. There is only one so far that I have found that really is natural, and you can look it up under "all natural sunscreen" at bionutz com. By the way, you should always get the moles checked out, even if they are in "sun protected" areas Wink

hi, i got a raised mole on my face, about 2cm width. Am thinking to get it removed but was told by the GP that it will definitely left a scar. I just wanna ask if I go to a cosmetic surgeon, will they still be a possibility of a scar after it is removed? TIA...

Yes, you might still get a scar, but no way would I let a GP cut my face. Got to a PS, or derm-surgeon. Odds are much better that way. And a scar may be better than what you have. Or not. Your call.
